Punching home a message that Midway is coming to the next-generation with a full stable of goods, the Chicago-based publisher today announced that the game formerly known as Unreal Tournament 2007 is now Unreal Tournament 3. And it's coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the second half of 2007. Using the Unreal Engine 3 (what other engine would it really use?), Epic's seminal first-person shooter will douse gamers with gorgeous, life-like graphics, arm them with unbelievable futuristic and brutal weaponry, and hurl them into online deathmatches like never before.

Run and gun (and swear like a sailor) like never before in UT3.
The new game comprises a vast number of changes from increased aggressiveness and intelligence in the AI to better, more ridiculously powerful weapons to new characters, game modes, and online improvements. New weapons are highlighted by the long-range Shock Rifle and the shorter range Flack Cannon, and more than two dozen weapons will be ready to wield when UT3 is ready in the second half of 2007.

The new single-player campaign is deeper and more engaging than before, and players will be happy to know that old favorite characters have returned and are joined by several new ones. Epic plans to provide advanced online changes to suit all three platforms, bringing seamless loading, improved matchmaking and co-operative campaign online play. Yes, cooperative online play indeed. Familiar online modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag will be joined by an all-new Warfare mode among others. And PC gamers will be happy to get their sweaty mitts on the bundled Unreal Engine Toolset, enabling them to build their own levels, game types, rules, mods, and more.
We'll have more on Unreal Tournament 3 soon. In the meantime check the new screens and video.

Unreal Tournament... Unreal Tournament 2003...

And now, we jump 2,000 versions BACK to Unreal Tournament 3!

Who cares what they call, I just can't wait for this to be released!
#2.1 Slimy on 25 Jan 2007 - 22:25
Agreed. Q207, hurry up and get here!
#2.2 GamblerFEXonlin on 26 Jan 2007 - 20:34
Stop it! The last thing we want is a rushed game with plush sound effekts, stiff animations and funny physics! Think of how they engineer a Ferrari, even closing the doors has a nice sound and feel to it. Ya i thought UT2004 was like that when you fire most weapons.

This name is better cuz no one wants to play 2007 in 2008.. talk about outdated!

This is a better method of naming the games it also can apply to the Unreal Engine version # too.

Agreed, year versions sound more outdated.

I disagree. The year sounded more tournament-like. And anybody that's turned off on playing a game simply because the title is outdated is a moron, I'm sorry.

I don't think they're quite saying that people won't play it because it sounds old, just that it does sound old. Like when I hear "Windows Server 2003", it sounds really, really old - but it doesn't mean people won't use it

Look here. If you had never played or even heard of UT2004, and you were itching for a new PC game but didn't know what, would you pick it up at the store with a title like Unreal Tournament 2004 in 2007? Probably not.

It doesn't make good marketing sense to slap a date on your product unless you really intend to release a new one every year... then it makes complete sense. I really think Epic thought that they could release a revised Unreal Tournament every year back in 2003/2004... but the probably figured out that there wasn't a market for it and didn't want to look like EA's Madden series.

should be IV.... UT, UT2k3 and UT2k4 were before
#4.1 chicken-royal on 25 Jan 2007 - 22:50
Unreal Tournament used Unreal Engine 1

Unreal Tournament 2003 used Unreal Engine 2
Unreal Tournament 2004 used Unreal Engine 2.5

Unreal Tournament 2007/Unreal Tournament 3 uses the Unreal Engine 3, hence the name, Unreal Tournament 3

#4.2 +Smigit on 26 Jan 2007 - 11:00
but that would explain why they called the engine the unreal 3 engine. Still the 4th game IMHO.

ahh well hardly matters.
#4.3 chicken-royal on 26 Jan 2007 - 15:52
Yeah, its still the 4th game, its just games (or the first in a series of games) take the number of the engine. Like GTA3/Vice City/San Andreas run on the same engine, that's why Vice City wasn't GTA4 and San Andreas wasn't GTA5. Whereas GTA4 is the name (currently afaik) of the next GTA game, because it's using a new engine for the next gen consoles.

