Note: This story has now been updated. Gamespot and Bluesnews have both now reported the release date as Fall 2007 and not the Winter.

Thanks to Voodoo Extreme for the scoop and shock.

Electronic Arts, the world's leading interactive entertainment company, and Valve, the award-winning studio behind the blockbuster franchises Half-Life and Counter-Strike, today announced the naming and product configurations The Black Box and The Orange Box, two of the most anticipated action game offerings shipping worldwide in Fall 2007.

The Black Box will ship for the PC, and includes Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. The Orange Box will ship for the PC, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, and Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system, and includes all the content of The Black Box, plus the original Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One.

Innovative games included in The Black Box and The Orange Box include:
  • Half-Life 2: Episode Two -- the second installment in Valve's episodic trilogy advances the award-winning story, leading the player to new locations outside of City 17.
  • Portal -- a pioneering type of single player action game that rewrites the rules for how players approach and manipulate their environment - much like how Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun reinvented the way gamers interact with objects in the game.
  • Team Fortress 2 -- an all-new version of the legendary title that spawned team based multiplayer action games. The game's daring new art style features the most advanced graphics of any Source-based game released to date.

"In less than 18 months, we've shipped 10 new products to retail outlets with EA Partners," said Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve. "The Black Box and The Orange Box represent a new approach to publishing multiple products, on multiple platforms and we know through our experience that no organization in the industry is better equipped to successfully launch new product types on multiple platforms than EA Partners."

"Valve is one of the world's premiere independent developers and EA Partners is thrilled to help them bring the groundbreaking action games in The Orange Box and The Black Box to market as their publishing partner," said David DeMartini, vice president and general manager of EA Partners.

The Black Box and The Orange Box are targeted for release in Fall 2007.

agreed.
surely it was first supposed to be out winter 06? lol.
#1.2 +John. on 07 Feb 2007 - 19:29
Same as you on this one mate. One of the Top 10 games I wanted this year and I have to wait another 9 possibly more months? Not happy.
#1.3 lwebster_2000 on 07 Feb 2007 - 19:44
Problem is in 12 months time Half Life 2 will be looking very dated. Episodes were supposed to be a way of producing more levels quicker for a cheaper price per time. If these things are taking them a year and a half per episode then that kinda beats the point of it doesnt it? By winter 07 a lot less people will buy it than if it was release now
#1.4 DarkGashX on 07 Feb 2007 - 21:04
As the others, I am with you. There has been too many delays for this game.
#1.5 xpgeek on 08 Feb 2007 - 08:52
Agreed. Been waiting so long for this.
#2 IceDogg on 07 Feb 2007 - 17:05
Oh man! well, I guess by then Nvidia will have drivers out for Vista LOL

Winter 2007? There's still 3 months of winter left where I am!! :p

I haven't even played episode 1 yet. What the hell is up with all the delays anyway? I mean, aren't they just creating maps and what not. How long can that possibly take?!?
#3.1 vetLOC on 07 Feb 2007 - 17:38
We are in Winter 06-07 the delay is until Winter 07-08

And I'm sure the delay has to do with the console versions. I can almost promise that one.

if thats the case, why not just release the PC version before the console one? Its not like valve hasn't done that before lol (hence why the console version get all the previous HL game with episode 2 lol)

well its because they have signed contracts with Microsoft and Sony promising to release it all at the same time...

Your only speculating as to why these have been delayed. Even if the main cause was the console releases that does not mean the PC game is complete either and if it was I'm sure Valve would have released it. I doubt they have contracts stating they must be released simultaneously.

If the console ports are involved its likely that in focusing on them development on the PC front was slowed and as such none of the versions are complete.

lol hmm I guess we'll have Black Mesa Source before that now!
#5 El-Diablo on 07 Feb 2007 - 17:22
that's brutal, really really brutal, I was looking forward to TF. This is a big let down.
#6 [X]-bYtE on 07 Feb 2007 - 17:24
Oh.. crap. Yet another delay. Why not add a year to all of your games that you guys announche Valve... it happens everytime. Half Life, Half Life 2, HL2 - Episode 2...

Anyway, looking forward for the next episode. But the wait is killing me
#7 spacer on 07 Feb 2007 - 17:34
With the amount of time valve has taken for Episode 2, they should have just made Episode 2 into a full fledged HL3.

If Episode 2 finally comes out and it's only 6 hours long like Episode 1, we will witness the biggest spike in mental instabality our species has ever seen as HL fans around the world go insane with rage. It'll be like Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later, but with less zombies. It's gonna be great.

I was going to say something very VERY nasty, but I'll just say, It Better Be Worth The Wait.

