ith the battle between HD DVD and Blu-Ray heading into the deciding round, Microsoft has cut the price of its HD DVD add-on with the XBox Elite just around the corner.

While the price of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player has only been cut by $20, if you purchase one between August 1st and September 30th, they'll throw in five free films to get your collection underway.

"With the price reduction to $179, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player continues to be the most affordable way to enjoy to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox Live Marketplace - both of which have a selection of the best content Hollywood has to offer. Today's announcements around '300' and 'Heroes: Season 1' are great examples of how we believe HD content can be offered to customers."

Fingers crossed such an incentive is on the cards for Europe, which would give the format a real boost against blu-ray.

If they do this here in Australia, I'd seriously consider grabbing one while I still only run my 360 on a SDTV, I do have a nice (and fairly big) HDCP compliant LCD monitor (well two actually) and in other news, you can actually buy HD-DVD movies in Australia now (perhaps they have been on sale for sometime but I haven't noticed )

I understand it works with the PC, but can it be internalized? I don't want a USB peripheral if I don't have to.

The knockdown I saw suggested it used a laptop-style one-plug interface instead of the desktop-style seperate data and power.

I thought it contained some kind of interface board that it needed to work properly.

The drive can be taken out of the enclosure and slipped right in to a drive bay. It works really well.

I've seen Blu-Ray discs in retail stores, but HD-DVD I did not. (Netherlands, Europe)
What is a Player without a disc to put in it?
Does anyone know what format will be used for future TV-series to disc? Blu-ray or HD-DVD?
