Microsoft: “Absolutely No Plans” for Blu-Ray

Microsoft have finally laid rest to rumours suggesting a Blu-ray add on may be coming to the 360. Rumours began back in January when Peter Moore suggested in an interview that Microsoft would be willing to adapt to consumers needs. Coupled with that remark, and flagging sales of the HD-DVD format it would seem the simple solution to add a choice of Blu-ray.

“We firmly stand behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for consumers. Current reports indicating that Microsoft has a back-up plan which includes Blu-ray support are incorrect,” detailed the company.

I might suggest that Microsoft start looking into a backup plan if Blu-ray sales continue to outsell HD-DVD 3 to 1.

uh huh. Just like Microsoft had "Absolutely no plans" to release an updated xbox 360 model even after photos of it was leaked.
Of course they won't comfirm anything like this because it would damage sales of the current unit

It will still be an external unit. I don't think confirming or denying will have any effect on existing sales.
#1.2 skase on 17 May 2007 - 22:39
I think it would damage the companies/consumers confidence of the format

It will for the HD-DVD unit for 360. Microsoft is still pushing to sell them.

If you look at Amazon's sales rank for items which are available on all fomats.

DVD > HD-DVD > Blur-ray.
(Take For 'Planet Earth' for example)

The 3:1 figures quoted here appears to be from the few days after Sony just released their popular movie on only Blu-ray.

ahhell,

you're true,

Blu-Ray have a significant out sales then HD-DVD in Hong Kong...

HD-DVD in here were just lack of people who are willing to buy ...

Does it really matter? Microsoft are hardly going to confirm rumours that they will do a Blu-ray drive or not, cos it's just that, a rumour. It's amazing how people jump on other people's words and report it as fact. Yes, of course they might do one, but clearly it's not in their plans right now.
#3.1 Dakkaroth on 18 May 2007 - 20:24
Apparently you don't pay attention to Microsoft.

It's just like how Bush will come out and say,"We have no plans on changing our staff," and next week, Donald Rumsfeld is fired.

3-1? Maybe, but does that look insurmountable to you?

It looks pitiful to me.

Blu-Ray seems to have more studio support, but I don't care either way...I won't buy Blu-Ray.

I'd be surprised if it was correctly counted as far as hybrid discs also.

surely MS have said themselves that if HD-DVD flops then a Blu-ray add on is a possibility?

Although that was probably just having a little dig at the PS3, just showing that it doesn't matter which format wins, an add on could be possible for the 360 (even if MS don't intend to make one)
#5.1 Xerxes on 21 May 2007 - 06:58
I'm pretty sure they did say that, by making the HD-DVD drive non-standard it does allow for more flexibility. I think MS are just saying they have no plan for a Blu-Ray Addon (yet) cause if they did, they'd be admitting HD-DVD is losing (which it is actually I believe?) and that could hurt sales of the HD-DVD addon and possibly the 360 as well (as some people may get a PS3 instead because of Blu-Ray)

So I'd say they will continue to push HD-DVD till such a point that it's obvious that it lost, then they will release a Blu-Ray addon I suspect. Of cause this is purely speculation and is only what I think

blu-ray drives run $1000 and hd-dvd drives run $250. If ms put out an external blu-ray drive for $1000 everyone would say screw ms making us pay that amount after paying for a console. so why does anyone care if ms puts one out or not.

Blu-Ray drives are more like $299 not $1000 - http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2189190/...prices-drop-299

Thats $299 for just the darn drive! if you want a home system it will cost a LOT more... as you need a computer to run it still, and all the BD-ROM players out there are basically just computers normal pentium 4 computers.. thats why they cost about $1000 at release, droped slighly since then but still way up there

Who said anything about home systems? I was replying to the previous poster claiming that HD-DVD 'drives' are $250 whereas Blu-Ray 'drives' are $1000 which is a long way from the truth.

I wonder how long it'll take for either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD to really be the standard.
#8 jstillion on 17 May 2007 - 19:28
If Blue-Ray became a standard, MS would seriously consider putting it out.

In the console wars / HD wars, PR reps are more likely to say "X will or X will NOT happen, you can count on that" and then do an 180 to get any advatage.

If Blue-ray became a "clear" winner, I would see an add-on, if it's still not clear who would win, I expect MS to hold out and not do one.
#9 hobbsy on 18 May 2007 - 01:42
Blu-ray must become the standard as its the most advance.. they should just start making it all quicker and dropping prices quicker so everything can speed up.
#10 Croquant on 18 May 2007 - 04:02
In other news, I now have absolutely no plans to buy a Xbox until I can get one with a blu-ray drive.
#11 micropain on 18 May 2007 - 06:06
By the time either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD actually become a de facto standard, MS will be prepping their follow-up to the 360 and an add-on won't be on the drawing board.
(2 replies) #12 gadean on 18 May 2007 - 15:07
Blu-ray has most of its sales at the moment because of the PS3. Past that, HD-DVD is the clear "winner" in this battle. Having lower prices is not a concept that Sony believes in.
#12.1 Dakkaroth on 18 May 2007 - 20:36
I believe the technology behind Blu-ray is MUCH better than HD-DVD, especially as they are still researching a lot of things to improve Blu-ray (10x write speed anyone?). That said, sure it'll cost more at the beginning. Everything does, but give it time. Remember when VCRs were the price of Blu-ray players? It's the same damn thing.

The only thing HD-DVD has going for it is convenience. Sure, it's convenient. But with faster download speeds coming, faster disc-write speeds, bigger hard drives, and all that great technology on the way, Blu-ray will clearly come out on top as prices drop (unless better technology is to become available).

Cheap discs with no room to improve are only going to go so far.

And for the record, I back great technology, not companies. If you love/hate a company, that's good for you. Just don't let it blind you from the great things to come.

Dakkaroh,
I do agree with you ! Technology rulez !

There are various Blu-Ray burner on the market in Hong Kong, it really ease my backup experience !

TDK is researching a Blu-Ray with 8 layer over 200GB per disk...
As the development is going on, simply HD-DVD will be just ruled out finally!

Moreover, HD-DVD movie are out of luck, seems lack of customer base in here, customer wants Blu-Ray right here.
