Entry 5.0 of Star Trek Online's DevLog debuts the first ever in-game screenshot of Star Trek Online. It features a starship orbiting a planet and showcases the "Interaction System" -- a set of commands which act as a conduit for players to transition between space and ground based gameplay. The game appears to be taking a more "stylized" approach similar to major MMO's such as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.
While flying through space in a starship, players will use the Interaction System in exactly the same way ("Keep it Consistent")... but the NPCs the player will interact with will reflect more of the awesome diversity of the Star Trek universe. In space, players can respond to hails from officials on distant planets, or get orders from the commanders of besieged space stations, or do business with the owners of untrustworthy Orion shipyards, simply by right-clicking on those planets, space stations, or shipyards in exactly the same manner as if they were on the ground. In fact, the Interaction System is often the key to the player's ability to transition between space and ground, as ably illustrated by our VERY FIRST RELEASED IN-GAME SCREEN SHOT

only ST game i really ever enjoyed was Elite force I
I am very sad by what I see. I think I played the exact same thing on the nes back in the day.
Also, could they not come up with an original line? Pfft...taking one from Star Wars (think cloud city) and twisting it...bahhh get some good writers - or is there a strike now?
It looks ok ... I want to see more to see if the cartoonish style will pull it off.
Ever since inception they been going on an on about how real an experience it would be in compared to the what we know..
Firstly we were supposed to be able to crew a ship to all of the occupations and then "fly off to distant galaxies".. well we know that was all changed in favour of the ship now becoming a sort of hub and their will be no individual tasking to pilot the ship... budding command, engineering and medical staff NEED NOT APPLY!.. all of the controlling will be done via "quick slot bar" and is VASTLY simplified (dare I say dumbed down), to the point of no compexity (read: interest).
We were also told that all of the game would be photo realistic.. they even produced some early screenshot of the interior of a ship (corridor and ready rooms) that look really like the inside of a galaxy class ship.. and we know that design was thrown out.
NOW we get THIS POS screenshot... although the look of ship is KIND OF acceptable, although that "superimposed" look, completely changes, the look and feel of how we'd releated to the on screen happenings ... BUT FFS what is it with THAT terrible cartoonish alien thing... there is no way I could possibly play this game if that's is how it going to look, if there are stupid looking pop ups like that during "communications"..
As for people saying " well it'll get better, they are EARLY shots"... well.. they WON'T.. the engine is done (hence the shot) THAT is how it's going to look.
I had high hopes for this, I don't subscribe to games but I definately would have for this... but it's been ruined (even more that I would have thought possible).... it looks sh*t... yet another game aimed at WoW's market.. the devs don't seem to understand that the two markets are different.
A completely ruined opportunity.
Yes, you are right!
The engine is finished! All developers release screenshots as soon as an engine is finished, we all know this! Once developers hit the "finish" button, a screenshot is created, and no more modifications are allowed.
And we also know that models are tied to game engines, once the engine is finished, you can't add or modify models in a game, preposterous!
.....common knowledge.
"just go with it."...
NO... it's not the game we were sold..more bullsh*t lies from just another bullsh*t developer.
It's just some generic POS now.. jeez the interface doesn't even portray any flavour..a bar across the bottom of the screen? WTF is that all about.
If I wanted WoW I'd play WoW.. I don't.
I mean COME ON.. this was how it was supposed to look.

yeah, and that's just the outside view, all communications were supposed to be done from the main screen on the bridge.. not some lame a$$ cartoon pop up.

and as for "all communications where supposed to be done from the bridge" thing... That's not a design, it's barely an idea, it doesn't define or descrie anything. there's a reason the developer went bankrupt.
Sure the actual GUI graphics look pretty lame right now, But GUI's tend to change radically during developement, from the early alpha builds like this wich tends to have even worse GUI's generally.
Personally I'm more worried about the crap ship models hey have like that one, or even worse if they allow players to "put together" custom models, kitbashes are 100% allways horribly ugly.
As for not being able to be a bridge offiser or engineer or sit on the bridge or work in the engine room... yeah. they probably wanted more than 10 people to actually buy and play the game so they could make money on it. Making an overly advanced and exceptionally boring game, isn't very good for business.

DEFINATELY not true... the graphics direction was already decided on and this was released as a proof of where they were going, further backed up by the participation of Mike Okuda who joined staff and confirmed this.. the bridge communication sysytem was also a "definate" direction the team were headed in... this all perfectly illustrated by the fact that most of the team walked out in disgust at the news of the changes that were to be made, Mike Okuda also wakled.
REGARDLESS of what the "new" owners think.. it's still a very definate huge change to how we were all sold the idea in the first place.
They could of franchised it out to another group and keep it going.
Right...
Because NOBODY makes or fixes anything in the Star Wars universe, like Han, Chewie, Anakin, Watto, R2D2, the Kaminoans etc...
/sarcasm off;
Honestly, not everyone likes to do combat 24/7 in an MMO. One might think that would make sense.
one of first statements said 'we want bring the game for casual gamer masses' ...
these facts are enough for me to consider this MMO nearly dead ...
The CARTOON look STAYS!!!!
...Go get your own source.
STO is dead... this is some competely different thing just called STO.
Don't worry people, it's a joke you idiots! No company would be stupid enough to release this! My guess is that it's just a good prank to cheer us up... isn't it?
... It would be incredibly awesome if it became a possibility.
