- Maybe that's why Microsoft slashed prices for the HD-DVD equipped X360?
-
#1.1 Posted by +Dakkaroth on 04 May 2008 - 08:48
- Well, once HD-DVD lost the format war, continuing to manufacture them seems kind of pointless.
-
#1.2 Posted by +TCLN Ryster on 04 May 2008 - 10:08
- There is no "HD-DVD equipped X360". The HD-DVD drive is (or was) a separate add on.

- Had to happen really. Will go nice next to my Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon.

That must be why I have more games on Wii than my 360 (which I've had a year longer). -

How many of them are actually any good though? I've had my Wii and 360 almost the same amount of time (about three weeks between purchases) and not only have more 360 games, but I actually use my 360 too.

- ...the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive...
Does this mean all new consoles after this date will come with a Blu-Ray drive rather than a DVD drive?
This would make sense to halt the climb of the PS3, which in my opinion is only increasing in sales because it's the best value Blu-Ray player on the market.
I wonder what would have happened if they had integrated a HD-DVD drive into all new Xbox 360's from launch... the format war may just have turned out differently due to HD-DVDs other favourable properties. -
#4.1 Posted by HawkMan on 04 May 2008 - 12:11
- the problem is of course that before BD won, a large percentage of PS3 owners NEVER played games on it.
that number ertainly did not go DOWN after BD won, so as a "games" console, I think the 360 is still outselling the PS3 hugely. -
#4.3 Posted by Shadrack on 05 May 2008 - 14:11
- I wonder what would have happened if they had integrated a HD-DVD drive into all new Xbox 360's from launch... the format war may just have turned out differently due to HD-DVDs other favourable properties.
Could have. The undecided movie studios were looking at number of players out there when they choose an exclusive format.
As the article puts it:It is estimated that 85% of Blu-ray players in use are PS3s.
So the majority of the numbers were PS3s.
That being said, it sure did seem like in my part of the world Blu-ray was being advertised a heck of a lot more than HD-DVD. Every movie preview ended with "Available in DVD and Blu-ray." I never once heard "Available in DVD and HD-DVD." I bet that made some kind of difference too.
Even so. Toshiba had $99 HD-DVD players out last year. Consumers only interested in watching HD movies were presented with something that was a much better value than the PS3.

- What I want to know is if/when they do this, will they start producing games on BD? As working in the industry myself it is pretty hard to fit all the content you want onto a DVD without taking some shortcuts etc. We were always told that games would not be for release on the HD-DVD drive as it was external, but seeing as this is now internal, well that puts a different spin on things.
On a related note to that, if that did happen what would happen to all the people who have launch machines or machines prior to the Blu-ray update? -
#5.1 Posted by +TCLN Ryster on 04 May 2008 - 22:43
- will they start producing games on BD
Don't be silly, that will never happen! Did you even think it through before asking that question?
To produce games on BD will instantly eliminate their 18m+ console base they have established as not a single one of the Xbox 360's already sold will be able to play those new BD games. No games publisher in their right mind would produce a game with an audience of ZERO.
Besides, changing the fundemental specification of a product mid-way through its lifecycle is unheard of and counter-productive (well as long as you discount Sony, who have a habit of changing the specification of Blu-Ray whenever they feel like it). -

- well as long as you discount Sony, who have a habit of changing the specification of Blu-Ray whenever they feel like it
What is with you and FUD anyway? You seem to thrive on it.
Sony doesn't control BD specs. the BDA does. Panasonic has more patents in the format than Sony does. Just as Toshiba did with DVD, but Sony was a HUGE promoter of DVD in the beginning as well.
Profiles are controlled by the BDA and everyone (educated at least) knew that 1.1 (PiP) and 2.0 (BD-Live internet) were coming down the line. Just as DTS, progressive scan, PC Friendly, and numerous other features were added to DVD as the format evolved.
Sony wanted to add Microsoft's HDi but was overruled by the BDA. Just try to spin that one to make Sony look bad.
"Sony is Blu-ray" is old & busted. Get over it and stop with the blatant misinformation.

Blu ray addon would be good.. imo.. if they wanted HD DVD to win .. they should of equipped the 360 with a built in HD DVD drive and burn all their games to those HD DVD discs to support them .. stupid enough they didnt.. shame on microsoft. even though i support them..

