An upcoming system update to bring the PlayStation 3 firmware to version 1.6 will give users the ability to download files from the PlayStation Network in the background. Currently, PlayStation 3 owners must halt all activity in order to download content: any attempt at another operation on the console will cancel the download, which is non-resumable. Needless to say, users will greatly appreciate this new feature which seems like it should have been available right from the start.

Another recently announced feature to be included in the 1.60 update is the introduction of Folding@home functionality, giving owners of a PS3 the opportunity to use their new game system to help find real-life cures to diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and many cancers. Version 1.60 will improve Web browsing by allowing zooming and new resolution settings for easier surfing, plus a full-sized keyboard on-screen for more convenient text entry. Sony is also adding a software feature so that the WiFi-less PS3 variant will be able to connect with the PSP for Remote Play. The timing of the new firmware closely coincides with the launch of the European launch of PS3.

lol nice to see how much of a Beta console the PS3 is and how in the last 6-8 months how many ideas they are ripping off the X360 and Wii in a bid to make a $600 console easier to swallow.

Meh, in my opinion they're giving us what we want so why the f--k should someone complain? God forbid they could add features that have become the standard in the next generation consoles. Hell, I could care less if Wii or 360 copied each other for that matter. So long as they're providing more content, I see little reason to be upset.

Don't forget that you cannot download while playing a game or watching a movie. The PS3's just not powerful enough to handle both...

Yes you can. Confirmed on IGN.

"We've received word from Sony that you will indeed be able to play games while downloading content in the background. Similar to how downloads on the Xbox 360 works, you'll be able to play games offline while downloads work in the background, and if you hop online your queue will simply pause until you disconnect."

Yeah these new features make it so worth spending $600+ (after taxes). Gee, let me rush out and buy a system right now and have it sit around doing nothing. The only games I'm interested in don't come out till DEC of this year....lol.

Nice. I didn't know MGS4 was coming this early. I'll still only get a PS3 if I win one in a competition, or I really really love it, which probably won't happen.

This is good news. But where's the darned DVD upscaling? I want to trash my old DVD player. PS3 is great for blu-ray, but, 480i DVDs??!
