According to the NPD group’s August 2007 report, sales of Microsoft Corporation’s Xbox 360 game console increased tremendously in the United States following the price drop, while the Nintendo Wii game console continued its overall domination. Last month, Microsoft Xbox 360 game console was acquired by 276.7 thousand of gamers across the U.S., a 62.7% increase over July, when sell through figures for the Xbox 360 dropped partly because of the scandal regarding malfunction game consoles as well as Sony PlayStation 3 price cut. The latter could not sustain its success on the market in August and sales of PS3 decreased by 18% to 130.6 thousand, meaning that Xbox 360 now outsells PlayStation 3 by a factor of two in the U.S. The Nintendo Wii faced a 5.1% sell through decline but still managed to sell 403.6 thousand of consoles.

In general, the market of non-portable game consoles was up 3.7% sequentially in August with only Microsoft Xbox 360 enjoying sales increase. Meanwhile, the market of portable game consoles shrank again by nearly 18% in August to approximately 583.4 thousand of units across the board. Nintendo sustains its leadership in the field with 383.3 thousand of Nintendo DS sold through and 69.5 thousand of Game Boy Advance bought by gamers in the USA. Sales of Sony PlayStation Portable dropped tangibly to 130.6 thousand of devices.

Wait for an Elite. After sending back my quite Premium, I bought a Elite (month ago), and it runs cooler. It might just be me, but it seems like there is less of a sauna in my media cabinet.

Or get the Halo 3 Special Edition console; just got it today myself . Colors not bad, the orange even blends in somewhat nicely with my wooden cabinet. The green is a nice, "dull" army green too; nothing hideous or even close.

i'm definitely getting a Elite, i can get it now but i have no real rush/need now. My girlfriend is gone to Germany for 5 months and she was the main reason i didn't get it. First she didn't want me to and we were always going out when she was here so i wouldn't have time to play it anyways... now.. hmmm i have the cash saved, who knows i might have one in 10mins or so

Do it, you know you want to

Seriously though, when compared with the PS3 the 360 has the best collection of games, the best online service and I personally think it has the best controller too. Also it is outselling the PS3 by two-to-one despite being over a year older than the PS3. Those facts alone speak volumes. Oh and Halo 3

I agree on the controller. I have the 360 for windows and it is definitely the most comfortable controller Ive ever used...and Im pretty sure Ive used them all. The shoulder buttons are so welcomed. I always wished the first xbox controller had them.

I'm a diehard playstation fanatic as Playstation and Playstation 2 were the best of their generations (N64 had close to zilch in RPGs, though still fun). I still have hope for the PS3, but that said, I'm ready to hit up the Xbox 360. Best controller, great library, and everything on PS3 will be hitting 360 for the most part (and my friend has a PS3 anyway so whatev).

Only thing that concerns me is the epic "ring of death". Makes me VERRRY cautious..

..and as for Wii, no-f---ing thank you. As I say with every post, it's a remodeled GameCube that they sold you all into with their new "fab" controller. Seriously, not only did they resell you the console, but they're reselling all their old games that even the DS could handle!! That said, even if games like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, Oblivion, and such were to be available on the Wii, I SERIOUSLY doubt it'd be playable, unless the graphics were watered down horribly (which kind of defeats the beauty of games like Oblivion, no?).

Meh, ranting again. I just hate this stupid hype they sold us to is all. Meanwhile, everyone with a Wii has it sitting collecting dust after beating Zelda~ -sigh-

Lets put it all into perspective. 400 thousand Wii (etc.) sold, 300 million people in the states. There's not really THAT many gamers around.

I'm thinking that the majority just don't care for games/ Don't have the money for one of these new ones. I do see a ton of people buying up used PS2/SNES/Genesis consoles.

I just find it interesting, something to hang your hat on I guess.

You forgot that it's 400 thousand per month
#4.2 +Kirkburn on 16 Sep 2007 - 14:28
Of those 300 million ... how many already own a console? How many are old (or perhaps young) enough to buy a console? How many live together, and therefore wouldn't each need their own console?

Brings down the numbers considerably ...

Also, remember the people who own more than 1 of each system. I own 2 Wii's, 3 360's, and 2 PS3's. Just too lazy to have to go to a different room to play =/, so that would bring the number down a bit as well, for people who do the samething as me.

US age structure: (2007 est.)

0–19 years: 27.4% (male 42,667,761; female 40,328,895)
20–64 years: 60.1% (male 89,881,041; female 90,813,57 Wow, look at all those baby boomers and 2/1(sort of) ratio females to males! Awesome if you're a male or a lesbian...hmm but that cuts into the hetro male so I guess its even.
65 years and over: 12.6% (male 15,858,477; female 21,991,195)

Add these numbers to all the other factors mentioned....those numbers are looking tiny now.

Please tell me you're either insanely rich or clinicly retarded. Because those are the only two reasons why you should own more than one of each of those systems. Maybe if they were cheaper...but still...

Good, the only reason why the Wii is selling that much,it's because Xbox 360 high price, this drop shows the preference of the market, showing a increeased peak demand for the product,if the price drop continues ;xbox could catch up,and perhaps surpass the Wii in a near future.
(1 reply) #6 Unwonted on 17 Sep 2007 - 00:15
From the day the Wii was released, console positioning has been inversely proportional to price.

People don't care about power or quality. These numbers lend evidence to proving that price is the number one selling factor in the console market.

i think your pretty much right in terms of the average joe that dont really get into gaming like the more serious person does.

me personally though i look at games more than anything as to what console i want and right now i think the xbox360 is winning in this area by far... but the ps3 will eventually catch up.

i think ONLY reason wii is so popular is cause of it's unique controller design with the physical movement which is attracting people that normally would not give a damn about video games etc.

The grammar in that article is awful.

who cares about grammar... it's just words ... cause the bottom line is, as long as u can understand what there saying thats all that ultimately matters... i hate people when they whine about words even though it's clearly understandable.

Maybe it's because it's a news site? Unprofessional journalism shouldn't mean outright disregard for simple spelling and grammar rules.
