Stardock has released a demo of its award-winning PC strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition. This demo combines both the original release and the highly acclaimed expansion pack Dark Avatar into a single package.

According to GameRankings.com, Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar (which is part of Gold Edition) is the 5th highest rated game (all platforms, not just PC) of 2007 with an average review score of 9.3 out of 10.

Galactic Civilizations is a space based strategy game in which players take control of one of over a dozen space-faring civilizations. The object of the game is to conquer the galaxy using whatever means necessary including military power, diplomatic skill, technological might or cultural influence.

Unless my eyes are fuzzy, the ranking picture shows that GalCivII is 7th, not 5th.

That's because they list Bioshock and Orange box twice.

No, it's not ranked twice.. and changing the score to boost the game's appeal in your "advertising" isn't ethical at all..

It's ranked 7th, because it's 7th...

The Orange Box - FOR PC
The Orange Box - FOR XBOX360
Bioshock - FOR XBOX360
Bioshock - FOR PC
Halo 3 - FOR XBOX 360
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion - FOR PS3
Galactic Civilizations II Dark Avatar - FOR PC <Seventh

and then God of War 2, Guitar Hero 2, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition.

The games are not ranked twice, those ARE different systems.

....

-edit-

I do stand corrected, it's listed
1. Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords PC Stardock 50 8.5 87.0%
2. Galactic Civilizations PC Strategy First 35 7.3 82.5%

"According to GameRankings.com, Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar (which is part of Gold Edition) is the 5th highest rated game (all platforms, not just PC) of 2007 with an average review score of 9.3 out of 10."

^Is blatantly false^ Average review of the game is 8.5

First, you were referring to Galactic Civilizations I.

Secondly, Orange Box and Bioshock are listed twice. They're not different games just because they're on different platforms.

Thirdly, you're splitting hairs. Out of the differeng games released this year, Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar (the main element of Gold Edition) is #5.

Lastly, here is the listing for Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar:

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/934...20Civilizations

Average score 9.3 out of 10.

Here is a listing for Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition:

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/938...20Civilizations

Average score 9.4 out of 10 (but only 3 reviews).

It's rather rude to accuse someone of being unethical when your facts are totally wrong. No one changed the scores. You should know what you're talking about before insulting people.

Yes, but normally when a system is listed twice, and for different systems, they are counted differently.

Okay, so if we go over to Metacritic (also owned by CNET, just like GameRankings) and did a custom search for all games for all platforms released after 12/31/2006, it comes in at number 18.

If we remove duplicates, it'll be like this:

- Super Mario Galaxy
- Bioshock
- The Orange Box
- Out of the Park Baseball 2007
- Call of Duty 4
- Halo 3
- God of War II
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (not sure what its score was last year)
- Team Fortress II (included in Orange Box... not sure why it's separate?)
- Final Fantasy VI Advance
- Guitar Hero II
- WoW: The Burning Crusade
- Virtua Fighter 5
- Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar

That's number 14. Or if you want to be nice we can nick out Oblivion and TF2. Then it's number 12. But still not number 5. Weird though, since GameRankings and Metacritic are both under CNET, I'd guess that they use different weighting schemes?

Mind you I'm not a fan or hater of this genre of games; I'm just pointing out something here. Personally I trust Metacritic's weighting more than GameRankings, and that's for all games, not just this one. Your mileage may vary.

The difference between Metacritric and GameRankings is purely a matter of what reviews they have. Metacritic tends to include fewer reviews.

That's nice except that the article stated "according to Gamerankings" not Metacritic. So Metacritic's rating is kind of irrelevant in this context.

Still, out of the hundreds of games released this year for Xbox, Playstation 3, Gamecube, PC, etc. that the game in question is ranked 12th (from Metacritic) or 5th (from Gamerankings) is a pretty significant achievement.

Or, to put it like Metacritic describes it the game has "Universal Acclaim".

In the past 30 days there have been two posts from someone at Stardock. The last Stardock software related post by someone at Stardock was September 20th, and that was about WindowBlinds.

Wow, we're sure pumping out a ton of news advertising Stardock. Shame on us.

In relation to the 1000's of other games released since this that have never had a mention on Neowin's game section, err yes you are.