Agreed!
#10 +Kushan on 07 Feb 2007 - 20:02
Really, who didn't see this one coming?
What worries me is that they're saying Winter 2007 NOW, when it's still Winter 2006! So pretty much they're saying that it's going to take a year from this point, plus all of the time they've had up until now (what is it, 8 months? Something like that) since Episode 1 was released. I thought they said that each episode would come out about 3 months after each other, not 18 months. Kind of defeats the purpose of Episodic content, they may as well have not bothered with Episode 1 and 2 and just made a proper expansion.
#11 virtorio on 07 Feb 2007 - 20:20
Its not like Valve to delay a game. Mind you, I'll take the Ornage Box.
#12 -Hiroshi- on 07 Feb 2007 - 20:38
What the hell? Why delay it so long? Considering that they're using the Source engine, at this rate they might as well create a whole new god damn engine. Seriously now, Valve needs to get off their asses and release a game on time for once in their company's history.
#13 Danrarbc on 07 Feb 2007 - 20:39
So what was that about episodic content speeding up development Valve? Yeah, thought so.
#14 +cheesegoduk on 07 Feb 2007 - 20:53
awww come on, this is pretty damn pathetic anyway you look at it.

By the time they finish it all, they would have been better off doing a fully fledged HL3 as HL2 will look old, tho they can upgrade the source engine more or less all the time.
But considering the whole idea was that we would get content more quickly than waiting for a full game it doesn't really seem to be working.
#15 vetLOC on 07 Feb 2007 - 21:07
Please note guys, I've updated the story with new information from Gamespot and Bluesnews. The release hate has been set for Fall 2007, not Winter.
#16 Jdawg683 on 07 Feb 2007 - 21:58
this is pathetic. basically a year delayed now. and it's not even a full game!
#17 InsaneNutter on 07 Feb 2007 - 22:34
They might aswell just make Half Life 3 i woud sooner have a full game, hopefully UT 3 will be out before then!

Well at least the games should actually work. Which is why i'm glad EA is just the publisher, if they were developing they would hit the milestone see it isn't ready and release it anyway. Then maybe if they aren't too busy working on the sequel release a single update for the game that barely fixes anything (*cough*NFS Carbon*cough*Battlefield 2 and 2142*cough*).

The same thing happened with HL2 and it turned out very well polished at launch, except for a few hiccups that were fixed pretty quickly.
#18.1 +Smigit on 08 Feb 2007 - 04:28
Well HL2 was a full game being built on a new engine. This for all intensive purposes as we know it so far is an expansion pack built on an existing engine. It may have TF2 and Portal but with the way Steam works it would be very easy to link those products to a key so they can get EP2 out first and then when ready give everyone the 2 addons at a later date.

Not trying to be too much of a nit picker, but you just made one of the grammatical errors that ****es me off the most. The phrase you were looking for is "for all intents and purposes"

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_the_saying_&#...e_purposes'

It's a common mistake however. They do sound similar. The difference in meaning, however, is large.

"For all intensive purposes" would mean "for stressing the reason"
"For all intents & purposes" would mean "for all pratical reasons"

Very different meanings

Also while HL2 was built on a new engine so was HL2: Ep1. Also follows that HL2: Ep2 is built on a new one as well. Now you can argue that for Eps 1 & 2 that it's not a completely new engine, but each new game does contain updates to the Source Engine, so it's not just new maps & textures, but new physics and abilities built in to each new part of the game.

Modifying a game engine to do new things isn't as easy as building an engine with that capability in mind. That's why estimates change. It is also why they are called an estimate

*Crying* Nooo Why???? WTF is taking so long? It better be bloody brilliant when it comes out.
#20 +Raa on 07 Feb 2007 - 23:31
It's Valve. That sez it all
#21 Tonttu on 08 Feb 2007 - 05:30
Seems weird that none of you know that they will be adding full (well as full as it can get at the moment >_> ) multi-core CPU support and what-not. That might be the cause of the delay.
#22 Xerxes on 08 Feb 2007 - 06:57
I'm not surprised it got delayed...seems to be the latest trend these days I'll probably get the Orange Box one for the 360 (I've had enough of trying to get the game to work on my PC, which should be able to handle the game maxed out *arg!*)
#23 Aq3e on 08 Feb 2007 - 12:53
How many episodes are actually planned, one for ever year and a half? thats terrible.
#24 qdave on 08 Feb 2007 - 15:40
another 9 months, hmm. just a perfect time to do something else

3 episodes are planned for now. so 2 more left.
#25 RangerLG on 08 Feb 2007 - 18:53
I almost already forgot what the story was about at this point.
#26 Mathachew on 08 Feb 2007 - 20:38
What a sad, sad deal. I was going to get it for my birthday, boom, delayed. Then I said, OO, a good anniversary gift, boom, delayed.

Man this sucks. I want to get my hands on Portal
#27 redFX on 08 Feb 2007 - 21:38
The reason why its taking so long is they are doing a major upgrade to the HL2 engine. They're adding all this new multi-threading system in it and that takes time.

#28 Liquidfox on 09 Feb 2007 - 23:25
Well, hopefully Vista will be sorted by the time this comes out, so i can enjoy it in all it's 64-bit Dual Coring Glory
#29 Wrezal on 12 Feb 2007 - 22:36
