If you have an Xbox 360 HD DVD player, you’ll be prompted for an auto update the next time you watch an HD DVD movie (and your are signed into Xbox Live.)

This update includes:
  • Compatibility improvements with certain titles
  • Additional support for network features
If you don’t have access to Xbox Live, this update will be available for download from Xbox.com later this week.

I suppose it can't hurt to give people better compatibility so that their HD DVD drive works with all the dirt cheap HD DVD movies that have started to become available!

What a waste of time...

Yeah, imagine them supporting their paying customers. How incredibly silly!

/sarcasm

Microsoft deserves major kudos in my book. They could have just dumped it and moved on but they didn't. Good for them.

If Microsoft truly was interested in what's good for the consumer they wouldn't have encouraged Toshiba to go it alone with HD DVD. Instead, they were so hell bent on giving Sony a black eye and discouraging HD media in general in favor of downloads.

Toshiba built the drive BTW, I bet it's their firmware anyway. So don't pretend MS' interest here is consumer oriented.

Sony shill?

LOL.

As long as I'm "great"...

In any case, proof has been presented time and again. Only the foolish choose to ignore it.

BTW: still going to claim HD DVD will win or whatever? Or are you going to say I was wrong about that too.

Maybe after the firmware update it will, and they're keeping it a secret for now. This would be a very good move for Toshiba, Microsoft, and XBOX360 users

I bought mine for $50 - $30 rebate, so $20 for HD DVD Player (which also does upconverting of regular dvds) and 6 movies is a good deal IMO

Yeah, me too. I bought 3 Xbox 360 HD-DVD Players at FYE for $20. Each box includes a free King Kong HD-DVD Movie. I am also eligible for 5-Free HD-DVD Rebates. In total, I would have 18 HD-DVDs and 3 HD-DVD Players for $60.

(I have 3 addresses for rebates.)

Nice

WIsh it would update to be region free on normal DVD's as well
#6.1 PeterTHX on 09 Apr 2008 - 07:26
DMCA rules make this unlikely.

#6.2 TRC on 10 Apr 2008 - 23:27
Why, I can buy region free players at Wal-Mart.

I've never understood this... do these fw updates ONLY apply to the Xbox 360? What about us that have the drive connected to our computers? Can we update the drive's firmware somehow?
#7.1 TRC on 09 Apr 2008 - 17:11
I don't see anywhere in the article that says this is a firmware update for the drive. Sounds like it's just an update for the 360 itself that improves compatibility with the drive.