- blu-ray won because its double the space of HD-dvd. not because the PS3 uses blu-ray. it would be stupid to go with a format that holds half the space.
-
#13.1 Posted by +TCLN Ryster on 04 May 2008 - 22:53
- Rubbish.
Space had nothing to do with it. A movie on an HD-DVD disc looks identical to the same movie on a Blu-Ray disc. Both had adequate space for HD movies. Also the belief that Blu-Ray had bigger discs than HD-DVD is a common misconception.
While Blu-Ray could hold more data per layer than HD-DVD, HD-DVD was able to squeeze more layers onto a disc.
The sole reason Blu-Ray won is because of the PS3 and the huge advantage it gave the format in terms of number of players in the mainstream. While the PS3 is lagging behind the Xbox 360 in terms of a games console, it gave the Blu-Ray format a boost of 9m+ players, something HD-DVD couldn't match even with it's more consumer friendly pricing.
Besides, it's all quite irrelevant now, isn't it? -

No it isn't.
While Blu-Ray could hold more data per layer than HD-DVD, HD-DVD was able to squeeze more layers onto a disc.
Your so-called triple layer disc never made it past finalized spec, much less production. Never mind it would have rendered all players obsolete, nor could it make up the bandwidth difference 48Mbps>30Mbps.

Consumer friendly? Companies couldn't make any money. You wonder why no one else wanted to buy into Toshiba's monopoly? Plus you ignore the fact that by holiday 2007 standalone sales had pulled about even. PS3 was icing on the cake. Toshiba couldn't even break a million players sold. There weren't even a million users since a LOT of HD DVD owners had multiple devices.
Besides, it's all quite irrelevant now, isn't it?
Indeed, so why continue to spread misinformation? I tried explaining to you while the format war was raging that HD DVD was doomed and you refused to listen then. -
#13.3 Posted by +Dale on 05 May 2008 - 22:14
- i would agree that the playstation 3 is what fueled blu ray, The reason I wont buy a blu ray player is because the current players are only profile 1.1 and the same price of a PS3 that has profile 2.0.
who in the right mind would want to buy a $400 blu ray player? i'm waiting till 2.0 becomes $200 (at least!

No, it never saw the light of day, because the format was killed by Toshiba. The rest is subjective, unless you listen to bitrates instead of movies.(PeterTHX said @ #13.2)Consumer friendly? I'm pretty sure the PS3 was losing boatloads on each one sold, and as the news said they accounted for 85%of all BD players sold. Toshiba wasn't the only one losing money to push its format.(PeterTHX said @ #13.2)Indeed, so why continue to spread misinformation? - This is one of those cases where what the consumer wanted never got into focus here. BD won because it was heavy with the DRM crap. Yes BD has a better capacity amount but it has a much crappier compression rate too however the movie industry was blinded by the fact that they could control who watched their movies and on what.
-
#14.1 Posted by Smigit on 04 May 2008 - 23:08
- hate to say it but in my eyes it looked like the consumer voted with their wallet also. From the stats I remember movie sales od BD were typically higher than HD-DVD for most of the time the two were competing. HD-DVD won standalone player sales but that also didn't mean a huge deal when the PS3 was outselling those too. I'd have prefered HD-DVD for the DRM and regionless nature of the disk also.

- If they do convert the 360 to blu-ray altogether, making the previous version obsolete, I know that they will not do well. I know that I wouldn't support that decision. Plus, a lot of the people who make the games will not support that either, because they know that the community would not support it.
-
#15.1 Posted by Smigit on 04 May 2008 - 23:11
- eh??? Why wouldnt people support it including developers?
The games WONT be BluRay, it just means they will have a version of the console that can play BluRay movies (not games). In all likleyhood they will keep at least the premium or Arcade console versions as they are with a DVD to offer a cheaper alternative and just get rid of the Elite seeing as it lacks any real advantage over the Premium now that HDMI is standard besides the larger HD.

- There will be no games on blue-ray for the 360.
How in the world are all the people without the blue-ray drive going to play them. It's just an upgrade for playing movies like the HDDVD.
Force to upgrade? I don't think so. -
#16.1 Posted by Magallanes on 04 May 2008 - 22:47
- In fact it's a trouble to not to force to buy a blu-ray driver, many people will buy a complete blu-ray player rather to spend money on a (not so cheap) addons.

- I was planning on buying a PS3 for its BluRay movie capabilities (my x360 is great for games and as a media center), but now I have to wait and see. If x360 BR is just as good as the PS3 in BR movies and in the same price, then the only reason for me to get the PS3, will be the Gran Turismo series.

