Following the release of the massively popular Halo 3 game title, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console managed to outsell both Sony’s PlayStation 3 game console and the Nintendo Wii in September, according to the NPD Group. The 360 was acquired by two times more gamers (527.8 thousand) across the U.S compared to the previous month. Nintendo’s Wii also managed to attain a new record for itself: about 501 thousand units were bought in September. Unsurprisingly, with no new releases and with anticipation of massive price-cuts, Sony’s PlayStation 3 dropped to 119.4 thousand in September.

In general, the market of non-portable game consoles was up about 34% sequentially in September. In the meantime, the market of portable game consoles skyrocketed massively with 855.3 thousand game consoles sold. Nintendo sustained its leadership in the field with 495.8 thousand of Nintendo DS sold through and 75 thousand of Game Boy Advance bought by gamers in the USA. Sales of Sony PlayStation Portable also increased to 284.5 thousand of devices.

Duh on the 360 sales, if it haden't MS would never have had a point in launching Halo 3.

You wanna bet that Mass Effect launching in November will absolutely propel X360 to another record month. The reviews are already in and industry is saying that Mass Effect is simply mind blowing.

That's a pretty big leap! I hope they can keep up the console-selling titles. And look at Nintendo! Over a million units? Someone needs to wake Sony up.

Let's hope their recent price cuts can, along with some new titles due in the following weeks.

Halo 3 is released and 523000 Xboxes are sold. No big Wii game is released and 501000 are sold. Wonder how many Wiis will sell when Mario Galaxy comes out...

Good point. X360 won't be getting this distinguished award for many more months...

None because everyone in the world, including the starving Africans will own one.

Once again, while I want a 360.. watching my friends' 360s dying to the ring of death makes me not want to buy it.

Yup, of the 3 friends I have with xbox 360's, all 3 systems have suffered from the ROD syndrome. Now I'm sure the new ones are more reliable, but still... i'd hate to go through the warranty process and be without my new console for a few weeks.

They do come with pretty good ROD warranties... Heck I bought mine the night it came out and haven't had a problem yet!
