Over the recent months, there has been much discussion in the media about what type of negative impact video games have on young gamers, but the average gamer has voiced their opinion too. It can be generally stated that they we believe: “If a game can do that to you, there was something wrong with you before you started playing.” And now, we can back it up. Here it is, the study you’ve all been waiting for. Go shove it in your most hated politician’s face.

A study published in Psychology, Crime & Law claims that stable personalities are unaffected by violent video games. Researchers had 110 boys and 15 girls, with a mean age of 14.6, play Quake II for 20 minutes once researchers had a personality profile of each participant. Anger levels were measured again immediately after the gaming test session ended. Researchers discovered three distinct groups once analyzing the data: 77 maintained the same anger level, 22 had anger levels that doubled, 8 started out a higher level of anger before the test started but dropped down to normal levels. There are two groups that gamers from the studied fell into. The first group is calm at the beginning and becomes agitated after the game and the other group is composed of angry gamers who cool off after game play. The authors of the report say they understand that any correlation between aggression and anger remains very unclear to researchers, and the next step is to run the tests over with different subjects and different video games.

Study: Certain studies have a high degree of obviousness.

lmao, right? God, I hate seeing a study come up that says what we already know to be true. On top of that, it comes out like it's "news" to everyone. -yawn-

#5 Kreuger on 07 Apr 2007 - 14:46
I would've thought that was rather obvious too

Now the problem is every parent believes their child is stable.
#7 +warwagon on 07 Apr 2007 - 17:41
Ya think!!!?!?!?!?!?!

The problem is deeper; Today's youngsters are practically raised in a such environment that they spend over 90% of their free time by playing mostly violent games. But this is not game publisher's fault, this is a society and parent's fault for not giving their kids enugh of healty entertainment alternatives.

indeed, that is the major problem. most parents think their kids would never do horrible things, because if they admit it then they'd have to admit that they were horrible parents

90%? way to pull a number out of your ass. when talking about "today's youngsters" it's not even close to that. what your doing is the same as the politicians
#8.2 buletov on 08 Apr 2007 - 02:19
Jesus, it's not about numbers or politics... BTW the number I 'made up' was the percentage of the group of the kids in question by my personal opinion. How can you say what am I 'doing' after I make my first post, you infantil prick. You know nothing about me. My point is that everyone is ranting how games are bad for kids, while at the same time they provide them no alternative fun that is as rich in possibilities as the games in question.

Having an unstable child may not always be a "bad parenting" factor. There are other factors outside the home that can affect children and the way they think. (e.g. school)

Don't like your percentage given there, but you're right. However, you can't protect your children from learning about the every day violence, death, and other horrible things that go wrong in our society.

This must be your first time using the internet, correct? Seriously though, don't get all worked up over nothing.

Yes, it's my first time.... no, that post might be a culmination of some other frustrations of mine.
#9 obsolete_power on 07 Apr 2007 - 21:13
I agree with this because crime only influences criminal personalities and this is the same idea.
#10 Samboini on 07 Apr 2007 - 23:08
If I lose/die whatever when playing, whether it be online or between friends sure I get vented up in a "I hate losing way" but it doesn't mean I punch my bird in the face. Give it two minutes and i'm walking the dog or something infinitely more boring. I'm glad people will start to realise shooting someone in a game does not turn you into an axe-wielding blood thristy maniac intent on nothing but killing.
#11 Croquant on 08 Apr 2007 - 03:54
Aren't all young people inherently unstable? Isn't that why we don't let them drive cars, vote, or join the army?
#12 virtorio on 08 Apr 2007 - 03:57
No sh*t, Finally a study on this topic stating the totally obvious
#13 remix17 on 08 Apr 2007 - 04:48
Well no sh*t. I've been saying this all along.

Again, not suprised by another video game study.

When a video game becomes your child's rolemodel, you are a bad parent.
#14.1 +Dakkaroth on 08 Apr 2007 - 17:33
Again, not always the "bad parent(ing)" idea.
#15 chulomixed on 08 Apr 2007 - 06:22
Guys, of course it's obvious to us. But, this study and report is needed for those who it's NOT obvious too, which is all these stupid lawyers, politicians, mayors (like NYC Bloomberg regarding GTA 4), and anyone else who can't seem to understand that a game doesn't make ppl go out and commit crimes, well for most ppl.

#17.1 +Dakkaroth on 08 Apr 2007 - 17:38
I get mad when I get killed by someone I can't stand more than twice.

Then I get a soda (caffeine) and ride their ass for the rest of the map.
#18 +stifler6478 on 08 Apr 2007 - 18:23
For those who say this was obvious, sure, it may seem that way, but it was also obvious for quite a while that the Earth was the center of the universe. We all know how that went

It takes empirical data and scientific research to back a theory no matter how obvious that theory may be. It's about time we finally have some solid backing for this one.

I would be angry too if I were forced to play Quake II...

Couldn't they choose something that wasn't released last millenium?

there are two group of gamers (fps):

n00bs - they whine all the time and get angry

pr0s - they enjoy killing n00bs