Doesn't really matter either way. Personally I think UT3 is a better name than UT2007, it shows its on a new engine and a proper new game rather than more of 2003/2004.

#4.4 Shadrack on 29 Jan 2007 - 00:46
Didn't Unreal Tournament 2004 include basically all the content from Unreal Tournament 2003? 2004 was a revision of 2003... and I believe Epic intended there to be a 2005 and 2006 edition as well but changed their mind. So their changing their minds about the titles which is a good change in my opinion.

Stupid if you ask me, losing all the momentum and hype that's been built up for UT2007 by changing the name.
#5.1 Jugalator on 25 Jan 2007 - 23:02
I don't think they'll lose all momentum from just a name change. It'll probably be a lot of word of mouth and reviews that decides how much that hype will be impacted.

Don't scare me like that. It says Europe
#6.3 kravex on 26 Jan 2007 - 13:49
Although play.com is one of the best sites in the UK, it's release dates are also the worst. Sometimes they really do just make them up.
#7 lothodon on 25 Jan 2007 - 22:52
nice trailer at least.
(1 reply) #8 Jugalator on 25 Jan 2007 - 22:58
Hmm, this is because the "200x series" is more about targeting multiplayer, right?

While this one of course has that mode too, it has a large single player campaign as well, so it makes kind of sense from that POV.

It's still a bit strange though, because we had "Unreal", "Unreal 2", and now "Unreal Tournament 3", like some odd mix of their multiplayer-oriented franchise.
But maybe that's their point although it breaks the tradition a bit.
#8.1 Shadrack on 29 Jan 2007 - 00:50
You are way off.

Although Unreal Tournament 3 will have a single player mode, it is targeting multiplayer gameplay. The single player gameplay will be most likely be similar to all the other Unreal Tournament games where 'bots' simulate other players to have the same feel of playing the game online (ala Quake 3 Arena).

[speculation]Unreal 3 will no doubt be released sometime after UT3, and will feature a classic single player FPS campaign to complete.[/speculation]

Year naming was like..... so last year. People that do it now are stupid!
#10 Kushan on 26 Jan 2007 - 02:45
I don't care if they call it fluffy love fest '08 as long as I get to rip someone to shreds with the lovely flak cannon!
#11 AfroTrance on 26 Jan 2007 - 03:27
Yay. UT is the best lan game.

Maybe a delay to have the Xbox 360 version launch at the same time.

#14.1 +TCLN Ryster on 26 Jan 2007 - 23:30
Yeah. Because they've had it completed for months and have been taunting everyone by making them wait...right?
#15 ziadoz on 27 Jan 2007 - 00:52
About time they sorted the horrible name out. The year titles made it sound like some stupid wrestling/football title where they swizz you out of money for the same game with different football kits or something. Good to see the trailer goes back to the roots somewhat too.
#16 +vlsi0n on 28 Jan 2007 - 00:12
I like some others, don't care what it's called. As long as it gets here when they are finished, and hopefully that is soon .

"From the studio who brought you Gears of War..."

Like I give a carrot about GoW, I want to play UT3 because UT is a great series, not because some console game (sure its great but UT came first).

I completely agree with you. However, Gears of War has given Epic Games a recent serge in name recognition and they need to ride on that to help UT3 sells.

Although they could have said, "From the makers of Epic Pinball" and it would have had the same effect on me. (anyone remember that one?.... probably not...most people on this site are youngens).

Funny. I remember playing the demo for Epic Pinball after downloading it off download.com back in 2001. (That was when I was on an old POS Win95 PC.) I remember trying to seek help on the game on their site, epicgames.com, and saw nothing but news about this "Unreal" thing coming together.

Two years later I grabbed a demo of UT2003 and was a bit surprised this game came from the same guys behind EP.

The demo is here. Out of all DOS games this had one of the coolest GUIs.
