Japanese publisher Square Enix has confirmed that among the projects it is developing for next-generation consoles are a new Final Fantasy game from the team behind Final Fantasy X, and a new massively multiplayer game from the FFXI team.

Speaking in separate interviews in Japanese magaines, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka and Final Fantasy X director Yoshinori Kitase both confirmed that they're working on projects for next-generation platforms. Kitase, who's currently overseeing the development of PS2 action title Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, declined to give any further detail about the PS3 Final Fantasy title mentioned by Square Enix president Yoichi Wada in Los Angeles last month, but did hint at which staff might be involved.

Oh great -- the team behind FFX, one of my least favorite FFs. With Kitase in charge of story and directing, FFs won't be as great as they were when Sakaguchi was in charge. Kitase's stuff seems more flashy and appealing, but much less deep and timeless, like Sakaguchi's stuff. I can always go back and play greats like FF4, FF6, FF7, and FF8, but I've only gone back to play FFX once.

Wowww, somebody praising FF8 right next to FF6? That's rare. I like you. You know, as more than a friend.

I try not to complain too much about FFs anymore. The best approach is to treat each new game like an individual. In the end, Square-Enix is just exploiting the FF name, and as annoying as it can be, I can't hold that against the real-people employees putting out the creative energy. Might as well see what they have to offer.

On the other hand, my eyes almost rolled out of my head at the news of a new MMORPG from the exact same team. I have very little faith in S-E's ability to produce online games. FFXI was shallow and limiting, and had possibly the worst pricing structure in the history of MMORPGs. Any game that costs that much monthly should NOT have such a high shelf price on top of it, and should offer a whole lot more gaming freedom to boot.

And for some reason, I get the feeling any new venture won't be the least bit more affordable.

God I hope Guild Wars proves successful.

Yeah, I've heard that about FFXI. However, for me, if I have to pay for a game, and then keep paying for it (monthly), you can count me out of it (unless it was only a dollar or two a month, and maybe not even then).

SE needs money to maintaint servers in great shape and need us to do that, monthly payment is not an issue at all. if you are willing to buy the game, expect to pay monthly.
