Sony Warns About European PS3 Backwards Compatibility

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said that backwards compatibility with PlayStations 2 games of the PlayStation 3 console, slated to be released in PAL regions in about a month, will not be as good as that of the Japanese and the U.S. versions of the console (which play 98% of old games). “The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models,” a Sony spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters news-agency. It is unclear exactly how many games will be playable on the next generation console. Sony emphasized that the company expects end-users to jump on the PS3 bandwagon in anticipation of improved game titles made exclusively for the new console: “Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3

To make matters worse for European gamers, in PAL regions the machines will retail for up to $240 more than in the U.S. and up to $345 higher compared to the recommended price (₯59 980 or $495) in Japan. Initially Sony will only sell the higher-end PlayStation 3 version of the console (60GB HDD), for €599 ($777) in the most of the markets and for pricing close to that in variety of countries: UK – £425 ($837), Ireland – €629 ($816), Australia – AUD 999.95 ($777), New Zealand – NZ 1199.95 ($840).

I would just like to say a big "Thank you" to Sony for all the delays, the price hike and the reduced functionality for those of us not "lucky" enough to live in one of your golden territories.

I thought about buying one before this new "feature" (which they've sugar-coated with marketing speak), but my arse hurts too much from all the shafting, so I can't sit at my computer long enough to place an order.

LOL.... another wonderful move by Sony to show their customers just how much they care.

Pre-order cancelled.

I'll get one from the US now, once a mod-chip comes out to enable PAL support for BC games. Double the price, 3 months late and a crippled system....

UK – £425... AAAHahaha

LOL - That's not what I'd call good product launch marketing but thanks for the warning, Sony.
I can't wait to see how they'll market this crippled €600 game console in Germany.

I hope everyone knows you can buy a PS3 from www.ebgames.com for $599 (£300) and they will ship (to the UK at least) for $15 (£

Sounds like a bargain to me, now all i need is £308 :-S

Hope this helps

If you have an NTSC tv thats okay, but most of us have a PAL tv at home
#10.2 dan on 26 Feb 2007 - 08:49
I thought if your TV supported 60Hz (and i think alot ow go up to 100Hz, mine does at least) then NTSC would not be an issue

Wow, $1199 in NZ and I got my Xbox 360 for $649. Very glad I didn't wait.

i'm still getting one i'm paying $1,495 nzd ($1,053[ish] USD), in fact i paid for it today. the point that you guys are going nuts over.. its the same issue people had a cry about over the ps2 when they changed it to software backwards from hardware. it won't effect it that much and firmware updates can control them better if issues do arrive. so i have nothing to throw up a fiasco over because simler people think its like 360 with selective backwards compatibility.

Also it's not only PAL, NTSC consoles will follow suite after a while with manufacturing changes.

I think what people are kicking up a fuss about is that PAL regions get screwed over even more than NTSC regions. The price hike was bad enough, but reduced functionality as well? And what has Sony got to say for it? Not even an apology.

They never said it would. Flawed humour.
#12.2 +Digix on 27 Feb 2007 - 00:05
Yea, try going to local hardware store, buy a brick. You may have better chance with that.

man first Vista is overpriced and now the PS3. Looks like Europe will be Wii/Linux supporters at this rate
