According to Enterbrain, a Japanese publisher that tracks console sales, Nintendo's Wii console outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 in Japan last month by six to one: 270,974 Wii consoles to 41,628 PS3s. Can it get worse? Yeah: only about 17,616 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in June. Nintendo has sold about 2.76m Wii consoles in Japan since the launch last December, while Sony has sold 970,270 PS3s since it debuted last November.
Last week, Phil Harrison, PlayStation's head of worldwide studios, told US Game Informer magazine that pundits should not judge the success of the console based on the launch software line-up. PlayStation fans are still awaiting some of the biggest franchises on the machine to emerge, such as Metal Gear Solid, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo.

The people at Sony's management must be like monkeys or something. They do stupid things, then keep scratching their heads in surprise it failed, then keep doing it again and again. The company is in so much debt because of this attitude it's getting in red zone with most financial institutions.
When the Internet heard of Nintendo's system, how it didn't have the power behind it, How it didn't support HD, and it would be named Wii.. lots of people voiced their negative opinions about the system.
Surprisingly the system everybody hated is doing better.
thats my 2 cents.

wii is unique because it's something new, and i mean directly new, as in hands-on new
I never asked for a system that costs $600. I would never even imagine spending that much on a console. Sony should have figured out that there's a limit. Yeah, we wanted the power and all that, but even the 360 put a cap on it. It's ridiculous to actually expect people to buy this. Most of the people here that want one are college kids who are already in debt (hi), or they are high school kids who will be absolutely damned if they can convince their parents there's reason they need to spend this much on a console to keep their love.

Bingo. That price tag lopped off a huge chunk of their market. They're gonna have to keep the PS2 alive if they want to compete now.
Actually, I don't think price really has much of an effect at all, to be honist. Here in Australia, Sony expect us to pay AUS$999 (roughly ~US$860) and the PS3 is currently outselling the Wii and 360, it is selling like hot cakes. So I don't think that it's really that people cannot afford it, cause they can.
However, I think Blu-Ray could be the main reason for PS3's huge success in Australia. Quite honistly the PS3 game library is laughable right now, but it is currently the cheapest Blu-Ray player around and HD-DVD is nowhere tobe seen. Of cause this is only what I think, so take with a grain of salt.

Inner city and lower income market is huge in America..everyone and their grandma owns a PS2..almost none of them are gonna shell out anything more than $300. Sony needs to keep supporting the PS2 at least until PS3 prices drop to that $300 range.

I think more people liked the Wii before it came out for it's revolutionary controller style/design then hated it...
lmao... no need, no need.
Sony is getting their arse kicked either way.
isnt that what they are still saying about the wii ? that there are no "big" games out for it yet?
will be interesting when the wii and ps3 do get the "big" titles, wonder if the ps3 can keep up...

the damage is done though, it wont matter, even if they come out with a few great games the console will still cost more than the 360 which in part has nearly all the same games as ps3 ( or comperable titles)... i cant justify buying a ps3 when i can get 97% of the games on it as well...sure i cant get MGS or FF, but nearly everything else is out on both platforms
"WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"
When the Wii was revealed fully, there was a fair amount of Negative talk; the Control Scheme and the name part mainly.
However, the Wii has lived up to the promises of Nintendo, and it's a huge hit. Not only is it a totally different kind of experience, it's also far cheaper and smaller. And although it can be a different experience, you can always play games the old Fashion way if you really want, such as SSBM and DBZBT2. It also fully plays the 'Cubes' back catalog, as well as half of the old 90's games systems. It's built in with voting channels, Photo-editing, Character and Profile customization, tonnes of Memory, and even News and Weather channels, not that they are essential however.
The Playstation 3 offers all this hardcore brand new technology, but as consumers, we really don't need all of that stuff. Blu-ray? Advertised as the biggest thing since the NES after the 1980's game-crash!? No one really seems to understand why we need it so bad... we honestly don't at this moment in time. The games on PS3 are also more or less Identical to the 360 Versions, having looked at all of this on many Websites, such as Gamespot. The PS3 CAN do fairly better graphics from what the 360 offers, but it's never really used to its full potential, and games on PS3 can never measure up to the graphical capabilities of the PC anyway, so you'd save a lot of money if you just got a 360 or a Wii. Graphics don't matter, and the Blu-ray isn't desperately NEEDED, so what does the PS3 offer...a few exclusive titles? Well give me Halo 3 or Mario Galaxy anytime!
Whereas lots of people seem to have bought the Wii as its something different to the other consoles, I dont know anyone whos waiting for a major release on the Wii. Personally... i think sony will win in the long run, games such as MGS are obviously targeted at the older gamer.... not saying the Wii isnt, but I think a lot of them have been sold to keep younger children busy. If I had children I would probably get a Wii, but i'm Snake Plissken at heart. Everyone I know who wants a Wii has one... but I know lots of people who want a PS3 but havent got one yet.
