Bethesda Softworks, the developers of the upcoming mega-hit in the making Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, announced today that they had obtained the license to the Star Trek universe for all consoles, handhelds and the PC. In addition Bethesda announced that two games were already in development to be released this year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Star Trek. The previously announced Star Trek: Legacy, which will be released on the X-Box 360 and the PC, and Star Trek: Tactical Assault which will be released on the PSP and DS.

Star Trek: Legacy is a next-gen RTS game, which puts you in the role of an Admiral commanding a large fleet of ships. The game will include full damage modeling, amazing special effects and of course beautifully rendered Starfleet ships blasting the Borg (among others). Legacy will allow you to engage in an all out war across multiple Star systems, and will have full multiplayer support which will also include full stats tracking and player ranking. The game is set for release sometime in September for the PC and X-Box 360 and is being developed by Mad Doc Software, who ironically developed Star Trek: Armada II.

Star Trek: Tactical Assault is a handheld game set in the original Star Trek universe and will feature real-time combat. The game will allow you to engage in singleplayer using either a Federation or Klingon campaign. Multiplayer will support wireless to wireless connection. The game is being developed by QuickSilver Software who also developed Star Trek: Starfleet Command. Tactical Assault is scheduled to be released in September as well.

Star Trek: Online is completely sepereate from this deal. That game has been in development for over a year now. This deal however, means any future Star Trek games would be out of Bethesda. That isn't to say Bethesda couldn't have someone else develop it for them, they just control the licenses for the universe.
