Sony said on Tuesday its new video game console, the PlayStation 3, does not run about 200 PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles properly, the latest problem the electronics maker has run into in its cash-cow game business. Sony said audio features do not work on some software titles when played on the PS3, which is supposed to be compatible with games designed for its previous models, while some other titles do not work on the latest machine at all. "There are always sorts of little problems at launch ... It may take some time to make everything compatible, but I don't think it's a huge problem," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.
Indeed, Microsoft received customer complaints following its Xbox launch in Japan in 2002 that the console was scratching game discs, while Sony's PS2, which it released in 2000, had compatibility problems with PS games. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), Sony's game unit, plans to fix the PS3 problems by offering online upgrades for system software, SCE spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said.
The PS3 will be launched in North America on Friday. Gamers in Europe must wait until March due to a glitch in commercial production of blue laser diodes, a key component of the game gear's Blu-ray high-definition DVD player.

whats even worse is you pay all that money for the system and then it craps out on you. imo it makes no sense whatsoever to buy anything on day 1 release anymore. and then if you dont buy their 'extended warranty' for another 1000 nothing gets fixed
either they cannot do proper programming for emulator
or PS3 is so weak that will not be able to emulate those titles ? O_o
I remember reading an article where they said they pretty much took a PS2 and shrunk it to fit on the PS3 hardware and that's what allowed the backwards compatibility?
I don't see how any software update would fix that
BTW...for all the Sony fanboys out there. How does it make you feel that Sony is starting to confirm all these issues that have been brought up months ago by others and right before it's released? The 360 also had it's issues, but IMHO they were nothing compared to the issues that the PS3 currently has.
This is why anyone hoping to get ANY next-gen console on launch day, should take the money and wait a few months AFTER it's released.
It's also BS that things like this should happen with any console. They release a product knowing it has problems then want everyone to buy it anyway and update it over the network. Not everone who buys these systems will have the ability to update them over a network. The only thing those people can do is hope whatever company released the console also releases updates on disks they can use on their consoles. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony did that and charged for it.
Huh?
The 360 launch was a DISASTER.
Fact: Sony will have more units on launch day.
Fact: The PS3 still is backwards compatible with the majority of PS2 titles (hundreds & hundreds). Meanwhile, I can't play favorites like "Panzer Dragoon Orta" or "MechAssault" on my 360.
Fact: the PS3 runs quieter & cooler than the 360. Sometimes I mistake mine for a small hairdryer.
Fact: you cite the PS3 being able to update over the network. How do you think the 360 gets updated?
Fact: the 360 build is of so low quality that MS had to extend the warranty of anyone who bought it within the first 6 months of release.
So before you start throwing the word "fanboy" around you'd better look in the mirror and get the facts straight.
Not to mention they (PS3's) have been seen to be suffering from the same overheating and crashing XBox has had. Many people will argue that inside a cabinet is not a typical usage for a PS3 but guess what...it is. Many families will have them inside multimedia cabinets.
Also while the Xbox doesnt support all backwards compatible games like the post you replied to pointed out these issues are ALOT easier to fix in software. If it is a hardware fault this doesnt bode well not just for backwards compatability which will be more costly to fix but the rest of the hardware in general.
Sony's release wont be the failure some make it out to be and realistically the 1st 3 months in the consoles life wont make or break a console over a 5 year lifespan anyway but its certainly a very flawed leadup to the release and I dont see how currently its doing any better than the Xbox at all.
Meanwhile the majority of PS3 units will be made in JAPAN.
Asus of TAIWAN will be making other units. (PC builders swear by Asus motherboards by the way).
Not to mention they (PS3's) have been seen to be suffering from the same overheating and crashing XBox has had.
Citing that PS3s locked inside display cases and playing for hours on end at trade shows is hardly an example of the overheating and general failures the 360 had at launch. The 360 seems to give out after about 9 months. Having to keep both the unit and power brick unusually well ventilated is not good design.
Families with media cabinets? The majority of media stands made these days are open and well ventilated. Not small plastic enclosures.
LiIon batteries and consumer goods aren't even in the same ballpark. Might as well blame the 360's heat failures on the Windows ME team.
And perhaps closed media cabinets arent the norm but neither are the Xbox failures. Its a percentage as is the number of people who will be placing the PS3 in cabinets.
Hell without it being released you cant really claim that its going to run better or be more reliable than the 360. Again I'll point out the fact the PS2's had major issues in relation to the optical drives so it's not as if Sony hasnt had design issues with Playstations in the past. And if it's made in China or Japan or wherever is really irrelevant if the actual design isnt up to par. The heating issues could be an indicator that something is amiss or it could have been an isolated, now solved, issue.
That said you cant just say "noone will be putting the PS in a confined area or its fine". Isnt that exactly the same arguement you can use to defend MS and its same overheating issues. "ohh theres no overheating issue...just dont put it in a confined space". You cant criticise MS for its console having issues in a confined space and then turn around and defend Sonys console crashing because it was also in a confined space. That really makes no sense.
Hopefully there wont be issues but citing that it is a "fact" that the PS3 runs cooler to me seems pretty misleading especially given many of the reports that have gone out.

1. Sony hasn't shipped for launch day, so how can this be a fact? Can you see the future? Have you looked at Sony's books?
2. Sure, but I already have the last gen system so I don't really care. It still isn't 100% backward compatible as Sony claimed it would be.
3. Have you played a PS3? Have you used a thermal sensor to verify this? Have you used a decibel meter to verify this?
4. They both use network connections, so what difference does it make? The first Xbox also used game discs to update the software.
5. The failure rate of the 360 is below industry average. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xbox360_whatsnext.asp Yes it is a Microsoft biased site, but it is illegal for Microsoft to misrepresent the failure rate. Many of the failures were due to people not reading directions and not having proper ventilation for the system. That is not a failure of the system, it is user error.
Microsoft said they were doing a worldwide launch. They did just that. They sold out in 2 of 3 markets they launched in. How is that a "DISASTER"?
Um. You make 2 units. You sell both of them. Sell out, right?
There were even fewer 360 units available than the PS3. Not to mention they hoarded some for the Japanese launch. THAT was a bigger bomb (the "3 out of 2 out of 3 you mention).
The PS3 will sell out every market 3 out of 3. Look at the lines camped outside stores now (Japan's already sold out).

Its not like weve waited an extra year for it or anything

How do you know how many PS3s are shipping for tomorrow's launch? Again, you have absolutely nothing to support your "facts".
