Microsoft has unveiled details of the Xbox Live Marketplace Content that will be available to Xbox 360 owners from the moment the console launches in Europe on December 2. There will be more than 400 items of downloadable content available, including free playable demos of FIFA 06, Kameo, King Kong, NBA Live 06 and Need for Speed Most Wanted, plus a wide range of game trailers, pictures and desktop themes.

As well as free content, the Xbox Live Marketplace will offer premium content which can be bought with Microsoft Points. These can be purchased via the Xbox Live Dashboard or from game retailers, priced at GBP 17.50 for 2100 points. Gamer pictures will retail for 20 points each, while themes will cost 150 points. Prices for additional game content - such as six extra cars that owners of Ridge Racer 6 will be able to purchase - have yet to be decided.

I think the point system is a great idea.
especially as you can buy them at a retail store.

I can't wait until the PS3 so I can get a PS2. I mean, I've only bought the other two consoles (Xbox and Gamecube) because I got extremely good deals on them, and that was about all I had. Trust me, I know what I'm missing on the PS2. Luckily, by the PS3 I'll be able to pick up a refurb PS2 for 50 bucks and games for 10.

Does this bother anyone else? Mean, I know they have to make money, but charging for a display picture? Thankfully, you get free points every time you renew your subscription, I believe.

They already do it for 'premium' MSN messenger content and people buy it, so why not?

Companys will take this opportunity to cut back on levels on games just so they can charge from them on LIVE. I don't mind the business model but my concerns companys will abuse it.

this isn't really anything new; paying for additional content in games with real money. pc games have been doing it for years. collating it all into a central portal with a common mechanism for purchasing content is new, and ms should be applauded for doing it, and doing it right. if anything it shows they 'get' gamers, and game developers more than some of the other developers out there.

Buy half a game now at full price and the other half of the maps/characters/cars later. Way to rip users off.

Every new article I read about the Xbox 360 just makes me more and more glad I'm a PC gamer.

Want a new level for that latest racing game? Pay up!

I think charging for all of this stuff is stupid. It's probably because they lose millions each year on xbox, so wanna try and reduce that by charging for everything.
