Video game developer Electronic Arts Incorporated has announced plans to pay up to $775 million in cash and stock to acquire two software studios from Elevation Partners: BioWare Corporation and Pandemic Studios. Together, the studios have a total of 10 games under development and employ about 800 people in Los Angeles and Austin, Texas, as well as in Canada and Australia. The acquisition, which is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval, is expected to close in January.

Microsoft Corporation is planning to publish BioWare's Mass Effect game next month, and the studio is in the early stages of developing a multiplayer online game. Pandemic is planning to release "Mercenaries 2: World in Flames" and "Saboteur." EA expects the deal to lower its 2008 earnings by about 30 to 40 cents per share.

despite all the hate for C&C3, all the complaints that EA ruined the C&C thing
i have C&C3 and really enjoy it
i will say tho, EA's games have a 'gross' feel to them, all the intro videos u gotta watch, that stupid ea logo, the multiplayer system bugs me to..how u join games in their gmaes n stuff
Maybe im spoiled by blizzards wow/bnet systems..but i hate multiplayer on EA games.

BioWare sounds so much unlike the kind of game style EA seem to be pushing. Makes one worried it will turn into a Westwood II.

This is really not a good thing... EA **** up everything they touch...
Yes, I'll admit C&C 3 was good and I enjoyed it, but it was nothing compared to Red Alert 2 and earlier.

EA love multi-platforming and endless sequels, because all they care about is the cash flow not the quality,
multi-platforming and sequels the EA way usually make games worse, not better...

There goes another great developer brought under upper level mangemetn sticking there fingers in projects and making great project's much worse, more bugs and more "rushed" out the door...

RIP Westwood, Bullfrog, Maxis, Bioware will soon be among you.

Welcome KOTR/Jade Empire game engine games being pumped out without the great plot , lack of orginal setting and various other things that made them stand out.

This is terrible news... EA has the Midas touch, except with poo instead of gold.

Aw crap.
EA are the Borg of the gaming industry.

We are the EA. Lower your standards and prepare to be acquired. Your intellectual and cultural distinctiveness will be discarded. You will adapt to serve the EA. Resistance is futile.

You can say that again, they have quite the skill at destroying companies once they buy them

EA is just following MS's winning strategy, buying up their competition...its the worst possible thing for gaming, unless you're EA. Its gonna come down to two gaming goliaths, EA vs Microsoft Game Studios.

I can't believe BioWare. I have lost all respect for this company. They have worked hard for years to become known to the point where if you hear about them making a game, you automatically pre-order it, because it's guaranteed to kick ass with no questions asked, and now all this work has went down the drain. EA killed NFL games, NASCAR games, DesertCombat for BF1942, and now they are going to kill an entire developing company.

I'm glad I haven't pre-ordered Mass Effect yet. I would be cancelling my pre-order if I had. Anyone associated with EA deserves no respect at all.