- I'm sorry but I have to get this off my chest. It really irks me that Microsoft constantly lies to us. They repeatedly said that Blu-Ray was NOT an option and they were not pursuing it. Obviously they have been.
I LIKE Microsoft because they gave me my XBOX and Vista (which works fine for me, I dunno why everyone is going nuts). However, there have been decisions made this last year that really make me question the sanity of Balmer.
1). Killing Hotmail access in Outlook Express. - Not that I use it anymore.. but seriously? There are people that do... and there really isn't any significant reason why they couldn't continue that.
2). Killing XP. Yes yes, I like Vista, but I also love my XP box too. There is NO POINT other than financial gain to have everyone on the planet switch to Vista. If people love XP, then SELL XP. You're making money, and eventually when you get some of the things worked out that people don't like about Vista.. namely hardware support.. they will WANT to come over to Vista. But because you forced it Microsoft... now Vista has a bad name, and you have to overcome that.
3). Lying. Last January regarding the Zune, saying it has 25 percent of the high-end MP3 player market.
I could go on and on, but there is no point. Microsoft is a D-Bag. I'm tired of them dicking us around and getting away with it. They simply do not listen to the public, and always assume that they know what's best for us.

- (Delebre said @ #1)I'm sorry but I have to get this off my chest. It really irks me that Microsoft constantly lies to us. They repeatedly said that Blu-Ray was NOT an option and they were not pursuing it. Obviously they have been.
The original statement I recall reading was that, if Bluray were to succeed as the winning format, they'd consider implementing it. Of course, later after that, they would deny any rumor of jumping ship to Bluray to keep from scaring anyone considering the HD-DVD drives made available for the 360. In the end though, it seems they're doing as they originally stated.
Besides, what company doesn't flat out deny rumors, even if there is a hint of truth to it? Hell, even Blizzard would deny working on a Diablo 3 entirely despite having just obtained diablo3.com from a fansite recently. The government does the same crap as well. Not that it's right, but why only target Microsoft as if they're the "only one"?1). Killing Hotmail access in Outlook Express. - Not that I use it anymore.. but seriously? There are people that do... and there really isn't any significant reason why they couldn't continue that.
Windows Live Mail uses a new technology called DeltaSync to replicate e-mail, contacts and other data between Hotmail and a user's PC. Microsoft says DeltaSync is faster because it only downloads new or modified messages and headers from the Hotmail server, whereas DAV downloaded everything. But, Hammer wrote, "the new protocol unfortunately is not supported by Outlook Express, and support would require too many changes to the Outlook Express software."
source
Windows Live Mail is much better anyhow, in my opinion. Can't live in the past forever. Besides, if you don't use it anymore, what's the problem?
2). Killing XP. Yes yes, I like Vista, but I also love my XP box too. There is NO POINT other than financial gain to have everyone on the planet switch to Vista. If people love XP, then SELL XP. Who's killing XP? The end of retail sales of Windows XP does not mean they will discontinue support. Neowin even put up an article to clarify that. Sure, XP will end eventually, but that won't happen until 2014. By then though, I think the hardware manufacturers may end up killing XP by then, as XP may no longer support the hardware to come in the next several years.3).
Most statistics are fudged. Hell, I recall Apple claiming their Windows version of Safari was "the fastest browser on the internet" when it was still in beta stages and nowhere near the truth it had. Sure, it's steamed up since then, but it doesn't change the fact that they had that posted before it was even close to the truth.
And once again, I'm not saying it's right by any means, but to criticize Microsoft as if they're they only company using cheap tactics is pretty ridiculous. Every company is after your money and don't let them fool you for a second to think otherwise.
As for your rant, I do believe you could've brought up a much better list of things to discuss. The first two weren't even noteworthy though, and the lying and denying is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. -

1) IE7 didn't even ship with a new version of OE - thats how much MS thought of it. OE is old and dated, and even Windows Mail on Vista has been superseded by Windows Live Mail, which is by far a much better email client and integrates with Hotmail very nicely, plus its free.
2) XP is old, get over it. Yes MS is making money on XP (I doubt as much as Vista), but companies do not continue to sell products, even if they are making money as they become old and obselete. Evolution is crucial and thats was Vista is (though people tend to disagree). How has MS FORCED people to move to Vista?? If you have XP (which is everyone who wants to keep it), then your fine - MS will still support it and provide updates, support etc. They did the same with every other OS they have released - there comes a time when you have to let it go and focus on the future, which is Vista and Windows 7. What is the point in buying a brand new PC and using an out-dated OS!!
3) No comment as i've never seen one living in the UK.

- same here

but then again prices will most likely go up quite a bit for the console so that will be a bad thing
PLUS, i dont think moding a blu-ray drive to play backups will be a good thing either which is a major drawback if you ask me... cause even if you could mod them to play backups if something went wrong replacing that will probably be a arm and a leg etc etc.
so even though it could be a plus i would rather have them just keep standard dvd-rom in the system and put more of a priority on making a xbox360 'reliable'!

and USB stick would be ideal for games distribution or data storage ... but oops i forgot these consoles are 'next gen'
right?
