British gamer Shaun Clark has won the UK's first gaming gold at the World Cyber Games.

Mr Clark, aka Apollooo, took the top medal in the Command & Conquer 3 tournament at the week-long festival of video gaming held last week in Seattle. The gold is the first the UK has claimed in the six years that the global tournament has been staged.

Britons also took a silver and bronze in other games to put the UK in sixth place in the overall medal rankings.

Mr Clark struggled in the opening stages of the tournament in which he had to take on the top US and German players of the real-time strategy title C&C3: Tiberium Wars.

However, once past the German ace Mr Clark, who plays for the Team Dignitas pro-gaming team, made steady progress through the playoffs before triumphing in the final. For his work Mr Clark picked up a cheque for $12,000 (£5,877).

I wonder what it's like to devote your life to being a 'Pro-Gamer'
do they ever see sunlight? A very rewarding accomplishment for him though I'm sure

May be thats the American way of doing it, but Google says Britain is fine and its the one I've always used.

Britain is the place, a Briton is somebody from there. Both would work for the heading.

If they're really good, and I mean REALLY good, they can make a bloody fortune from tournaments. Look at Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel. He's won over $500,000 in competitions, but that obviously doesn't include the sponsorship and endorsements he does as well.

There is also Thresh, who started Firingsquad and XFire with his gaming earnings. He sold XFire to MTV for $102 million!

Correct. It's funny that after explaining it, it still wasn't understood.

But American also apply for Canadian, Mexican and even for Cubans, so to use American is the same to say European.

Technically that is correct, but if you refer to a Canadian or a Cuban as an American I think they will beg to differ.

I've played this game, it's very entertaining. I usually start with a surveyor / crane, refinery / refinery (shut power down to save energy), and power / power. However it's a "big economy" strategy, you can easily avoid rushes by selling your surveyor and placing the power around your MCV. I always group powers by group of two.

I'd like to know the strategy of these players, someone knows where I can get their replays?
#4.1 MegaManXcalibur on 09 Oct 2007 - 02:34
I haven't seen the replays but I'm sure their strategy equates to a large number of mammoth tanks.

Seriously mammoths with railguns are the best unit money can buy, I love those buggers.

It's insane. Ok, games are funny at all but when some people take this competition for a career.. may be they are earning so much money but also spending time in a zero-future prospect.

You could say that athletes have zero future prospects. How is this any different from being an athlete?
