No PS3 price cut or 80GB PS3 for PAL territories

Sony announced on July 9 that it would be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in North America to $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, and that the 80GB version of the console, originally announced to be coming to Korea only, would also be making its way to North American soil in August. However, the company refused to say whether or not price cuts and the 80GB machine would also be coming to other regions, stating simply that, "This is a North American announcement only." However, a Sony Europe spokesperson said that an announcement "following on from the SCEA one" would be coming later in the week.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves confirmed in a press conference that the price cut would only be for North Americans, and that the console would definitely not be getting a price cut from the current £425/599 euro price (approx $850). Aussies are getting a similar deal--there will be no price drop from the current price of A$999. Another blow was dealt to European and Aussie gamers with the news that the souped-up 80GB version would also not be coming to the regions. Instead, a new bundle called the "value pack" will be put on sale for the same price at which the stand-alone console was previously available, which will include a 60GB PS3, two controllers, and two games--Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. This will be available for the usual price in all the regions, although the games would vary from region to region.

You'd think that Sony would do whatever it takes to sell these after the massive loans they took out to develope these consoles. Oh well that's Sony for ya.

i dont get this... the PS3 is said to be a good seller in some of the PAL areas yet thet always leave us with the short end of the stick...

Oh Dear,

When they shafted us in Europe over the PSP, so many people used it as an excuse to stick it to Sony by running custom firmware and pirating their games (some would say they'd take any excuse).

I can certainly see the same happening now, if I wasn't so happy with my 360 even I'd be tempted to buy a PS3 and chip it.

Tell me again Kaz, Why is our 60GB PS3 twice as expensive as the US?

PAL territories are where Sony is getting it's best sales from so why would they cut the prices.
#6 brent3000 on 16 Jul 2007 - 09:33
why woudnt they give us more then... make us pay like 1,200 or something like this for a newer thing.... we get jipped in every time wen it comes to the lattest and greatest....

Not that I'm defending Sony in the SLIGHTEST, but Microsoft has ripped us off with the 360 Elite as well, so it's not like they're much better (although that's still £330 compared to Sony's £425).

Still, it's an absolute disgrace that us Europeans get ripped off so much, but hey, the PS3 isn't region locked so go ahead and import a NA one if you really want it.

a big lol @ Sony.

Sony is cuttiong the price here because one of their hugest markets is inner city and urban dudes. The original price cut that market off at the knees. Dont know if this will help much tho.

I bought a PS3 PAL from Currys for £210 (60gb, 2 wireless controllers + motorstorm), huzzah for incorrect pricing? It really isn't worth any more than that if it was incorrectly priced...

PAL is not just europe, just letting you all know

and the pople complaining about the price difference, have you checked it after converting it. i.e. one US dollar = 0.7 euros

I know PAL is not just Europe, it is in South Africa too.

But lets look at our exchange rate. It is around R7 to the $...

And the PS3 retails for around R6600 (which is a HUGE amount)...which is approximately $943...

Whereas you guys in North America get it around $600...

The 360 retails around R3600, approximately $514...

Sony is getting burned for the sheer arrogance...Thinking they can sell anything they stick a Sony badge on, regardless of price.

and australia, and pretty much everywhere else in the world besides the US and Japan , besides them wierd countries that use secam, crazy format that one.

but anyway i know the PS3 in AU is $1000 which works out to be about as close to US $600 as you can get with all the currency changes and stuff, i just assumed the rest of the world would be the same, i spose they need to addd shipping and handling and all that crap too.

You would assume that would be the case...but can shipping and middle men really add up to the price of US $ 342?

In New Zealand the PS3 (60GB only) is on sale for NZD$1147/USD$907 (incl. taxes). I think you Europeans have it a little better than us.
#17 Shadrack on 22 Jul 2007 - 18:14
I wonder why Sony wouldn't cut the prices in Europe. It isn't like they are honestly trying to "stick it to" the PAL regions. Maybe importing costs more in those countries do to taxes which are relayed to the customers :|?
