Nintendo has revealed that Wii’s opening weekend sales figures across Europe were every bit as impressive as its record-breaking UK debut – with 325,000 units snapped up in the territory.
Retail outlets across the continent sold out of the console hours after it went on sale last Friday. eBay has already been flooded with second-hand Wiis – which are proving popular with frantic fans keen to get their hands on the format before Christmas.

The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess shared a strong European tie ratio with the console, selling 240,000 in the weekend. Wii Play was also a big hit, with over 50 per cent of Wii buyers picking up a copy of the title.

Marketing director of Nintendo Europe Laurent Fischer said: “Wii has become an overnight success in Europe with people of all ages rushing out to get their hands on the console.

Also super-strong sales in Australia, too! It surpassed the XBox 360 and the PSP opening weekend sales records.

I've been playing my mate's wii all week (he got it on the UK release...more or less) and I have to admit, it's really really really great fun. I was sceptical, I'm not a console gamer at all but the Wii surprised me with just how fun it can be.

How can the Marketing director for Nintendo Europe know what the ages of people buying the console are?

However I have to say that I haven't bought one as I'm not a console guy....but if I did buy any Console this Xmas, it would be the Wii

The guy in my local HMV said their first two deliveries of Wii consoles consisted of 9 and 10, respectively.
