Former America Chief Kaz Hirai, now president of SCEI, briefly took the stage at Sony’s E3 press conference to announce a slimmer and lighter PlayStation Portable system to be released in North America in October. The new PSP is 33% lighter and 10% thinner, though the rest of the handheld’s dimensions appear to be the same (button layout and LCD display are unchanged). The battery is touted to be more efficient, although by how much was not detailed. Hirai also said the new PSP would load games faster, presumably with an improved UMD drive.

The most notable change from a functionality standpoint is the addition of video output capabilities to the PSP. The new hardware can output video to an external display, and may also be used for displaying photos and playing games on an external display. A silver-colored PSP will be available alongside the piano-black model. A special Star Wars-themed PSP with an image of Darth Vader printed on the back will be part of the Star Wars pack along with the Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade Squadron game. The second new PSP bundle will include the new hardware, including the silver-colored PSP, the game Daxter, a 1GB memory stick Duo, and a Family Guy Freakin’ Sweet Collection UMD. Both bundles will retail for $199.

wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too late, doesnt sound that good tbh lighter psp, wasnt heavy to begin with! u aint gunna get ppl with a ds lite to trade for 1 of them. create a psp2 with better specs etc then we'll see.
#2 Samboini on 11 Jul 2007 - 23:07
The changes imo are not significant enough.
#3 MightyJordan on 11 Jul 2007 - 23:17
I don't like it as thin as it currently is. This is gonna make things worse for me. And I agree with torrentthief. It is way too late. They should just concentrate on trying to sell some PS3s.

i think this is good, it is not a psp 2 it is a hardware re-design, so still needs all the old features adn to play old games. as for the video out, i may buy a new one just for that.

as for the DS comment, get a life, the DS does not come anywhere near close to the psp in terms of technology. the DS is for kids the PSP for real gamers
#4.1 Danrarbc on 12 Jul 2007 - 04:39
Technology or not, DS is still a worthwhile system for gamers.

And what the hell is a real gamer?
#4.2 Lawliet on 13 Jul 2007 - 07:35
Well, according to your train of thought, there are a lot for kids in the world than "real gamers".

It depends on what one wants when they get a handheld. I personally prefer a DS but I applaud Sony's attempt for a new PSP and I am rather excited by it even though I won't be getting it.

What a ridiculously shallow comment. It's amazing when the people who consider themselves 'mature' act most like 7 year-olds on the playground.

ok maybe the real gamers bit was a little mean, i apologise to all the real gamers with DS's that got offended, but the TRUTH is and even Nintendo and Sony will vouch for me on this one, the DS was designed and is primarily targeted at Kids, The PSP was designed and is primarily targeted at Adults.

Sorry but it's the truth

I may have to buy a psp again. I hated the black only thing.
#5.1 The Gunslinger on 12 Jul 2007 - 12:46
I think, at the end of the day, the psp tried to do too much...

It should have been a stand alone dedicated gaming console, and not a mini multimedia centre... that would have drove down the price and gotten designers to focus on games!

The DS is brilliant! Any gamer will tell you it offers so much more in way of gameplay than the psp does! I know it sucks that it has limited multimedia suport, but that is a small sacrifice for a great hand held unit...

Thats not a redesign They should consult Nintendo in how to do portable console redesigns.

PSP is a dead system, sorry to disappoint people but the crappy game developers killed a great system. Sony gave them a powerful little system and they failed to bring it to its full potential. Sony now releasing the second PSP won't change much.

totally disgree, the ps3 psp compatibility will drive the psp sales once the ps3 takes off, also a redesign will get new users. do agree most of the games are a little crap, and they blame piracy for not buying games, i blame **** games for not buying games. hey i bought both the GTA's without thinking, most of the other games don't really do it for me.

i tried the gameboy advance to Nintendo gamecube compatibility.. your not missing too much.

I don't feel that ds/wii connectivity will go that far either..

it all depends on whether Sony lives up to it's promises of what it will deliver (i agree at the moment it is crap) but if they bring in the wing/reverse mirror concept for car games and other things like that i can see it as being extremely popular

I corrected your post. Since you based one almost failure's success on another's total failure.

I bought a PSP recently (11 days ago, took it back now I know about this one), and I have to disagree.

