The PlayStation 3 sales declined by almost 50,000 units between March and April. Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, attributed the poor results “to a lack of new software in the market," pointing to games like Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as heavy hitters meant to spur sales in 2007. May doesn’t look any better: there are only two May PS3 games: Surf's Up and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Both are multi-platform releases. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told the Reuters news service a price drop was in order: "For sure Sony will have a different market share ... lower than before. They have to decrease the price quite significantly." Will Sony listen?

I like to think of the PS3 as being the Sleeping Giant, waiting for that one thing to come along and awake it from its slumber.
Won't be long, soon as Home, Lil Big Planet, and blah blah comes long to spark the fuse.

What gives a game producer, that isn't already committed to a PS3 exclusive, any incentive to develop for the PS3 over the XBox 360 or Wii? If I were making a game I would want to target the system that is in the most homes.
Man, i should apply for a job @ sony.
Also losing some exclusive titles hurt.
Are you insinuating that the PS2 is ghetto?
Motorstorm is nothing more than an extended demo. (try the demo for free. saves you a lot of money.)
Oblivion, most people already had an other version (PC, Xbox360)
All the great games are planned for Q3/Q4 release.
With all the development struggles, Q4 release dates are more likely.
My guess is that too many games will be unleashed on the public in that Quarter, so it will hurt sales even more. (not being able to afford every great game, people will choose.)
And what also hurt sales was the poor execution of the multi platform titles (FEAR, Splinter Cell) most games where much better executed on other platforms.
I second that. Not only is it bad for consoles, it has turned PC gaming to crap as well. PCs are capable of much more than they're giving us because of console port limitations.
PS3 offers what? Blu-Ray? Could care less about HD movies. I'm perfectly happy with DVD's. Home seems like an overly complicated way to do it and I much prefer the simple approach of Live. Plus, if I want to play The Sims, I will play The Sims. And I must say The Sims is boring as hell. Other than a couple of exclusives, the PS3 offers nothing all that interesting over the 360. Especially for $600, and especially when those exclusives could very well come to the 360 at some point anyway. Over all, the PS3 is just one big "meh".
Another reason is the on-going format war; the longer it takes for HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray to settle, the longer PS3 will be stifled. And of course the longer PS3 sale suffers, the longer it will take for the format war.

if i'm not mistaken, wasn't the PlayStation 1 out almost TWO YEARS before a Final Fantasy showed up on it???

FFVII came out September 7, 1997 in the US (PS1 released 1995). So you are correct, PS1 also didn't have a Final Fantasy in it's first year.
FFX was a little bit quicker in coming to PS2, it arrived in late in 2001 - a year after PS2 launch.
yes yes you can
that like saying you can blame wonder for lack of bread
ps
since they make games themelves they should have had made more for release's in-house/1/2 part games
Sony chose to put in a Blu-ray drive and a Cell processor in their PS3. Not only did these components make it significantly harder to develop games for, but it also drove up the price of the console considerably. A higher price means less consumer support, and that equates to lower motivation for developers.
Harder work + Less expected return on investment = Less games for PS3.
So yes, you can blame Sony for lack of games.
Doesn't matter how many great games come out if you can't afford the system or believe it's to expensive.
If they did not rely on limited software instead of hardware emulation for old PS games it would be way more worthwhile, too.
now i can finally afford a ps3..and gta4 and mgs4..woohoo!
But, to be fair...it wasn't until a full year after the release of XBox 360 that their started to be worthwhile titles. When I first picked up my 360 back in April last year, I had only 1 game throughout the entire summer, DOA4. Since November of last year my collection has grown to 12 games (although some were dumb purchases..ahem... Dead or Alive Extreme 2
crappy games don't matter if the console they're running on isn't worth half its pricetag.
The first game on the radar blip that also drives me to even consider a PS3 is FF XIII.... which is December.
As a result I know own a DS Lite and a Nintendo Wii and LOVE it.
I also own 120+ PsOne/PsTwo games by the time Sony does a price drop goes to the software ps1/2 emulation model in the US and hints there "moving forward" aka tough break if it does work.... given all of the above it makes me seriously consider if Final Fantasy XIII is even worth it.
FF has not had a dud really but "lucky" number 13 may do it... and may not even be square enix fault.
PS3 may do well in the future... but it's running razor thin on drop off before the game support is there.
