I apologize in advance for the delay of this news post; Todd (LOC) is currently having technical difficulties, so he can’t give you his usual take on what’s happening in the gaming world. Microsoft has yet to confirm anything, so we have to keep this under the unconfirmed category, although the abundance of stories regarding a black 360 is beginning to become overwhelming. Currently, Microsoft would be perfectly happy to have you believe that the pictures all over the Internet are simply ideas that are being toyed with internally at Redmond, especially if you just bought a white version and are considering returning it.

It’s been rumoured again and again, but this time, the black Xbox 360 seems to be coming, and sooner than you might expect. If I wanted to use keywords for everything Kotaku told us about what's in the latest Game Informer magazine, it would go something like: Black Xbox 360, April 2007, 120GB HDD, HDMI output and cable, no HD DVD, $479 USD. Matt Helgeson, senior editor over at Game Informer, insists they don't post fake news stories in their April magazine. So Kotaku believes it’s true. Now, let’s see what Engadget has confirmed with its sources. It will be dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite, will only be available in limited quantities, with new packaging. The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs and eventually (expected late summer or fall) Elite hardware (in white plastics) will replace the Xbox Premium. Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips. There are no current plans to integrate WiFi (although that can always change).

HDMI output and cable

What doe the cable part mean? Something to do with cable TV?
Is this the fruits of the DirectTV agreement announced last year?

HDMI output and HDMI cable

I think it means it will come with an HDMI cable, as opposed to the PS3 which does not

20 gigs is plenty. HDMI is not that important. Blah.

All i have on my console is Final Fantasy XI and a Gears of War save file and I have 6GB left. thats like ONE HD movie, or ONE demo! 20GB is not enough! Not even close. Maybe 500GB if microsoft really wana make XBL the new iTunes

Agreed. 20gb is not plenty. Whats the point of a video on demand service if you cant fit more than 1 video on your hard drive? Add to that the demo games weighing in at 500mb to a gig, and then the Halo 3 beta which is rumoured to be over a gig. No, 20 gig is no where near enough.

Can I smell early adopters regretting their purchase?

Yep. There's already forum postings around here where they're crying about it.

No biggy, 20 GIG = Big enough.

Color = Big deal? // You can get your skins if you really want.

HDMI = I'm quite satisified w/ the end results as is.

In regards of more USERS getting 360 of this, SURE BRING ON THE PARTY!

The 120 GB HDD is a little surprising; I thought they'd put an 80 GB in it. Still not gonna get one, but at least they're keeping up with the tech.
I agree with the above posters: 20 GB is way to small. I don't think anyone still makes 20 GB HDDs.

It's the middle of March. Nice try, you're only off by about a month and a half.

I wonder how many people will forget the problems people had with the first batch of 360's and run out and buy the first batch of this new model...
#8.1 MightyJordan on 21 Mar 2007 - 10:42
That was early days, back then. Microsoft have learned their lesson now and corrected the faults found in the original 360. They sorted the problems back with the July 2006 models and so on, so the black ones will be just as easy. I'm still waiting for the update that Microsoft is supposed to be releasing to make the DVD drive run quieter.

All I want to know is whether it will upconvert SD dvd's with the HD-DVD addon. It will NOT over component and my Plasma will only do 1024X768 over VGA. SO, no upconvert joy for me yet. If this will work over HDMI, then I am there.

I'm still waiting for the $100 price drop. :?
