Miami attorney Jack Thompson claims cheat codes make EA's life sim a pedophile's paradise by showing genitalia; calls for ban on T-rated game.

How do you like your hot coffee? If you're Jack Thompson, you like it scalding game publisher's laps. The Miami attorney and antigaming activist has done his share to see that games don't fall into the wrong hands. And lately, those hands have belonged to almost everyone.

Thompson was among those who spearheaded the recent effort to slap an "Adults Only" rating on Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and he's often been on the forefront of many other gaming issues, several of which have targeted the crime-spree-based GTA franchise. In the past, he's represented defendants who have been the victims of GTA-inspired crimes, including the triple homicide of three police officers by an 18-year-old boy in Alabama.

ESRB president Patricia Vance states the situation rather differently, saying that: "After a thorough investigation, we have concluded that sexually explicit material exists in a fully rendered, unmodified form on the final discs of all three platform versions of the game."

She did note, however, that "the material was programmed by Rockstar to be inaccessible to the player and they have stated that it was never intended to be made accessible."

The "Hot Coffee" mod saw players taking their girlfriend home and then having sex with her in a mini-game that, while present on the game DVD, only came to light after a PC modification unlocked the code. The data was subsequently found to be resident on the PS2 and Xbox discs and could be unlocked on PS2 using Datel's Action Replay cheat-finder product.

The ESRB and another industry body, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), have come under increasing pressure to act since Hot Coffee came to light, with widespread coverage in the American media and proponents of a ban receiving support from the likes of senator Hillary Clinton, Californian assemblyman Leland Yee, and anti-videogame activist Jack Thompson, who recently compared ESA president Doug Lowenstein to Adolf Hitler over his role in the affair.

Indeed, just last week the BBFC said that while it didn't know about Hot Coffee at the time of rating the game, it wasn't going to update it. "Even if we had been aware of it, we would not have had a problem," a spokesperson told this website. "From our point of view the hidden material does not contravene the 18 rating and so the rating stands."

In Australia however the game could well be banned altogether, with Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) - a notoriously strict organisation - having previously refused to classify titles including Manhunt and NARC, effectively banning them from sale. There the OFLC had said: "The Classification Board is compelled to revoke a game's classification if it is found to contain undisclosed contentious material, whether activated through use of a code or otherwise."

Sadly this is what America is becoming. Any game that involves blowing people to bits or beating the crap out of people often gets a T rating, but as soon as that clothing goes off, OH NO!! ITS INAPPROPRIATE!!!

It's sad that for so long love has been supressed more than hate.

The point is that violence is perfectly acceptable but bring out a nipple ( even Janet Jackson with her "wardrobe malfunction" ) and it is the apocalypse. It is hypocritical and amounts to censorship.

Becuase there's nothing wrong with making mod's to change the game and he can't do anything if that's the case.

Good god... Rockstar really has started a trivial war between game makers and idiotic censors. The Sims 2... and porn? I mean, first of all, ANY moddable game can have nudity if the mod makers create that kind of content. Why don't we place a ban on all video games for people under 18 or 20 or whatever they feel is "adult" enough. Adultism is mistaken for maturity all the time.

Come on America (and by this i mean that do the censoring) are such morons.

I was watching a US TV on plastic surgery, they would show all the gory, bloody surgery, but then had to blur out all the nipples from the people getting implants.

But then again, the most stupid censoring issue was on my own countries (Australia) SBS show, John Safron VS God. He reviewed and commented (and payed out on, it was a comedy) on many differrent religions. When he got to VooDoo, the show WAS allowed to show the voodoo priest BITING the testicles off a LIVE goat, but not slitting it's throat. Go figure?
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by dolimite35 on 23 Jul 2005 - 01:05
plastic surgery? you bring up plastic sergery, its not sex or violence.
Quote this comment #6.2 Posted by Sticktron on 23 Jul 2005 - 16:17
But that's the point... it IS seen as sex, even though its just a nipple in a medical show. There is little distinction when it comes to American censors. Nudity is completely natural and harmless, yet censored, while graphic violence and language are OK. Backwards, for sure. But then, America's history is Puritan, no?

