In a lawsuit disclosed just today, Beijing-based software company Founder Group has filed a lawsuit against Blizzard Entertainment, the creator of the "World of Warcraft," and WoW's local operator in China for allegedly using its Chinese character fonts illegally. Founder Group's lawsuit seeks $13.2 million in damages, company spokesman Song Zhenying said Friday. The Chinese version of "World of Warcraft," run by Shanghai-based The9 Ltd., uses five Chinese character fonts developed by Founder without authorization, Song said. Founder employees discovered the alleged violations while playing the game. The9 spokesman James Zhao said the company's lawyers are still studying the lawsuit and that he had no further comment; Blizzard didn't immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment. Currently, a court date has not been set.

lmao got sued for fonts...

13mil in damage for 5 characters? i doubt they'd ever make that much even with all their characters combined

5 Character fonts, not just 5 characters But your point is still very valid I reckon.

13million isn't really that much when you think of how much money blizzard makes from WoW every month. But still, if these allegations are true then it's very sloppy on Blizzard's part.

No, I mean blizzard. It's their property, The9 just runs the servers.

How often do you look at fonts and think "Hey, I recognise that!"?

Um.. all the time. Being a graphic designer in the massive industry it is, it is a necessity to know your fonts.

As a note, go have a look how much a character font costs. A lot of time goes into creating a font, as every single letter has to be designed obviously.

Even better, google for the Helvetica Family fonts or Gill Sans...

Why do you think all those font designers have WoW accounts? They may have lives, ya know. Like Blizzard employees, "WoW accounts? Hell no! We have lives." (from South Park)

Fonts are intelectual proprty designed by a designer to. In a fontmakers eyes, its just like stealing any other piece of creative artwork.

Guys, this isn't another ridiculous lawsuit of a tiny corporation with bizzare patents suing a big one just to get some quick and dirty cash. A group of people worked to created five fonts, and the company sells them to others. Blizzard used them without permission. But uh.. what a bland name. :p Thats like calling your yogurt company Yogurt Group!

i'd say blizz should ban their accounts

This is not far fetched, companies can sue over use of copyrighted "True Type Fonts" here in the US as well.
