Team Ninja guru also further confirms Microsoft will make a major announcement in Japan later this month.

In an interview published in the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox Magazine, Tecmo producer and Team Ninja head honcho Tomonobu Itagaki talked more about his impressions on the Xbox 360. When asked about the console's triple-core IBM PowerPC processor design, Itagaki called it a "buffed-up Sega Saturn," as the old console was also multi-processor, coming with two, 32-bit CPUs. He said that a single-CPU machine is easier for programming, but multi-core structures have become the recent trend.

It's not clear whether Famitsu is simply basing an assumption on the inclusion of the drive on Kutaragi's previous comments, or if the magazine actually has new information about Sony's thinking on the matter.

If PS3 doesn't ship with a hard drive, it will give an edge to the Xbox 360, particularly in terms of massively multiplayer games - an increasingly popular genre which currently requires significant amounts of storage on the client side. Sony may be hoping, however, that the PS3's superior capabilities for removable storage, which includes slots for Memory Stick and other types of high-capacity memory cards, will allow MMOGs to be played on the console even without a drive.

It's also possible that Sony may adopt the approach which many commentators expected Microsoft to follow with the Xbox 360, by launching two versions of the PS3 - one without a hard drive and with limited media capabilities, and a more expensive model with a hard drive and full media functionality.

The Saturn was actually very successful in Japan so I'd think that it's a compliment coming from a Japanese developer.

Wonder why the fanboys are not whining on this article ..

The guys always had a slightly unfortunate way with words - I imagine he meant it as a compliment - though I gotta say it doesn't carry well outside of Japan...

To me it does! I live in the USA and had a Saturn which I loved dearly. Itagaki got a lot of his influence from Virtua Fighter 2--one of the best games on the Saturn.

Buffed up Saturn? Thank you god.

It is not a dis, He is just pointing out that Sega was the 1st console to have multi CPU's in it and paying homage to it. Tecmo redid DOA1 for the Saturn from scratch basically and it was one of the best looks games at that time. In other words He liked the Saturn allot.

Well Dis or not, multi core is the future. Team Ninja isn't going to be able to escape it, seeing as all the next Gen consoles are multicore by design.

BTW: The Sega Saturn kicked ass if you imported your games from Japan. Sega did a lousy job here in the USA.

Remember the sega saturn was a very hard system to develop for thats one of the reasons it failed in the end.
#6.1 DigitalDude on 02 Jul 2005 - 02:30
and i thought that ps3 was the one everyone was saying was gonna be harder to develop for....
#6.2 slik da relic on 02 Jul 2005 - 02:48
what people must understand is that regardless what the developers say, if the machine sells well and reaches that "critical mass" that they always talk about, they're gonna hafta make games on it. if all 3 machines r difficult to program on, then they'll start on the machine thats the easiest, or even the one with the most sold units. saturn could run everything ps could, but it started as a 2D machine, then sega put it out b4 the due date in america, and had the price at $400. they screwed up. it was their own fault.

From the article:
QUOTE
"The Xbox 360 is said to be a machine that's easy to develop for, but that's because it has a good lineup of middleware and infrastructure. So it should be easy to create something that's up to a certain level of quality.

He is compaing it to a Sega Saturn because it was also MULTI-Cored. Its not a dis.
#8 OutlawTorn on 02 Jul 2005 - 13:47
He also said this in the article:
"The Xbox 360 has enough power without all the cores going into use. Even if just a single core is used for a game, it will still be several more times powerful than machines up until now. But we aren't satisfied at that kind of a level. Our programmers are having fun playing around with the machine. They're swinging around all the cores and making a game that shows the powers of the Xbox 360."
Doesn't sound like he's really "dissing" the system.
