In January, when Electronic Gaming Monthly noted that PS3s were rather easy to come by, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton famously responded that he’ll pay $1,200 for every PlayStation 3 "in North America that's been on shelves for more than a few minutes". In one hour, Penny Arcade found 11 consoles, amounting to $13,200. It is still unclear whether Gabe and Tycho have received their check from Tretton. And now, according to Tretton, there is a shortage of PS3s in the United States and the gaming company aims to solve the problem by shipping 2 million PS3s to North America by the end of next month and will hit its stride by May. Despite Tretton's claims, many stores across the U.S. appear to have a surplus of PS3s. On the other hand, there is a complete lack of Nintendo Wiis. Maybe Tretton mixed up which company he’s representing?
"April or May is when we feel like we're going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there. It's a testament to the fact that we've been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console. Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves. If we have empty shelves, that's one less consumer who could have bought a PlayStation 3," said Tretton.

You just have to be sure there's a demand or market for your initial product release numbers (and it's price in Sony's case) or you look rather silly trying to do it. Someone in Sony marketing needs to tell Tretton that marketing pitch has failed and he needs to move on to a different one, lol. A price cut sounds a good one.
and they think making up news stories about shortages will make it seem like the PS3 is really popular...

the wii? The wii shortage has nothing to do with them releasing a small amount to teast people. Nintendo does not play those games and they never really have.
The wii is outselling everything out there. its already broken the original ps2 sales record.
I am the proud owner of a xbox 360 (some great games, and xbox live can't be beat)
I am the sad owner of a PS3 (right now all I play is flow...because everything else out is rubbish or is on 360 and includes better multiplayer, but hey atleast I have a blu ray player and the hope that good games come out)
And as of last night I am the greatful owner of a Wii...games are simply but fun and I've always loved the TG-16 so being able to replay games like military madness is just icing on the cake.
So I currently own every major current system and the only one im unhappy with is the ps3. Sony needs to stop talking their BS about there being shortages and start focusing on getting some actual content out to the system. There isn't a single PS3 game that i've "HAD" to play..and you know what I mean...when you see a game and you just say "wow I want that"
Right now the only "wow" game im looking forward to on ps3 is "Lair" and my hopes for that go down with every new article stating that the game while beautiful is anything but smooth...if I want laggy graphics i'll play games on my PC thanks. I don't buy a console and expect the games to have large framerate drops....its one of the things that drove me away from playing Saints Row on my x360..fun game, poorly programmed as demonstrated by the amount of lag one can experience during heavy battle scenes...if GoW and Crackdown don't lag I sure as hell don't expect a game of lower graphical quality too.
So enough about shortages sony...the only shortage you have is game titles that people want to actually purchase...and side from flow your online offerings are pathetic as well.
exactly.
Consumers aren't buying the ones that are available now!
i wouldn't say they are gathering dust. the ps3s sell there's no doubt about that, just very very slowly compared to the other 2. and to the first poster, the stock situation is not a lie, you really can find a ps3 anywhere now.
I wasn't denying anything obviously. I was just looking at the big picture, that's how dynamic the market is. Some get more than others and others get theres a lot quicker than others. That's all I'm saying.
Nobody is buying them, plain and simple truth that some people don't want to hear or believe even when the truth is right here smacking them in the face.
Look at how Penny Arcade found 11 within an hour. They probably only visited one or two places. Go out and look around for a few hours at different places. You'll find more PS3's sitting on shelves collecting dust than you'll find Wii's or 360's.
Wii's and 360's are selling more than the PS3 because that's what the people want, plain and simple. Sony has screwed themselves with the PS3 and they know it.
All Jack did was make himself and Sony look like the biggest asses.
I think this is SOny's way of getting people to buy them.. when the people try to turn them in.. he'll go like this "I never said that"
obviously there is a Wii shortage, and that *is* hurting their "better than PS3 sales" some.
I was worried that wasn't going to be able to buy 20 PS3s.
Wait a minute. I don't even want one.
Nevermind.
Wow, is Sony ever delusional.
Tomorrow they're going to tell us that the PS3 will play Blu-ray movies

They didn't mean "shortages", they meant "shortcomings"!.
Still lying bastards, though.
Now a Wii on the other hand, is nowhere.
