According to a Tuesday Nielsen/NetRatings report, traffic to the PlayStation Web site fell in February, while rivals Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii posted double-digit growth. Compared to last year’s February, visits to Playstation.com fell 8% to 1 million unique visitors, while traffic to Nintendo.com soared by 91% to 1.6 million visitors and Xbox.com traffic rose by 47% to 1.2 million visitors.

Nintendo has reported strong sales for its Wii console, a reflection that the company's strategy of targeting average consumers instead of hardcore gamers is working. Sony, on the other hand, got off to a bad start with the PS3 after a component shortage delayed shipments. The company, however, appears to be back on track and says it expects to ship 6 million units by the end of the month. While the PlayStation packs far more computing power than the Wii, the cost of the machine is about twice as much, making it more of a device for hardcore gamers.

And after that they can shut down the PS3 production and use it for something else. that stock ought to last them untill 2010 at least.

"bad start with the PS3 after a component shortage delayed shipments" that doesnt explain why you can get a system or even 10 in almost every store out there right now.. heck even since christmas basically

Sony is living in the past. They will realize it sooner or later. How will increasing supply help, when there is already supply in the channel is beyond me.

I beg to differ. The only thing keeping the PS3 back is its lack of games. Sooner than later, as they games start releasing, its full speed ahead, then you guys are going to have to find something else to nit-pick about.

As far as this Wii thing goes, out of the 3 consoles, this one is gathering the most dust for me. After Zelda, theres absolutely nothing of interest here that I can't go out and get for any of the other 2 consoles.

Why is this gamer news worthy?

This is incorrect. Alexa shows Sony over 500 ranks higher traffic wise than Nintendo. My god, the Nintendo fanboys are looking for new ways to defend their good-looking-cardboard-box console. And according to Alexa, Microsoft traffic is eons higher than either.

Alexa is very inaccurate. You have to realize that its stats are based on every million people who use the Alexa toolbar. After the big PR hit from the Alexa variant being included with Windows XP it is hard to believe that there are a million people using the Alexa toolbar.

Regardless, the Nielsen Netratings are the ones you want to pay attention to. I would have to guess that these numbers are from Nielsen.
