In 2005, we started the Neowin Community Game Awards. Unlike other "Best of Year" awards, every step of the process is voted on by the members. From the initial nominations to the final voting, you, the people who play the games, get to voice your opinions on which titles truly stood out from the rest. The NCGA's are the epitome of a "for the fans, by the fans" award.

The time has arrived, finally, for us to pick up where we left off two years ago (we missed a beat in 2006). The nomination round is now upon us. In this round, all members are asked to visit the nomination page and submit their choices for "Best of" in each category. Not a member, but want to contribute? All you have to do is register! This round will continue until October 29th, at which point nominations will be closed and the results tallied. The five most nominated games in each category will then proceed to the final voting round where they'll duke it out for the crown.

What else can be said? Let's get clicking and let's start nominating!

Please only nominate games you truly feel deserve the recognition released between October '06 and October '07. You can fill in as many or few of the categories as you like. Blank fields will be accepted as a null nomination.

Call of Duty 4 counts right? the beta is out, and releases in a few weeks. It's honestly the best game i've ever played, and it's only in beta

Unfortunately, if it's not released by the 29th, then it will be disqualified. I put in the time frame so people can be sure in future nominations. Sorry about that.

Meh, too many great games have yet to be released this year for me to consider this poll valid.

Wait until the actual end of the year and let's get all the great titels in the poll, Mass Effect, AC6, CoD4 and Crysis - Huge titles.
#3.1 vetbangbang023 on 15 Oct 2007 - 20:48
That's why it's October 2006 to October 2007? The glory of reading.
(5 replies) #4 +MichaelBL on 15 Oct 2007 - 20:57
Still extremely random time frame, so I'll just avoid it

Glory of being me.

Most game awards use this time, from Nov to Nov. You can release the results with full write up for 2007 in 2008.

No, but considering those of us working on this are doing it in our free time AND we need a period of one month for the community to give their input, we need the head start to get this all done on time. If you don't like it, don't take part. That's your prerogative, but we need to do this in a timely manner that allows us to get the work done while still working our real jobs and handling our real lives.

Very true.
But how's this related to "Nov/Oct" thing?

I appreciate all neowin staff's effort and their contribution but stating a wrong fact and evading that particular fact by arguing "effort and contribution of teh human people in newoin" instead of telling us the true reason is entertaining.

So now I sill has the question: why not "from Nov to Nov?"

Because our system involves one entire month of voting by the members; two weeks for nominating, a week off for us to tabulate the results and get the options into the script, then two more weeks for voting. That's five weeks. We're looking at ending that part of the process in the second half of November. Then, we have to sit down and actually write out the article and deal with contacting the respective publishers. Most magazines/publications don't do any of the 5 week process that we undertake. They pick their games, write their articles, and release them. On top of that, they get paid to do that. All of the work we do has to be done in our free time and it's, comparatively, a longer process to begin with. Starting in November would have us putting out the article in mid to late January. Unfortunately, that's too late as far as everyone else is concerned. Most other publications will have had their articles out for a good two weeks already.

Gears of War, no doubt!
#5.1 vetbangbang023 on 15 Oct 2007 - 21:22
Wow, I can't believe that was only released less than a year ago. You surprised me there.

Yep, definitely.

Where does Portal fit?
#10.1 vetbangbang023 on 16 Oct 2007 - 00:41
I guess that would be considered a puzzle game...a category we don't have at the moment. Crap. It can be put in "PC Game of the Year" if you want. I just contacted Blackice912, so hopefully the "Puzzle Game" category will be added within the next few hours if you can hold off nominating for a while.
(1 reply) #11 Kushan on 16 Oct 2007 - 01:45
Actually after reading the comments, I've just realised that a lot of the categories could be a bit vauge. Like Bioshock, is it an adventure game, an action game, an FPS, an RPG or what? It could easily fit into a few of the categories. Would it not be better to just have the people list their top 5 games of the year along with their top one for each console and then decide the category the games fit into after?
#11.1 vetbangbang023 on 16 Oct 2007 - 02:02
Bioshock is an FPS with RPG elements, but it's primarily an FPS. We're going to stick with the system we have now. It's a good idea, but something we'll consider for future iterations, not immediately.
(1 reply) #12 Joseph21 on 16 Oct 2007 - 02:06
final fantasy xii?
#12.1 vetbangbang023 on 16 Oct 2007 - 02:08
That would be an RPG. The US release falls within the window, so it would be accepted.
(1 reply) #13 MioTheGreat on 16 Oct 2007 - 02:22
So, do RPG games go in "Adventure"?
#13.1 vetbangbang023 on 16 Oct 2007 - 02:55
They would go in the (MMO)RPG category. Looks like the parentheses got left off in the script.
(3 replies) #14 Arctice on 16 Oct 2007 - 04:04
I voted for Bioshock as best overall.

...Does anyone else think the logo looks a bit...odd?
#14.1 kravex on 16 Oct 2007 - 09:45
Best for 360, but can't forgive them for the DRM mess on the PC
#14.2 monkey13 on 16 Oct 2007 - 10:03
Agreed about the logo. Looks like he's gaming on the bog and having trouble pinching one off.
#14.3 OtRaS on 16 Oct 2007 - 11:00
He does look a bit strange, he has no eyes, how does he know what game he is playing?

What's an example of an action game? I could put some things in either FPS or action, so how do I tell?
#15.1 vetbangbang023 on 16 Oct 2007 - 14:39
Action games would be a game like Ratchet and Clank.

Not really familiar with that, what would be an example of an action PC game?

I don't know, honestly. My inability to follow every game on the market is one of the reasons we made this a community thing to begin with. Think of action platformers, as those are the most common types of action games. Then again, a good action game candidate would be something like Stranglehold. I think that came out on the PC, too.

Is The Orange Box one game?

EDIT: Might I suggest for next year to include categories such as "Best Soundtrack" "Best Graphics" "Best Innovation" etc...?

We had those categories last time and it only serves to make the awards too long and too tedious. We decided to simplify it this time around and just stick to "best of genre".

The Orange Box wouldn't technically be one game. Portals is a puzzle game and HL2 and TF2 are first person shooters.

does this include those forum games like 'add a word to make a sentence' and stuff? like, a community game and stuff

No, this is about video games.
#18 Magallanes on 17 Oct 2007 - 12:03
IMHO

what's the point?. this list will be filled just with overhyped crap and the winner will be the more overhyped game from the moment (usually one of the latest).
#19 carmatic on 17 Oct 2007 - 16:54
actually , this isnt 'hype' as in the marketing department is trying to make you buy it, this is people who bought the game and trying to spread the happiness around
#20 tiagosilva29 on 17 Oct 2007 - 19:15
I haven't played anything launched in that period. 0_o
