Today developer Turbine (Asheron's Call) and Midway announced the release of The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar. The game is the first massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkein and has been in development for four years.

To celebrate the release Turbine also announced the first update for the game, The Shores of Evendim, to be available in June. Shores will include new areas to explore, over 60 new quests, the Battle for Helegrod raid, nine new monsters, and major enhancements to the music system.

LOTR Online is now available at your local game shop in standard and special editions. The Special Edition includes the game, 30 days of free play, a "Making of The Lord of the Rings Online" DVD, the official game soundtrack, and an exclusive in-game item, all for $59.99. The standard edition will set you back $49.99.

Or get a lifetime subscription for £99.99/€147/USD$200.

Man... me and my girlfriend enlisted ourselves in the beta right on the day before of its end. Never got a chance to play.

No point converting it as it's only avalible to North-American pre-orders and if it was other areas it probably wouldn't be a straight conversion just like the monthly costs never are.

Nope, I was posting the european rate for a lifetime subscription, since our pre-orders are up as well. The USD is there to inform how much is it in USD.

Save your money. I was on the closed and open betas for this game. If you've ever played a decent MMO (Everquest, WoW, etc.), then you'll find nothing new in this game. The combat mechanics, crafting, even the spells, are pretty much bog-standard for an MMO.

You might enjoy it for a month if you're a LotR nut, or if you've never played an MMO before. But, you'll soon realize that this is the very definition of a "grind" MMO.

LOL not even close, the game is way ahead of WOW, SWG, etc.

I was a closed beta, open beta, and now lifetime subscriber. This is the MMO people have been waiting for.

GRIND? not even. Questing is the way to go to advance, not mindless mob killing, rinse, repeat. and the storylines are deep and involved.

I won't even get into the graphics..... which are, in my opinion, the very best EVER in an MMO.

Of course, this is all my opinion,
