The first results are out in the hotly contested market for video game consoles in Japan, and so far, the results do not look too promising for Sony and its much-promoted PlayStation 3. Enterbrain, a market research company, released sales estimates on Wednesday showing that Sony fell far short of its goal of selling one million PlayStation 3s in Japan last year. Sony sold 534,336 consoles from their Nov. 11 debut in Japan to Jan. 7, Enterbrain said.
By contrast, Enterbrain reported that Nintendo sold 1.14 million units of its less expensive new game console, Wii, from its introduction Dec. 2 until Jan. 7. Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which has had limited success breaking into the Japanese market, has sold 311,053 units since arriving in December 2005, Enterbrain said. “We can’t keep Wiis in our stores,” said Naoko Ito, a spokeswoman for Bic Camera, one of Japan’s largest electronics retailers. “But we still have plenty of PlayStations.”

no only in Japan...
no only in Japan...
is that meant to read "NOT only in japan..." ?
they arent even out in the UK, i feel that sony is going to learn a harsh lesson and probably try and rebound for the PS4
i still trying to get a wii, but i'm always 2 steps behind, everywhere i turn is sold out
Where do you live that the Wii isn't less than half the price of the PS3?
Well this is NOT at all surprising. We are talking Japan here folks and they ALWAYS have favored nintendo very heavily compared to any other consle..
Sony didn't sell 1 million units because it could not build and ship 1 million units.. Honestly even if they could have it still wouldn't matter because Japan gamers have always been Nintendo fanbois...
This is the first time Sony has launched into full competition without the full support of third parties, Sony is over-estimating the brand power of Playstation and it'll hurt them greatly over the next few years, with Microsoft and Nintendo take up Sony's lost marketshare (but right now the Wii might get consumers that Sony or Microsoft would never get).
Its a shame too, since Sony has bet everything on the PS3 and if they lose their no.1 position they lose everything. Since sony is deep in the red, they are relying on the PS3 (and thus also Blu-ray) to pull them out of their deficit (because for quite some time the Playstation brand has been the only thing keeping them afloat).
I swear that if Sony ever go bankrupt I will throw a huge party celebrating this event.
The "rootkit monster" needs to die and die painfully
Sayonara Sony, burn in hell

Can I have an invite please ???????????
Dislike sony for several reasons, mostly though for buying up as many small game studios they could find when the ps1 was released and making all their future games ps1 exclusives, im sure thats something many have chosen to forget or too young to remember.
come back again a year or 2 years from now, then we can begin to make some realstic predictions.

No this clearly shows that the ps3 has failed. People don't want it when there are other consoles that are better and cheaper. Nobody, or virtually nobody, cares that the ps3 has a cell processor and a bluray disc and don't see the point in paying 400usd extra just for that, especially when blu-ray is already starting to look like a failure.
