When glancing through the multiplayer beta for Electronic Arts' upcoming Xbox 360 shooter Battlefield: Bad Company last night I noticed something odd in the title's "Unlocks" section: Ten of the unlockable weapons are tagged with notes saying "Buy this weapon on Xbox Live Marketplace."

According to the statistics graph, the for-cash weaponry doesn't seem to be more any powerful than the other high-end guns. But the beta won't be playable until later this month, so we can't be sure.

Assuming EA's own chart isn't lying to me, it's good to know the game won't let players literally buy an advantage. But does EA really need to pull down even more cash for a weapon that is most likely already going to be contained on the disc?

It's evident that the model for the gun exists in the beta already, as the screen pictured gives you the option to zoom in and around the weapon. So what you would be paying for would be the few bytes necessary to tell the game that you've handed over enough cash to earn the right to play with EA's shiniest toys.

I sorta admire the capitalist intent behind this, but the teenage anarchist in me wants to get a lip ring and throw a brick through my Xbox 360.

Wow, splitting the community even before the game is released. wtg EA.

Why can't it be that if you buy the game, all the content that comes out for it is free? =/

Not a surprise really. EA are also doing this to Battlefield Heroes. Just think how many people are going to buy the weapons..... almost no one.

Another reason to never play a Battlefield game again.

Bulls*** from EA. What else is new?

lol. Games like Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport costs money, and a lot more, because they need to test every single car that they put in the game, and also pay for the car licenses(s).

You haven't got the point of this article, haven't you? We know what you said, but EA is trying to charge people to unlock items that are already on the disc! All the downloads contain are 108.00KB keys to unlock the content, and EA charge ridiculous prices for it.

They sell two versions of Need for Speed ProStreet, one of them is a collectors version that has 5 extra cars and 4 extra race days. You can download this off the Marketplace for 800 Microsoft Points, and it's a bloody unlock key!

Oops, too much things to do and then i can't take care of all at the same time (duh).

Now i understand, they want people to pay for unlocks , for example, in BF2 the F2000 is an unlock, if we want it in future BF versions we need to pay real money. That sucks a lot.

Didn't this already happen to Oblivion?

I'm not saying I'm cool with EA charging more money to unlock something already on the disc. I'm just saying they're not the first company to implement a "how much can we get them to pay for this game in the end" idea like this.

To me, if it's on the disc, you already paid for it. If you need to download it (like songs and maps) then they can charge you, it's bonus stuff.

The problem is if companies start stripping down what comes on the disc and you have to download and pay for almost all bonus content. But I think if that happens, no one will buy the game to begin with.

Oblivion had some areas that Bethesda produced AFTER the release of the game and sold. EA is taking things that are already in the game and making people pay for them.

The DLCs for Oblivion were made after the game was released and they were based on players' request.

We wanted vampire home, Beth gave us Vile Lair.
We wanted warrior home, Beth gave us B... Castle.
We wanted thief home, Beth gave us Thieves Den.
And so on...

Also, all of the DLCs added new functionality...

This is not limited to games. Latest iPod Touch firmware has those apps you have to pay 20$ already in there. Just need to buy the "unlock code" to get access to them.

Also, this MIGHT be another reason alot of companies are jumping on the console bandwagon. They can get away with **** like this there. Where as on PC the "bonus items" will be hack unlocked before you can say... well... anything.

It's much better when the unlock code for some bonus is included with a product, just makes it a bit more exciting to buy.

making you pay for a code for something thats already included is wrong.

Erm your iPod Touch firmware analogy is flawed. Those items were developed after the product shipped. The only difference is that they are bundling the free updates with updates you have to pay for. Would you prefer they split the "paid for" parts off into a separate download just to appease you?

this is what ****ed me off so much about crackdown...and what EA is doing is worse.

you download the free for all pack, and it says it gives you awesome new vehicles and weapons, i spend 15 minutes downloading the thing, then when i go to get these new things, there all locked, and say i need to spend 800 points to use them....

i already bought the game, why am i paying another $10 for it......

Screw EA. They are evil money grabbing c***s. They are just going to make people turn to piracy.

LOL why is everyone complaining? You pay for gaming online lol so why not pay for unlocks. PC on the other hand it would never fly..

but the teenage anarchist in me wants to get a lip ring and throw a brick through my Xbox 360

Well.. I'd like to throw few bricks through EAs HQ windows.. in hope of smashing some execs already empty head

weather the content is on the disk or downloaded is COMPLETELY irrelevant. If EA wants to charge for alternate model weapons or player skins, thats their prerogative. i think their silly to think its going to be worth their time to implement a system to purchase said additions, but alas. they are considering it extra content and they want to be paid for it. fine.

now, if these pay-for weapons provided an advantage to the player, then yes, i could see issue with that. allowing people who pay a premium to have an advantage over those who dont is questionable. but from the article, they dont. so if someone wants to drop $5 on a camo skin for theu M4 then why not let them? they get the feeling they have an out of the norm weapon and EA gets a little extra cash. whats the big deal?
