In December, Microsoft released a $2,999 Xbox 360 HD DVD emulator that allowed developers to test HD DVD projects on the 360 from a USB drive or networked PC. It was an easy way to check how a project would run on the console without printing endless discs (aka coasters, aka microwave fun).

Now, because timing is everything, Microsoft has released their emulator to the public free of charge (go forth and to with it what you will). Developers who already paid for the program will be refunded.

Yeah, so greed-driven that they refund those who have already paid for it even though they have absolutely no obligation to do so. Those bastards!

Yeah. Just think: if it were Apple, they'd be refunding $200 back to them.

(unnecessary but funny and true)

How so, I don't remember Apple selling a device for $2,999 and only refunding $200 to everybody who bought it

Well...not for that amount or whatever. They are referring to the iPhone refund I think. But it isn't like the iPhone is as useless as this thing is (especially considering HD-DVD addon should be disappearing off shelves soon).

so, now people can rip and play a hd-dvd on xbox 360 through the computer or external harddrive?
Quote this comment #3.1 Posted by TRC on 07 Mar 2008 - 02:46
You can already do that anyway, the 360 can play h.264, divx, xvid, etc. This just let's you play back the HD-i features too I guess.

What about the people who already purchased the emulator?

They will be issued gift certificates redeemable at the Microsoft Store. I'm kidding, of course! That would be completely lame - who would do that?
