When John Carmack speaks, the industry tends to listen. While it can be argued that his influence today on the gaming industry isn’t as big as it was when nearly every 3D shooter was using one of his Quake engines, he is still regarded as part of the heart of that keeps PC gaming alive. He continues to influence gaming hardware too, especially in the area of graphics. In fact, NVIDIA and ATI consult with John Carmack on design decisions when engineering new GPUs.

Carmack and id Software were recognized last week with two Technology Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for the areas “pioneering development work in 3D game engines” and “technological leadership in rendering breakthroughs with the Quake technology.”

He is right in saying that DX10 will be held back by a lack of XP support, but I think it is worth the switch - and the quicker we do it, the faster the devs will. As for the Vista comments, Carmack isn't really the source I'd look at for oppinions on upgrading my OS.

Well, since these devs aren't paying for my upgrade, I'll upgrade when I feel like it. I don't like being a paying beta-tester for software companies, especially Microsoft, I won't upgrade until Vista is stable and there's some reason to use it. The only reason for me will be must-play DX10-only games, there is not a single other Vista feature that I want or need.

That's my opinion, don't tell me I have to upgrade to support the troops or some other such nonsense.

Uh...does anyone really care what he has to say any more?

It's not like Quake 4 was a good game.
In fact, they really haven't had a great game in quite sometime.

The point is not wether he has created great games or not, but he is an incredibly good 3D engine programmer.

Well he's good anyway.

But the doom/quake engines have been lagging behind Unreal engine for a few versions now. and even HL pretty much beats their latest engine, though I suppose QW:ET is a chance for them to redeem themselves, but it doesn't really seem like it's got anything on UE3.

Besides yeah who listens to this guy anymore.. he pretty much lost any worthwhile opinion after he ****ed on hiw own doom/quake fans when some version of UT sold way better than Quake, and he flamed his fans for being ungrateful or something...

And it's not like Carmack is the one who does all that much of the programming anyway. when the last time you saw a boss do any real work :p

I don't really think ID's engines have lagged behind at all. Quake 2's engine came before the original UT engine and the Quake 3 engine before the Unreal 2 engine (quake 3 came out about the same time as the original unreal tournament). Both of these engines were better than anything else at the time until Epic released their new games in the following year or so after the ID game. DOOM3's engine was also the top engine for a while until the source engine arrived (or possibly the farcry engine) and when you see a game looking as good as Enemy Territory it's pretty plain to see that the Doom3 engine has alot of life in it.

The Doom 3 engine wasnt necessarily worse than the Source engine either. They were both created for very different games and while Doom3 didnt win any awards for its physics it's lighting effects were technically (perhaps not visually) superior to anything HL2 had in it in terms of lighting.

Besides, I'm pretty sure Carmack is still largely responsibly for the engine design. There was romours in later games he will be taking a more backwards role so as to concentrate on his hobby of rockets but even the Doom3 engine I think is largely his work.

You do know that Carmack wrote most of the Doom 3 engine himself right?

Yea, if it wasn't for the Source engine, I'd say that the Doom 3 engine was the best at the time...

carmack is one of the few developers that's ahead of the curve. a lot of devs copy the technologies carmack has developed. i'm not saying that's a bad thing, but carmack implements things that haven't been done in the gaming world and brings fresh new ideas to the table. remember the unified lighting was first shown like four years before doom3 was released, before any other game was doing anything like it. it's the same with the megatexture technology. he pretty much implemented it first and im sure other people will pick up on it and use it.

Can't wait to see what ID is doing next

Haha. I like the comments on the link. It is as if Carmack insulted those geek's mothers.
#9 Aahz on 23 Jan 2007 - 16:25
The man is an engine making powerhouse...too bad his dev house sucks at making games for those engines.
#10 Croquant on 23 Jan 2007 - 22:56
Carmack is right about one thing: There's little reason to move from DX9 to DX10 at the moment.
