Kotaku.com caused a stir after receiving a rumour about a Playstation feature to be announced at GDC next week. PlayStation Home as they were informed would be “Sony's blending of achievements and Miis”.

Their source went on to describe the Playstation Home, “Basically, you get to make an avatar for your console (like a Mii) and this avatar has a room. As you play games and accomplish certain tasks, you will receive items with which to adorn the room that are specific to the game (achievements). The kicker is that this is going to be a new requirement for every PS3 game.”

Kotaku delved deeper looking at keynotes from last years GDC, where Sony said, “So we move from product based to service based, starting with packaged product augmented by downloadable content. We'll enhance this with social networks, the MySpace experience, this will be a key part of the PlayStation3 going forward. What brings it to life is the voice chat, the text chat, the video, the social features we're building in for the future.”

At this point Sony cut loose all ties with Kotaku, for a day, but even more information has now been revealed. NeoGaf did their own research, and found a trademark filed by Sony, called Playstion Home.

All in all, it looks like Sony’s keynote at GDC next week has got a lot of people excited.

so let me get this straight, sony thinks a key role in the playstation 3 going forward is to incorporate a gamerpoints reward system except with a tamagotchi-esque 'build your own doll house' feel. or did i read that wrong. It looks like the more games you play, the more you get to decorate your virtual house.... .... a lot of people are excited by this?

sounds like something kids or certain Asian markets may enjoy anyway.

*sorry for the stereotyping, just based on many other fads those regions get into such as pokemon and tomagochi ect.

It is extremely smart. With the popularity of Second Life exploding, Sony had the right idea on making a similar system to cash in on.

I think it sounds cool...And I love the achievements on 360. It gives the games a longer replay value (the good ones anyway)

That's only cool for people who don't have the slightest trace of a real life. =|

"The kicker is that this is going to be a new requirement for every PS3 game.”

Oh joy, yet another reason to pursuade developers not to make games for the PS3.

Its funny that Sony and other companies are calling Nintendos wii stuff a gimmik but yet they incorporate those GImmicks into there own console.

Well said... And the funny thing is they aren't even trying to be subtle about it anymore... it's pretty much a blatant (oh we're getting our ass handed to us by the wii let's copy all of the corny stuff from it that we can't be sued for and try to get extra sales... It IS To Laugh...
