Following speculation surrounding job advertisements on Blizzard's website, a community administrator has confirmed on the World of Warcraft forums that the developer is currently at work on an unannounced, next-gen MMO. The job postings displayed are seeking lead character and environment 3D artists for the unspecified project, which has an icon reading "Top Secret!" displayed alongside the posting where the logo for the appropriate game property would normally be. The community administrator addressed the speculation on the forums succinctly, but said, "No, it is an unannounced Next-Gen MMO. And that doesn't mean an expansion for World of Warcraft either.

I wish blizzard would stop with this damn mmo crap and make a proper Warcraft game, re-start Starcraft: Ghost and get Starcraft 2 done quicker.....
#2.1 sin-ergy on 14 Dec 2007 - 11:16
I agree. I lost faith in Blizzard after Warcraft 3. Unfortunately Blizzard is a business and they're going to do what brings in the most money: MMOs. As much as some of us hate them there's 10 million others who don't feel the same
#2.2 Nose Nuggets on 14 Dec 2007 - 17:26
blizzard, like most companies, dont give a damn what you think. they put resources where the money is. they could never hope to make as much money off starcraft 2 as they already have off wow. what is it now? 7 million subscribers paying $14.00 a month?
#2.3 Viper217 on 15 Dec 2007 - 18:35
actually its about 9.3 million right now, $15 bucks a month if you just get 1 month at a time.

IMO, that means there's 7 million fools out there. Pay $40 for a game then 14 a month to play ??!! What a killing!!
$218 you pay to play the game for 1 year. And I thought $40+ for any game was insanely priced.

we need diablo III !
#3.1 ThaCrip on 16 Dec 2007 - 04:33
i strongly agree! ... Diablo series is BY FAR blizzards best RPG to date... all there newer stuff just aint the same.

cause the last RPG i really liked (pretty much) was Diablo 2

all these "warcraft" type games pretty much suck compared to diablo 2 (atleast single player wise cause i never even liked Diablo2 online much)

No more MMO's! I'd prefer StarCraft II (& III?), and WarCraft 4!
(I am a wow-player, but I'd love to have WC4 instead, the story is so awesome in their RTS)
#5 pupdawg on 14 Dec 2007 - 12:35
World of StarCraft Online! Yea!

GW > WoW

Considering WoW has millions more subscribers than GW, I say you're wrong.

More people know about WoW and it's much more of a time sink. Some people even get turned off to GW without giving it a chance or even playing it after hearing about its "differences" to WoW.

Personally, I stopped playing WoW for Guild Wars.

They both have their strengths, but GW better suited my play style. I could casually jump in and get stuff done, and never feel like I had to justify a monthly cost. WoW would require me to spend a ton of time in game, both to grind my character to get anything done, and also I felt I needed to get my money's worth out of it.

They've added a lot of grind to GW recently, but it's completely optional and of course it's still free.

Everyone is entitled to their Opinion, but GW only kept my interest for about 2 weeks.... Now it cost me $49.99. So it basically boiled down to $25 per/week for me to play to the point of being bored of it. In fact most games I've purchased only hold my interest for no more than a month.

Now WoW on the other hand has kept my interest for some years now. $15 a month is cheep.
#8.4 TRC on 14 Dec 2007 - 18:35
I'm not sure why this comparison keeps coming up, because Guild Wars is not an MMO.
#8.5 Jugalator on 14 Dec 2007 - 20:28
It depends on the definition of "MMO". It's massively multiplayer in that so many people share the game world and at any point can join up with each other to go out in adventuring parties or PvP. But it's not in the sense they are separated in instances. However, that didn't stop D&D Online from usually being called a MMO too. Anyway, while GW blurred the lines a bit, Guild Wars 2 will gain features of a more like a classic MMO like WoW, and still use their classic expansion-based business model. It'll have more "distinguished" PvE and PvP to not restrict PvE as much to keep a level playing field in PvP, while offering PvP full skills unlocks, have persistent worlds, realm warfare, and more... That's among the most interesting games to be gear up its development in 2008, IMHO. I liked GW1 for so many innovative ideas, and its PvP felt miles ahead of WoW.

Love to see my friend dish his money out on an expansion for GW only to beat it in a couple days and be bored again.

If your friend is only buying expansion packs to "beat" them as fast as possible, he's missing the point. GW shines in PvP.
#8.8 Unwonted on 16 Dec 2007 - 16:47
I've had multiple max level characters exploring all the content in both, and I have to say that Guild Wars and WoW are as different from each other as Halo and Gran Turismo.

Right, but you can't measure the amount of gameplay in PVP just as you can't measure online FPS combat. It's endless in a sense. All a matter of how long it takes for you to become bored of it really. My bud's been on GW for a couple years now.

However, I'm kind of upset that I got him playing WoW. Now he stays cooped up in his room a lot more.

WoW just has more morons.

Number of subscribers doesn't mean something is better. That's like saying Windows is a better operating system than Linux because more people use it.

Maybe Diablo III will be an MMO?
(1 reply) #10 Mike Frett on 14 Dec 2007 - 19:57
Wth? I just started playing WoW. Jeepers.
#10.1 Viper217 on 16 Dec 2007 - 18:50
dont worry, they just started development, that means you have a good 2-3 years to play WoW before this new game comes out.
#11 Jugalator on 14 Dec 2007 - 20:23
If the "next gen" part is about a new business model that doesn't stricly require subscriptions, then the universe will surely collapse. Actually, that's why GW2, to enter beta sometime next year, and still offer more persistent worlds than GW1, sounds so damn interesting. I really like GW's skill mechanics, lack of WoW cartoon graphics, and so much more.

Blizzard said after W3 and before WoW they are goign to start working on a new franchise.

this new mmo isnt going to be diablo/wow2
#12.1 Osiris on 15 Dec 2007 - 05:30
Why would Blizzard - and especially now since they have merged with activison - opt for risk over guaranteed dollars? A new franchise takes longer to build in terms of building story, lore and then the actual game, where as using an existing franchise not only saves on half that time, but lets be honest a WoW, Starcraft or Diablo MMO would make them guaranteed, whats the word i'm looking for? oh yeah $$$$$$$$$$$$$! ca ching!

New franchise usually means whole new game series, not a squeal to anything in the past.

I wonder how blizzard is doing now that WoW's main devs went to work for guildwars.

does anyone know what new mmo it will be or have any ideas guessing they relaizing it time to put wow to sleep because its losing its player base.
#15.1 Kasandoro on 17 Dec 2007 - 17:18
I hate to point this out (ok, I really don't), but wow is NOT losing it's player base.

9.3 million subscribers would argue.

That doesn't mean there are 9.3 million current subscribers. That means thre has been a total of 9.3 million accounts opened. Trust me, WoW does not have a total of 9.3 million current subscribers. Each server only holds about 1000 people. Add about 500 for queue, and that's still not even close to 9.3 million

And with each given month, more and more people are leaving WoW for bigger and better things.

“World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.”

If someone knew what the new MMO was, it'd be pasted all over the tubes that is t'internet.

Personally, i'm hoping for an MMOFPS of Starcraft. Never been another MMOFPS to compete with Planetside, shame that belonged to Sony, dragged through the dirt to shake off subs like all their other games
