This week, Electronic Arts finally announced a European release date for the rhythm game Rock Band--May 23. The title will be a timed Xbox 360 exclusive in the region, with other formats being released sometime in the summer. The game won't come cheap, despite the delay--a full set of instrument peripherals and a copy of the game will cost £180 ($355) or €240 ($380). In the States, the game plus the instruments has a recommended retail price of $169.99 (£86).

European gamers were less than pleased, with many pointing out that they could buy an Xbox 360 console for less, given the recent price cuts in the region. Now, in response to posts on the official Rock Band site's forums, Greg LoPiccolo, vice president of product development at Harmonix, has offered an explanation.

LoPiccolo says, "We're not making a killing on Rock Band in Europe. We are incredibly sensitive to pricing issues. We are painfully aware that the higher the price we charge, the less copies we'll sell. The fact of the matter is, the costs of releasing in Europe are far higher than in the US."...

I thought this game was out everywhere, sucks to be them. Got this game for my PS3, returned it to amazon a few days later. Think I might buy just the drums and game some time.

I thought about that, but then I priced the game at $60 and the drums at $80. Compare to the full set (guitar, microphone, game, drums, and USB Hub) for $157 on sale. Better deal for everything and if you didn't want the other things, sell them.

Yes, they are. I am sure they have offices in some countries in Europe, where they can manufacture the games. But still, they make faulty excuses.

Another interesting point IMO is the weekly free downloads that the yanks get for Rock Band, will these be transferred over to the UK/EU release or will once again we get shafted and be charged for them? Or even not get them at all?

ya the weekly new songs are not free, on PS3 they cost $1.99 apiece and I'm sure the 360 is about the same.

for 3 metallica songs on the PS3 its $5.49 I believe.
#6.1 nvme on 13 Apr 2008 - 05:43
correct. some of the songs released from week to week come in song packs. the song packs are usually a little cheaper than if you were to buy the songs individually. most songs cost around $1.99 for both xbox and ps3 with the exception of a few songs that were only $0.99 for a limited time and the song "still alive" which was free.

the european version is also going to have a few extra tracks on the disk that the us version doesn't have. however, they're said to all be released to the US as dlc within a couple/few weeks of the european launch for a charge just like all of the other dlc.

What a load of crap. VAT and duty adding £95 quid onto something? VAT is 17.5% - charging £100 for the item means that it would come to £117.50 . Add ten quid duty , round it up about £130?

Just doing that to get more money. Complete greed on their behalf. "Oh, it costs more to do business in the UK and Europe." Eff off, and don't do it here then. I can afford it. I won't be buying it.

to continue the discussion on this, one of the people at harmonix commented on the official rock band forums that the size of the boxes added a large cost due to them being so large. not sure how much weight that carries but i thought i'd throw it out there.

Not worth it.

£180, jesus.

What a pile of mince, its roughly $2 to £1 at mo. So your telling me, that we have to pay £180 or the equiv of $360 to cover localization costs compared to $170 stateside. Thats $190 difference just to cover admin and localization

Effectively a 100% markup on the US price meaning you could buy 2 American copys for every 1 EU copy.
