Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison has boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012. So far, over 2.5 million Wiis have been sold; monthly Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months. Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated. A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said. While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.

I think that's a pretty strong claim, especially since Harrison is saying that 35 million units will be sold in the US alone -- I wonder how many he believes will sell globally by 2012...

If that happens I will be amazed. Sure it has taken off well, but as of yet it is not as widespread as AIDS.

i think nintendo should be busy focusing on the NOW and worry about their current supply shortages, and their future games.

rather stupid for a company to make a comment like that.

.

They make over a million Wiis a month. It's not like they're churning out 5 a week in Iwata's garage.

why does it say "over 2.5 million" Wiis have been sold? is that US only? reports have been coming in for a while that Wii has surpassed the 7 million mark, quickly closing in on the 360's 10 million mark.

As much of a shock as this may be to you, the U.S. is NOT the entire world.

you idiot, he was clearly asking if that quote was US only or the entire world.

anyway, It seems a little low of number, and since it is a quote from Nintendo of America I would assume its just a US sales number.

the 7 million is worldwide i think. anyway i'm happy abou ttheir position on hardware upgrades. the system doesn't need a hardware upgrade if you ask me. Nintendo made things simple and made only one system for everyone and not a "Normal => Extreme => Eleet.

if i knew all my Virtual Console purchases would carry over, i would gladly pay up to $50 extra for a Wii that could play DVD movies just by popping a disc in (and not having to power it up first, navigate menus with the Wiimote, etc)

my PS2 has been my only DVD player for years. i just pop any disc in and it goes.

of course, a Wii with 1 Gig, 2 Gigs, etc of internal storage would make sense as well. Nintendo could get around that by having the core software updated to take better advantage of the SD slot (ie, play VC downloads direct from the SD card). hell, a core software update that would allow it to directly access USB storage would be even better. anything from a 1 Gig thumbdrive to a 500 gig hard drive would be usable then.

in other words, there are plain advantages to them having some sort of "major" update to the Wii. it wouldnt change core gameplay, but adding better support for mass storage would help with everything else a lot, and adding DVD playback support would also help it out.

I don't think having 3 Xbox SKUs is confusing. I think some people would actually like a Wiicked edition or something.

OS X comes in one style, but that doesn't make it sell more IMO.

heh not a bad number if it turns out to be true

So Nintendo expects to be consistently selling at the same rate as they have been, for the next 4 or 5 years? Yeah, thats a logical assumption...

Well yesterday I found a 5 dollar bill in the parking lot. Therefore by this time 2012, I expect find $9,125 worth of 5 dollar bills. Anyone else see how ridiculous such an assumption is?

Yes, your analogy is ridiculous.

Yes, your analogy is ridiculous.

You're abosolutely right. It is ridiculous. But so is Nintendo saying, "Oh we sold 2.5 million in the first few months the Wii has been out, therefore, We're going to sell 35 million by 2012."

Nintendo's forecast might be overly optimistic, but your example is other worldly ...

It's fine if you want to exaggerate a little to make a point, but at least try to stay in the ball park with the analogy.

It's not exactly far-fetched either. Sure sales for a normal month will probably drop. But holiday sales will be huge for this system.

I don't see how 35 million is impossible. But they definitely have to keep things going and looking up to do it.

The Wii does not exist. Have you ever seen one for sale, or even a demo unit in a store? Neither have I.

Still haven't seen one f--king game that makes me want it. Til then, no point in buying. :/
#15 Xenomorph on 25 May 2007 - 11:41
my wife's cousin just got a Wii.... and she is now trying to sell it for $300.

she finally found one, and bought it... but she doesn't even WANT it.

i don't know which is worse. her taking it off the shelf, preventing someone who wanted it from actually buying it - or the fact that she doesn't want to keep it and play it herself!
