The rock gods have spoken, and gamers around the world will now be able to unleash their inner-rock star on two brand new platforms. Aspyr Media, in partnership with Activision, Inc. today announced that the third iteration of the wildly popular Guitar Hero franchise, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, will be available to PC and Mac gamers for the first time ever this fall.

Being developed and published exclusively by Aspyr, the PC and Mac versions will match their console counterparts with explosive new content and features including a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a host of exclusive unlockable content and visually stunning rock venues. With more than 70 songs in the set list, and more original master tracks than ever before, players will be able to shred from many of the freshest and hottest artists today, along with many of the most popular rock songs ever recorded. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow PC and Mac enthusiasts to rip head-to-head against players around the world and across either platform, raising the level of competition for true legendary rock status.

"Working with such a wildly successful franchise and helping to strengthen an already powerful brand has us feeling like rock stars ourselves, only without the fame, money or musical talent," said Ted Staloch, Executive Vice President, Publishing for Aspyr. "But even without Slashšs chops, we still have what it takes to bring the best music game on the planet to PC and Mac gamers. Aspyršs expertise in developing and publishing for these platforms means that we will deliver a game that wails just as hard as it does on consoles but feels natural on this audiencešs chosen platform."

"Providing the option for our fans to play Guitar Hero at their desk or on a laptop on the go is incredibly exciting, and wešre thrilled to now offer the ability to rock out literally anywhere and everywhere," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. "PC and Mac gamers can now shred as hard as their console counterparts do, and itšs a great opportunity to help promote musicianship and expand the growing number of Guitar Hero fans worldwide."

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on PC and Mac is rated T for Teen by the ESRB, and will be available this fall. For more information, please visit www.aspyr.com.

What would be really cool is if you could plug in a real guitar.

This is great news! I've been waiting for this to hit PC. The cross-platform play is gonna be crazy.

I think most people would agree that comparing FoF to Guitar Hero is like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not saying that FoF is a bad game, but I'd hardly compare it to GH in reality.

really? you can download all the GH songs for it and even plug in your existing GH USB guitar and play with it. they're certainly different but I'd say they're both apples.

2 Questions!

1) Does it come with a guitar? (I know it's a bit of an obvious one, but the article didn't seem to mention it at all and the reference to playing the game"on a laptop while on the go" is a bit worrying, since last I checked you couldn't just whip out a guitar on a train or something).

2) Will it be easily modifiable for custom content? That was a hit on the consoles and that WASN'T easy by any definition of the word, so on the PC I'd imagine it'd explode.

EDIT: Just checked the site and all I could find was this:

eatures

* More than 70 of the most legendary rock anthems of all time
* Added multiplayer modes: arcade inspired Guitar Battle and the dual shredding co-op career
* Challenge Slash and other legends of rock and roll in boss battles
* Take those axe shredding skills online and rock around the world
* All-new tricked out venues taking you to hell and back
* The franchise’s favorite characters freshly fitted with a few new faces
* Fully playable with keyboard or keyboard/mouse. Re-map the buttons to suit your style of play

While I'm sure there'll be plenty of 3rd party guitar controllers out there to meet the launch, an official one would be better =(

1. I'll look into that, but as far as I can tell - no it doesn't come with a guitar.

2. I highly, HIGHLY doubt the PC version will be modifiable. The RIAA etc etc would explode and take out half of the western hemisphere.

Well, by what other people saying that the XBox 360 guitar works on the PC for Frets on Fire (it is USB, afterall) I'm really hoping that the support will be native in GHIII.

It won't support 'OEM' modification - but this game is going to be hacked and modded like crazy, you watch.

Guitar hero without the guitar isn't very Guitar Hero! Obviously, an option to use the keyboard (mouse? how would this work) should be available, I think a guitar really should be included.

Ah well, as long as I can buy it separate and play with it.

Aspyr has pretty much failed to make proper Activision PC ports with both Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Spider-Man 3 running terrible on the PC and then never releasing a patch for either of the games. Aspyr's bad track record does not leave me with a lot of confidence about the game. GH3 will be another than a quick port with no support if any problems arise.