There is in fact a cheat that disables the censoring in Sims 2 without an additional patch... but someone should tell this guy that the models don't even have genitals and the skin texture is a solid colour. Of course it's possible to add these things into the game (considering the nature of the Sims 2, this is no surprise though, because practically anything can be added into the game). But when does EA become responsible for things that someone does to their video game that they bought and modded themselves? Hmm.....
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by Scibbers on 23 Jul 2005 - 04:10
yeah, I am worried that this stupidity is going to hit the games that are meant to be modded next. Ex: Unreal Tournament: no nudity here, but there are several "nude" skins floating around the internet that people have made themselves.

Thompson doesn't buy it. "The sex and the nudity are in the game. That's the point. The blur is an admission that even the 'Ken and Barbie' features should not be displayed. The blur can be disarmed. This is no different than what is in San Andreas, although worse."

...

(UPDATE) Thompson this afternoon updated his earlier statement, saying he is aware certain mods only remove "the blur," but adds that "Electronic Arts has done nothing about this." Thompson's new conclusion: EA is "cooperating, gleefully, with the mod community to turn Sims 2 into a porn offering."

OMG!!!
Barbie dolls should be baned because they are promoting PORNOGRAPHY to CHILDREN with their removable clothing and smooth featureless genitalia! Barbies sister, Stacie, isn't even a teenager yet, her doll promotes Pedophileism at an early age!!!

And above all Mattel doesn't prevent the removal of the clothing almost as if suggesting that the clothing should be removed!!!!! obviously Mattel is "cooperating, gleefully, with the child community to turn Barbie into a porn offering!"

Also, sending kids to school is irresponsibly letting them out of the house, and using walls in the construction of buildings promotes graffiti.

And in other news, all lawyers and politicians are idiots

BAKA^NI!!!!!

JESUS CHRIST PARENT YOUR GOD DAM* KIDS!!! Every problem in this fuc*ing country has to be blamed on someone or something other then the individual, it makes me sick. you don't want kids to have this game, don't let them buy it! you don't want them playing it at a friend's house, tell their parents. they still play it, ground them! games/media in other countries are far worse but do you see killings or violence hapen because of them? NO! why? because they don't blame the games/media they blame the individual and if the individual is not old enough the parent. That or maybe they just parent better over there or society raises you to know the difference between reality and a god dam* game. so what does this say about our country? basically that its a joke!
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by Joshie on 23 Jul 2005 - 04:02
That'd be fine as long as it made sure a society didn't put so much stock into personal responsibility that they ignored the impact environment has on people's decisions. We are, after all, social creatures.

But yeah, once a certain threshold is crossed, it's not a matter of passing blame anymore. Own up.

Having sex (or showing genitals) in a video game = Bad.

Sex = pleasure, comfort, security, life.
Pain = Misery, insanity, death.

What the hell is wrong here?

The problem with politics is that most politicians try to force their own beliefs down the throats of the public. They are supposed to be elected by the people for the people, but this is hardly ever the case. Politics nowadays consists of nothing more than Christian extremists trying to force people to live the way they feel the American public should live. With each passing day, more of our rights get flushed down the toilet.

Totally irrelevant. That's your best comment on the matter? And to answer your question, a lot of people. Otherwise "The Sims" wouldn't be one of the best selling franchises in the PC Games industry.

On-topic now...

I've played Sims 1, Sims 2 & University and I know... Below the blur it's just a barbie-style body, no genitalia at all... Unless the shape of a breast with no nipple is explicit. The person is just beeeegging for popularity.

It's true. You CAN remove the blur with a cheat in the console. It's just a parameter about the blur density that if you set to 0, it makes it go away. But there's nothing below that's explicit or teen in any way. Even the "Make Love" or "Try for Baby" actions provide a qutie comical cutscene which looks vaguely like sex... And I mean really vaguely.

I completely agree with Broken Halo. The level of nudity is just the same with Barbie. Either type a cheat or take off the dress. We shall see Thompson putting an AO rating on Barbie pretty soon folks.

I doubt there will be a "hack" for this but if it does I will still continue playing it, just to spite Mr. Johnson. He has his right to an opinion, regardless of its merits. Just don't infringe upon my rights as an adult to entertain myself with video games of my own free will and choice. This again is to appease the few despite the many.