There are lots of exciting new games for the PSP, and the platform is powerful enough for a handheld to carry on for at least 2 years. The games are pretty lacking right now, with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories being the only two games I've found to be much good (although Tekken looks great, as does Killzone Liberation). But Silent Hill is coming, Final Fantasy is coming, God of War is coming, Gran Turismo is coming, as is a new PSP-accessible store offering PSOne games for download. The platform isn't slowing down.

Sony have admitted that PSP games have been disappointing so far. But now they reckon (God knows how they came up with this) that they can leave the PS3 to the developers for a while, apparently they'll shift their efforts to new PSP games.

it looks the same thing for me, the same crappy d-pad (i hate sony playstation d-pads why cant they make it like nintendo), it share the same ergonomic problems from the previous console
#8.1 AnarKhy on 13 Jul 2007 - 01:12
i think nintendo have the patent of d-pad. and yes, sony d pads is crappy, they should get a license from nintendo.

Yay finally and video output rocks too. my psp died (well the lens anyway) and i sent it to some guy to check it. When i got it back the screen was misaligned and had dust underneath but at least i didn't pay for anything. so now its a big paper weight that could still play videos, mp3s, surf internet but who uses that anyway.
#10 Orhon on 12 Jul 2007 - 17:35
i have both psp and DS. DS owns in gaming. PSP owns in multimedia.

if they stuck a mac logo on in madeit white and pretty, i am sure you would ppay 3 times what they usulaly charge and say it is an amazingly brilliant deal.

always has to be one mac lover

ok fair comment, sorry for calling you a mac lover as you obviously arent i do agree they look pretty and all that, but in terms of pretiness the PSP still is prettier than the DS by far in my opinion.

I think gba micro is the coolest system, too bad its dying...

i had one but sold it the screen is WAY to small
#13 +Shadrack on 14 Jul 2007 - 06:07
Hopefully this will help spur more game development along. The only thing that seems to really make the DS better than the PSP is the titles that are available.

Not sure if im missing something here but hasnt the psp been out for years, if so wtf has it taken years to get any decent games on it sounds abit stupid really in my opinion. People saying wow some good games are coming out for it, yeah cool but again why has it taken years for them to be released.

Waste of money in my opinion. Too little to late id say
#14.1 whocares78 on 16 Jul 2007 - 03:08
the psp has taken so long to take of because of sony, bad marketing, as with the ps3, hey i didn't even know it was out when i bought mine, my mate had one i played with it for all of 10 seconds and i went and bought one, sony really needs to sack their marketing department. They havea n awesome device, they just never told anyone about all the cool stuff it does

message to sony- stop worrnying about stopping the hackers, it'sa waste of money , they will keep hacking it again and again and again, make it worthwhile at a reasonable price and people will pay.

I'd have to totally agree with you on this one... Sony is killing this product with their excessive policing of the homebrew community. They just dont want anyone messing with / hacking their system. This just shows their ignorance (arrogance? ).

Nintendo are not going after the DS homebrew community. This hasnt lead to a decrease in sales, or loss in profits (as seen from DS and software sales). The DS is doing extremely well in spite of homebrew! Homebrew actually really enhances the DS.

They should encourage homebrew, since the PSP is more homebrew friendly than the DS, maybe then more people would buy the PSPs.
#15 este on 20 Jul 2007 - 18:08
I know that they just lowered the price of the old model to $169 and I see that the bundle will sell for $199, but will the revised PSP be any cheaper when sold by itself?

Can't say I would invest in the bundle because I'd like a larger memory stick (1GB only?) and don't care for any of the other extras. I would consider purchasing the system though, perhaps if it sold for $150 or so.
#16 Xerxes on 21 Aug 2007 - 08:23
The faster loading (thx to Sony doubling the system RAM to 64Mb) and longer battery life (you can apparently double it, if you use the battery from the old PSP in it) I'd definetly like to have, but I've only recently bought my PSP (d'oh! ) so I'd be wasting my money upgrading to the new one oh well, I'm still happy with my old PSP

<snip> Nevermind what I said I was just rambling again Perhaps I'll trade in my old PSP for a new one in a year or two once the new one proves itself as a worthy improvement over the original.
