Heads up on Future Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Update

Those with Xbox 360 HD DVD players who bought the recently released Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time concert disc were let down with the poor performance of the audio caused by a bug in Microsoft’s decoding software. The NIN disc features a Dolby TrueHD lossless audio track, which promises excellent aural quality for those with the appropriate surround setup but the HD DVD add-on is incapable of outputting a TrueHD signal and instead it downsamples the lossless stream into a lossy 640kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. To make matters worse, playing the disc on with TrueHD results in “static popping” and “clipping” noises.

A Microsoft employee confirmed that the Xbox 360 HD DVD team was aware of the bug and will be addressing it in an upcoming software update. Based on what he had heard from the Xbox team he stated: “We plan on shipping an update to the Xbox 360 HD DVD player in early to mid spring. In this update we will be adding DTS output, improved Audio, and improved title compatibility. The variability there is that this is a software project and we are fixing/enhancing a lot of things and we want to make sure we get them right. So it is difficult to give an exact day for the update.”

Good to here that x360 is finally getting DTS...why it didn't have it since day 1 is a mystery.
And the fix for truHD downsampling will be good too, too bad they can't support TrueHD with HDMI 1.2 but maybe in an xbox360 1337!!11 edition they will

will this be a firmware update or just software? software install on the 360? firmware update? i'd like to install this since i use it on my PC.

If you use it on your PC then this update is meaningless. The update is for the xbox360's HDDVD software.
Asking if this update will help is like expecting a firmware update on you DVD disc drive to improve PowerDVD's features.

and acting like a douche in response to a question is meaningless.

i dont see how this couldnt be a firmware update, even if it is only a software update for the 360.

The HDDVD hardware you plug into your PC isn't actually part of the 360.. let alone some how in it's firmware. Shall I change my analogy so you can understand it better?

"Asking if this update will help is like expecting a windows update you installed; to follow your DVD rom drive; if you took that disc drive out and put it in another PC"

The HDDVD drive is a 'plug and play' USB2 device... shall I go on?

How was I "acting like a douche"? I was trying to explain something to you in the shortest post I could be bothered to type. There is no need for you to be rude, I was just answering your question.

I hope this update does something about the 'Children Of Men' hddvd playback issue. That is, if it's the actual player that's causing problems and not simply a bad batch of dvds.

It's not an issue, it's "THE LOOK AND SOUND OF PERFECT"

Amir on AVS has been promising this update since the unit shipped in November.

The Doom9 hack, the AACS key issue, the new titles not playing properly all add up to further delays.

Nor will the Elite's HDMI output allow for PCM conversion for lossless 5.1 soundtracks.

People harp on the competition being more expensive, but in no way is audio or video playback crippled.