The more he pursues these games the more they will sell. Is he working for or against the game companies?

I've been playing The Sims 2 since it came out and I must say that Jack Thompson is 1) a total idiot for making such accusations, and 2) incredibly ignorant, like most politicians are when it comes to video games.

It always gets me fuming whenever I see the media blame video games (Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and now GTA) for the actions of idiot teens who kill other people. GTA San Andreas is now rated AO because of bitch Hillary Clinton (and friends), so now all my favorite stores (such as Gamestop) don't carry the game -- or the players guide -- anymore. And now we have this fool who says that The Sims 2 is virtual porn!

I think the ultimate problem is the fact that the older generation (the politicians that run this backwards nation) aren't used to video games having such a dramatic impact on our, and the world's, culture, and are not trying to play the games before making such idiotic suggestions, such as what Jack Thompson said. Maybe our generation will run things differently once we are the ones in power instead of our parents and grand-parents.
Quote this comment #40.1 Posted by rm20010 on 24 Jul 2005 - 04:46
You know, they (especially this asshole) fail to recognize this:

Out of 1000 players:

- 830 play the game.
- 100 become hooked onto the game, and in the process ruin their lifestyles.
- 60 suffer an influence from the game: for instance, changed behaviour and attitude

And finally:

- 10 actually go out and commit crimes.

Now is the game worth complaining about for that small group of fools who don't know better? Bleh, even these political boneheads won't ever get that.

BTW: players guide removed? Oh, maybe it's because they printed out pictures from the Hot Coffee scene in invisible ink.

I shall now refer to some online resources. As I have little knowledge about these laws I'd have to go by what it says on this site.

From here:

QUOTE

Offense of Stalking; defines term "cyberstalk" to mean communication by means of electronic mail or electronic communication which causes substantial emotional distress & does not serve legitimate purpose;

He's going though anything BUT emotional distress. In fact he's probably having an overdose of adrenaline over the BS he stirred up.

Legitimate purpose: well if everyone constructively explained why his reasonings are wrong, it's legitimate. Never mind, he thinks he's right and everyone's wrong. Look how he plainly dismissed Jeff Brown's statement.

QUOTE

includes within offenses of stalking & aggravated stalking willful, malicious, & repeated cyberstalking of another person;

Everyone probably mailed him ONCE. We're not harassing him; we're expressing our opinions on his actions.

There's a longer definition here but I'm quite short of time to read the entire thing.

EDIT: hunter-killer, I think he's sending the same email to nearly everyone that flames him. No need for anyone else to debate s**t with him since he'll give the same response.

As an update:

QUOTE

Thompson this afternoon updated his earlier statement, saying he is aware certain mods only remove "the blur," but adds that "Electronic Arts has done nothing about this." Thompson's new conclusion: EA is "cooperating, gleefully, with the mod community to turn Sims 2 into a porn offering."

Makes sense? He doesn't even state that the graphic depictions of human parts don't exist in the first place, even with the blur removed. Turning Sims 2 into a porn offering? Last time I checked it stimulates real life. And last time I checked THERE ARE NO BLURS COVERING OUR OWN ORGANS SO WE CAN'T SEE THEM!

Sadly the only thing that can stop this greedy fu**er is a strong legal team with millions of dollars on their backs. Otherwise we're all screwed.

I'm getting sick of all this. Why don't they ban the Nightly News and the show Cops. Maximum Exposure is another one. I see more violence, hate crimes, acts of abuse, etc on the local news than in video games.

or banning any news about Iraq and their "killing people for peace is cool and justified the tax's raise"

for christs sake, the kids that see it are gonna see it anyway, what does it matter if theyve seen a penis or two people having sex in a video game, Apart from anything im pretty sure 99% of people who play Sims 2 would be over say 10 which would mean they would, or should be starting their sexual education programmes at school, American Politicians and people like this twat need to get real and get a ****ing life

what i find stupid is that games shoudnt have AO rattings for stuff fans make... if u look at it hot coffe is a mod and only able to be activated with the help of a mod... why remove it off the shelfe for something that isnt "really" in tha game (aussie)... this is same with sims 2
