Sony has released another firmware upgrade for their ever popular PSP handheld console. This brings the version number upto 2.50.

The three main features of this updated firmware are:
- DRM Support for copyright-protected video content.
- Streaming video over wireless networks is also now possible using Sony's LocationFree technology.
- The loophole that allowed users of the 2.00 firmware to downgrade to 1.5 so they could play homebrew software and pirated games has been fixed.

The rest of the updates are bug fixes and the ability to set the consoles time from the internet. The update should be available worldwide soon with US and Japan already having access.

I don't have a PSP so I don't get it, what's with the firmware updates? If you don't update, than you can't play games? Isn't that the reason you buy a PSP, to play games?
Quote this comment #2.1 Posted by SHoTTa35 on 13 Oct 2005 - 21:02
well the update adds wifi stuff as stated. And a few bugs. And also to block homebrew peoples. With 1.5 you can play pirated games. With 2.5 Homebrew no longer works so no pirated games.

You seem to have a problem with separating Homebrew and piracy.

They are two diffrent things.
Repeat after me: Two different things.

I have Homebrew on my PSP with v1.50 firmware.
Does that mean that I'm a pirate now?

Edit: Sorry, need to get som sleep.

DRM support too! Wow this is a killer update! Makes me want to run out and buy a PSP...
Is Sony even listening to their customers?

steaming video ... that *almost* makes it worth it

but what is the quality
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by Cailin on 14 Oct 2005 - 02:25
The LocationFree TV technology is actually quite good... but the idea is that you need to have a LocationFree TV box already (which is... $700? Go check the Sony Store). But the technology is incredible; it basically allows you to stream TV over the Internet from your home to this wireless tablet device. Meaning that you could be in Tokyo and watching Good Morning America on ABC.

Firmwire? Uhm... I sense a typo. Just so you guys know.

EDIT: It's actually spelled like that through the whole article... o.o
Is that a funky british spelling I am not aware of?

I write "Firmware". I don't see how "wire" is related.

To me it sounds like when people write "kernal" instead of "kernel".

My mistake, I always thought it was Firmwire, and the spell checker never picked it up as an error....I'll change it now
Quote this comment #10.5 Posted by Khrysller on 14 Oct 2005 - 13:27
dunno why but seen to be mine and other (at last) post was deleted, cause we was talking about the mistake on 'firmwire'... (at last i talk about piracy in the same post...).

anyway...
good to see things like that here

Don't buy a brand new PSP with that firmware in it, until cracked.

It's your PSP, upgrade if you want. Every time a new firmware is released every forum is filled with people practically yelling at everyone else to not update. Why does anyone care? Does it hurt you if I choose to upgrade a device I own? You are not everyone else. Not everyone uses their PSP in the same way as everybody else.

And of course homebrew does not equal piracy. Though for piracy you need homebrew.

why doesnt sony just allow the console to play homebrewed *which by the way means home maded [home brew refferring to tea etc] games, made by entusiasts... or do they not want us to play free games on their expensive console?

i mean its a good console and all, but the games are VERY expensive for what they are...

I'd say that's exactly what their reason is. Assuming that the PSP is like nearly every other console ever sold, the company takes a loss on the hardware in order to sell the software.

I think I will keep to 1.50, so that I can run all my old Mega Drive/Genesis and Gameboy Games (I did originally have them in the 90s, and I think most licences say that if you had the original game you can run the ROM on your PC/PSP)

Yay for Sonic, Lemmings, Ms. Pacman and Tetris!

That really sucks. I really like the Homebrew stuff. I hope I can still play the mini flash games in the browser still.
