- Might as well buy the older versions unless you just want better graphics. You'll save money. (JUST MY ADVICE!)
-
#1.1 Posted by lexor on 21 Jun 2005 - 20:47
- prices on games don't drop here, HL1 (yes 1) is still over $60 and Diablo2 is $50
so might as well get the newer game than the old for same money. (dunno what BFV and BF:1942 costs right now but I'm sure they didn't drop, just like everything else) -
#1.2 Posted by Lexcyn on 21 Jun 2005 - 22:19
- BF: Vientam is $19 and BF: 1942 is $24 ... at Futureshop anyways.
-
#1.3 Posted by FiREFLi on 21 Jun 2005 - 23:32
- Where can you get HL1 for $60? Please don't buy it there.
Ebay: HL1, sealed, unused, $10 -
#1.4 Posted by nigel.pinder on 22 Jun 2005 - 04:58
- the fact that the older versions dont have squads, commander, built in voip etc obviously escaped your notice.....
-
#1.5 Posted by Flatty on 22 Jun 2005 - 10:15
- > unless you just want better graphics
and Commander
and Squads
and Voice over IP
and a physic system
and new maps
and never-ending MOD possibilities

- Yeah, and while you're at it save your money on games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Quake 4, Prey, HL2 Lost Coast, Unreal 3, Call of Duty 2 and Gears of War - the shareware version of Doom 1 is still freely downloadable.

#2.1 Posted by Spookie on 21 Jun 2005 - 20:20
Far too true, it's certainly an inprovement over BFV! Being in the UK it's either Thursday or Friday. Thats if nothing goes wrong.-
#2.2 Posted by yert* on 21 Jun 2005 - 20:21
- Yeah, I guess. But it's not that big of a deal. Just download the Desert Combat mod.
-
#2.3 Posted by soothsayer on 21 Jun 2005 - 20:37

- To bad it still requires a PS 1.4 compliant video card. EA/Dice... kiss my ass.
-
#5.1 Posted by Arkle on 22 Jun 2005 - 00:18
- So, what? You think Dice should hold back on great games just so people like you can play it?
If you don't want to upgrade, you're going to have to face facts that you're not going to be catered for in future. -
#5.2 Posted by theyarecomingforyou on 22 Jun 2005 - 00:50
- It doesn't run on my mobile either, but that doesn't mean I hold EA/Dice responsible. PS1.4 is old enough, but anything older is just ancient.
-
#5.3 Posted by necrosis on 22 Jun 2005 - 21:42
- Im sorry but on a computer that can run DOOM III and HL2 with no problems not being able to run BF2 is just stupid. What do you get? Better graphics? BFD. I want a fun game.
PS 1.4 dosent speed up anything, it just makes the game look nicer.
But seriously. Why can't they support older PS cards like FarCry does yet still have the latest and greatest PS in the game for those that have 200$ to spend on better cards.

- The weapons and equipment loadouts are totally screwed in this game. Sniper rifles have been made so inaccurate they're pretty much useless, and grenades seem to have the firepower of firecrackers. The classes are also a bit too artificial, most of them are missing grenades entirely... but I guess considering grenades are so useless in this game, it doesn't matter? Right now it is easier to kill someone with a 9mm pistol than a grenade in this game.
BF2 reminds me more of Team Fortress and Command & Conquer than a "realistic" military game. They should have used a "shaky-cam" sniper system like the one in Call of Duty, or Operation Flashpoint, not one that randomly makes you miss without justification.
On the plus side, the command system and squad management is pretty cool, but overall this game seems like it went in the wrong direction, towards cartoonishness. -
#6.1 Posted by Spookie on 21 Jun 2005 - 22:14
- What are you firing?

I can kill 3 people if they are grouped together with a hand gren or a M203!
Their AoE is rather small (5 meters) but leathal (1-2m instant death 3-5m takes 3/4 of your health!). -
#6.2 Posted by whcodered on 21 Jun 2005 - 22:25
- I agree, there is something terribly wrong with the sniper, or is there a trick to it?
-
#6.3 Posted by IGx89 on 21 Jun 2005 - 23:07
- I've been sniping almost solely in the BF2 demo (a few times getting 1st place on 64-person servers
), and also agree: the sniper rifles are definitely weird :/. In almost every game I've played, firing a sniper rifle at the head of an enemy always kills them; in BF2, it kills them half the time it seems. Firing a M-24 while standing in America's Army hits more often than firing a M-24 while prone in BF2
. It's like they just strapped a scope on a M16A2 and painted it black
I am happy that BF2 usually loads maps faster than BF1942 on my machine, though; efficient coding always impresses me. Though I really wish they didn't verify client files every single time a map reloads; that takes up the majority of the loading time
. And I'm really sick of the "TK'ing enemy" bug, and no apparent votekicking support...

- The Hitboxes are pretty crappy with the M249 when you have the sights up. I was playing in single player and i was shooting an enemy dead on and the dude never died.

- ea/dice can eat my pancakes. I run Doom3 nice and smooth and the BF2 demo runs like Doom3 on a 386.
-
#13.1 Posted by Aeros on 22 Jun 2005 - 04:32
- Yeah and there are already better existing engines that make the textures look 10 times better.
-

- What other FPS engines handle large scale maps with 64 players and vehicles/aircraft?
-
#13.3 Posted by Jon on 22 Jun 2005 - 11:25
- Demo runs perfectly fine for me on my outdated 1.6gig, 1gig, 9800pro system. Doom 3 however, does not run fine on this system.
-
#13.4 Posted by AJCrowley Esq on 22 Jun 2005 - 11:32
- Runs great for me in 1600x1200 with everything (including AA) turned up to full. Doom 3 on the other hand, is best run at 1280x1024 on my system.

- I think Battlefield 2 is just like the transition from GTA3 to ViceCity. Looks more cartoonish, overloaded with features although some are good, general aspects of the game are completely different and bloated lowering its playability. No doubt its still a good game but I would have to say, Ill probly end up playing the old one more, just like I would play GTA3 ova Vice

- Don't listen to all the twats knocking this game. If you want a kick ass shooter that is on another level to most other games then buy BF2.
It is without a doubt THE best multiplayer shooter going at the moment.
Beware though - you need 1Gb Ram to run it and a kick ass Gfx card.

With their appetites already whetted by the recent release of the Battlefield 2 demo, PC gamers can now tuck into the real thing. Electronic Arts announced today that it has shipped the much-anticipated follow-up to developer Digital Illusions' Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam to stores across the US and Canada. It is rated T for Teen and retails for a suggested $49.99.
Unlike its two predecessors, which were set in historical wars, Battlefield 2 takes place in a hypothetical future conflict between the United States, China, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). Each side will be equipped with the latest military hardware, including more than 30 vehicles and state-of-the art weaponry, like jets, helicopters, and mechanized infantry.
