Launched in March across Europe and due for release in US territories at the end of the year, Tiger Telematics' Gizmondo is already being re-designed, with a new version due in 2006. Mike Carrender, CEO, Tiger Telematics stated that the company plans to better compete with Sony's PSP, which enjoyed the biggest launch weekend of any console in the UK, shifting approximately 185,000 units at retail in the first three days.

Based on a Samsung ARM9 400MHz processor and utilising an NVIDIA GeForce 3D 4500 graphics accelerator, the handheld incorporates gaming, MP3 functions, MPEG4 movie playback, digital camera, GPS chip plus Bluetooth, and GPRS for networked gaming and text messaging. With a two-tiered pricing plan, the handheld will be available for USD 400 or USD 239 for an advertising subsidised model which displays up to three consumer adverts per day using Smart Ads. Retailing at approximately USD 249 for the Value Pack, Sony's PSP would still seem to be a far more commercially viable system, although Carrender believes that 80% of consumers will opt for the ad-subsidised version and is convinced that the additional features of the Gizmondo will boost sales figures.

Tiger is kidding right? They're so far out of their league it isn't even worth laughing about. The unit is not competition to the PSP at this point. Heck, probably not at any point. Those that wanted a PSP have already bought one, why on Earth would they buy another high-priced unit without any proven games or developer support? Sure, playing music and movies can be nice on the road, but it sure isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I'm getting a little tired of seeing all these companies jump on the bandwagon. I don't need a whole lifetime of TV, movies, photographs and music on my person at any given time of the day! Not to mention the smaller screen, and as many PSP owners, fans and fanboys alike will tell you, the PSP screen is sex. With a capital S. Sex.

An advertising subsidized unit really gets me going too. As far as I'm concerned, ad-subsidized hardware should be totally free. Why should I pay to be advertised to? Sure, I get a discount at the time I buy, but that means I have to put up with ads for the lifetime of the unit. That's worth a bit more than $160USD to me.

There simply isn't enough of the handheld gaming pie to share around. Everything Nntendo doesn't have Sony does - and no developer in their right mind would waste money developing for yet another system with a totally different architecture.

Its not Tiger, the crappy games maker. It's tiger telematics, a very good GPS system manafacturer.

I can't take anything called "Gizmondo" seriously... especially when they have a link called "My Giz" on their homepage.

Lol i am not a nintendo fanboy but with nintendo outselling the psp right now and with sony having the psp on the market there is no way this gizmondo thing will sell anything. especially with gta coming out for the psp and animal crossing ds,mario kart, mario ds, and metroid prime hunters for the ds all with internet play being released soon .

You already own an overpriced piece of junk. The PSP.

You are just jealous
Quote this comment #9.3 Posted by SecretAgentMan on 13 Sep 2005 - 13:34
Not really. I just know the difference between a good product and a bad (junk) product.
Quote this comment #9.4 Posted by nookadum on 13 Sep 2005 - 14:44
Maybe you should try it out (as in play with it, mod it, etc.) before you call it 'junk'. Me and a lot of other people are having a blast with it. NFS, Midnight Club 3, the upcoming GTA:LCS, etc. There's a lot of good stuff to play around with.

And the fact that you can mod it (DivX/XviD, Linux, Windows 95, etc.) makes it even more enjoyable.

But hey, since you think Sony's products are crap, go ahead and keep thinking that way. A lot of other people (including me) are enjoying it, regardless if the DS has "outsold" it by large margin. (But I have a DS (ADVANCE WARS!!) too, so it's kinda moot point to say it sucks when it really doesn't.)
Quote this comment #9.5 Posted by SecretAgentMan on 13 Sep 2005 - 17:51
I have played games on both the PSP and DS nookadum but I never said that Sony products are crap in my previous two comments. I said Sony sells junk products.
Quote this comment #9.6 Posted by nookadum on 13 Sep 2005 - 18:04
Yeah, you never said they were 'crap', but you said they were 'bad', which is practically the same thing. Nintendo, Microsoft, (Sony included) etc. also have 'junk' products, but they're not bad.

Ah well, to each their own. Personally, the PSP is pretty damn good for what it can do, but I can agree with it being a bit overpriced. But it's worth it if you know what to do with it.

I think this is great news! If Tiger can pull this off, maybe in retaliation Sony will reduce the price of the PSP then I can get one! (I just can't afford AUSD$400 for a handheld system, and considering the the system it's roughly based off is around AUSD$250..I want to see a price drop before I get me one (PSP) )

I wouldn't pay over 200 dollars for a PORTABLE GAMING MACHINE.
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by Kurono on 13 Sep 2005 - 13:58
Yet people are willing to pay that much for an mp3 player... >.>
Quote this comment #12.2 Posted by Trevsweb on 13 Sep 2005 - 21:05
or the PSP for that matter
giz on ebgames.com is $200 for a GPS system thats cheap but to get the other stuff too is good value.
ok graphics arent psp quality and games lineup is slow but this is a brand new company starting up in the gaming industry and has no past experiances to help it along the way unlike the super dooper nintendo DS or the "lets cram everthing into a box, who cares if we dont do anything new" psp.

Gizmondo already has two great innovative things to wait for their camera tech which makes the camera into an analogue controler, and augmented reality merging 3d game world into the real world.

i think it was prolly unwise to let it slip to the wrong person about this wide screen version sure itll blow apart psp with a better screen and graphics but i dont want a hella big unportable system like the psp.

With homebrew an inch away from the gizmondo there will be alot of excitement over the gizmondo soon, sure the psp has homebrew but it would cost a bit more for less stuff.

i really doubt anyone here slagging off the gizmondo have even touched one, lol let alone getting the company behind the giz's name right (Tiger telematics not electronics).

And what "big name" games are available for this Gizmondo?
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by Liquid on 13 Sep 2005 - 15:38
EA, but do they count?
Quote this comment #15.2 Posted by Dodgy on 13 Sep 2005 - 16:54
they just change the box art every year

with the name gizmondo, its just gonna get laughed at & i find it hard for any company new to the portable games market to state that they'll compete with sony, but hey mayb the gizmondo will b cool?
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #16 Posted by Neo-Havic on 13 Sep 2005 - 16:33
OMG how can they think its gonna hurt the PSP? ITS A PORTABLE PLAYSTATION FOR CHRISTS SAKE! Besides, MaximumPC only gave the Gizmondo a 3 outta 10, so i dont have any faith in this thing anyways.
Quote this comment #16.1 Posted by Trevsweb on 13 Sep 2005 - 21:11
maximumpc reviewed a very early gizmondo, there has been a firmware update (much like the PSP's) that has stopped majority of the crashes people have experianced, also theres a few more games availible now, check out stickyballs and richard burns rally both very nice games, colors is one of giz's highlights.
its not gonna touch on the DS or PSP's sales but it'll make nintendo and psp think a little harder to plug gaps in the future.

So where's Wi-Fi then? And belive me nobody is going to pay U$400 for that and defnately not even $249.00 with adverts! If I bought another handheld it would be a PSP.

But at the moment I'm sticking with Nintendo DS and awaiting GBA 2.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #21 Posted by slik da relic on 16 Sep 2005 - 19:50
it shouldve had a phone included... then i would carry that and the psp instead of the ngage... thats what they shouldve been after, i wouldve bought it without hesitation.
