Fall Xbox 360 Dashboard update - download old Xbox games?

So, who wants to download old Xbox 1 games on their Xbox 360 for 1200 (or so) MS points? Because come December 4th you will be able to do that and more! (Don't forget the rumored DivX support being added to the console as well)

Microsoft reportedly confirmed the news to the Official Xbox Magazine, and told OXM that the biggest new feature to be added was a service to let you download original Xbox games such as Halo and Fable. Games will reportedly cost 1200 MS points ($15 USD, GBP 10.20, EUR 13.96) and one would assume the service will work alot like the Xbox Live Arcade service does.

Right now the line up of games to be offered are: Halo, Fable, Indigo Prophecy, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and Burnout 3.

Not much else is known about this service, as the story is literally just breaking now. Also revealed in today's news are (finally) plans for the downloadable movie service for Europe to (maybe) launch with the Fall dashboard update. North American users have had this service for quite awhile now in the Marketplace, but Europeans can finally get in on the action! Of course, you can only "rent" a movie and once you "open the wrapper" so to speak, the movie is only good for 24 hours. You can however keep the movie/video on your hard drive for two weeks.

How about some better backwards compatibility?

I doubt very much we will get anymore BC updates - maybe one more, but that's pushing it. Not if MS is going to launch this service anyway.

It's out of MIcrosoft's hands. It's the people who developed the game who makes the backwards compatibility patches. Microsoft just verifies and approves or denies them.

Either way, this addition is an absolute joke. We want real features. High-quality voice codec, the ability to adjust my microphone sensitivity, a headset that doesn't blow ass, reliable download servers that will download a 500MB file in less than an hou, and finally, games that don't suck.

If this is what they mean by Xbox Live is about to get better than ever, then then they retards.

Not quite. Microsoft's responsible for writing the emulator that the Xbox 1 games run on. It's definitely within their power to update the BC any time they see fit. With this new marketing ploy, they'll have to update their emulator or endure a lack of sales due to all of the current glitches.

Also, bear in mind that if you already own these titles, they'll run from disc just as well as they'll run from your HDD. Between the price gouging and the DRM lock-out "feature", you're better off buying the disc versions.

Great news! especially the movie idea... though are the movies HD?
#2.1 vetLOC on 13 Nov 2007 - 14:16
At the very least, HD movies are being added to the European launch of the Marketplace. Yes.
#2.2 GP007 on 13 Nov 2007 - 18:47
They should be in both SD and HD.

So when is Canada going to get the Video Marketplace?

The XBOX 1 game idea sounds pretty good, however.

Personally I am not very interested in this but it might be good for some people .

OMG...literally earlier today I was thinking it would be cool if Halo was downloadable on the Marketplace and here it is...
#7 lylesback2 on 13 Nov 2007 - 15:55
what about the Canadian marketplace... it's a ghost town

Halo FTW!

The problem is that these services are not cheap or good value. If I'm paying to download Halo over my own connection, I don't expect to have to pay more than what I'd pay to pick it up from my local store.
£10 is just not a realistic price and £5 to rent a film, HD or not, is just insane.
#10.1 PureLegend on 13 Nov 2007 - 20:51
I think it makes a large difference if the film is HD.
#10.2 InsaneNutter on 13 Nov 2007 - 23:36
Agreed, over £10 for Halo... not exactly cheap when you don’t get the packaging, instruction manual and have to download it. I got Halo when I got my 360 in 2005 for about £6-7, I was never able to play it on my 360 though as Halo don’t support 60hz.

All the same if the price is right I can see this been a nice service especially for people who have the 120gig hard drive and have no Xbox 1 games... ill be interested to hear more but i don’t think its something ill use.

I like the first sentence of the second paragraph.

It basically says, this is a rumor, but we're wording it carefully so it doesn't look like a rumor.

Nope, this was confirmed later in the day by Microsoft. Its being called "Xbox Originals"

The only problem with this is Microsoft's servers that power Xbox Live are a joke. They're junk, simple as that. They use about 35% of your bandwidth, yet make you lag like you're using all your bandwidth. The the other problem is most people only have the 20GB HDD. It wouldn't take much to fill the drive up.

Furthermore, why would you spend nearly 20 bucks to download a game you already own? This is just another scheme by Microsoft to get more customers for the holidays. Sorry, but Microsoft is going to have to do a lot better than this to convince me to renew my Xbox Live account.

You don't need a Gold account to make purchases on Xbox Live Marketplace; anybody with a Silver account can buy stuff too.
