Valve set to release Source Engine version of Day of Defeat by end of the month

Valve Software has announced that officially sponsored Half Life mod Day of Defeat will shortly be made available for download via the developer's digital distribution service, Steam. DoD is a class-based multiplayer add-on with a World War II theme that began life as an amateur mod. It will be made available as a standalone purchase via Steam, and will be free of charge to Half-Life 2 Silver and Gold subscribers. Owners of the boxed edition of Counter-Strike Source will also be able to download the game for free. Valve added that players will be given a week's notice to pre-order and download all the necessary files, so that once the game is ready to play there will be no waiting time.

I quite like Source. Granted 1.6 was probably better but they didn't do too much wrong.

I agree with Kerm, CS: S isn't that bad ... and from what I've seen, in the way of screenshots, DoD: S looks awesome!
#2.3 djesteban on 07 Sep 2005 - 15:01
your probably saying that because you can't cheat like before anymore or that you have to pay for it....
CS 1.6 graphic are just laughable now if you ask me and anyone still playing that is in my opinion... a little..hmm...heh

What about the people playing games like Tetris and SMB3? Those graphics aren't so good yet gameplay is stellar.

Also, the gameplay for CS1.6 and CS: S is essentially the same.

1.6 = shield
source = no shield
therefore, logically source>1.6

it had tobe said. turn off tha zig.

Wow, one year later....

I'd love to see you port a game to a new engine.
#5.2 Hurmoth on 07 Sep 2005 - 12:44
I personally have had the same feelings as "i like chips," however, we all have to stop and think what would we be happier with. After reading a lot and listening to a lot of stuff coming out of Valve, they went back and completely redid the entire game built on the Source Engine. This way the game looks and feels better then just a pure port.
#5.3 bangbang023 on 07 Sep 2005 - 15:04
Exactly, Hurmoth. It was originally going to be a straight port, same graphics and all and then they changed their mind, scrapped what they had done, and started all over completely remaking it.

^ OK points taken. But, I feel jipped. I mean, I was expecting this within a few months of buying my silver edition HL2. Maybe when I actually start to play, it will change the way I feel, if infact they have improved this over the original.

will retail purchased DVD editions registered through steam qualify for DOD or will we have to pay for it?
#6.1 huFFamOOse on 07 Sep 2005 - 12:18
Nope, standard retail version is like bronze with only Half-life 2 and Counter-strike:source. You'll have to pay unless you have already upgraded to a silver.

i cant wait for all the bitching from the people who didnt buy Silver/Gold, who think their purchase should come with a free game as well as those of us who supported Valve or paid the extra money to get the Steam version of HL2.
#7.1 stifler6478 on 07 Sep 2005 - 15:20
hell, I hadnt played any valve games EVER, and I bought the Silver package

#7.2 huFFamOOse on 07 Sep 2005 - 23:00
and what about those who prefer buying a copy of the game from the shops instead of the internet?
#7.3 EKS on 07 Sep 2005 - 23:21
then you must buy DoD in the store.
#8 Erich on 07 Sep 2005 - 13:06
I bought an ATI card off ebay for $20 (CDN) and then paid an additional $10 (USD) to upgrade to silver just for this game. About time :p

God i hope this is soon, mainly because Gabe said that they’re not releasing RDKF (Rag Doll Kung Fu) until they have released this!!!
#10 j0j081 on 08 Sep 2005 - 03:34
I am pod I paid 80 dollars US for the CE and don't get this for free. I know I should have done my research first but I assumed for that price I'd have about equal to the silver steam package.
