Still haven't ever played Myst, despite the fact that it's been released across something like 10 different pieces of hardware? Then maybe you'll finally get around to it when it gets ported yet again, this time to the iPhone (via Game|Life).

The news comes by way of a very small announcement on the Myst Online forums. This latest port is being handled by Cyan, the original developers of Myst (although the post notes it's an "outside-funded project"), with a development team that is apparently comprised of only three people.

There are no other details at the moment, including any mention of a release date, but we do at least know one more thing -- according to Joystiq, which received a note from one of the developers of the game, the iPhone version of Myst will most likely not be called iMyst; "I'm pretty darn sure we're only calling it iMyst internally as a goofy moniker," the anonymous developer said. Thank the heavens.

'Cuz it's fun? Hopefully you'll be able to move by tilting and link by touching the linking books... That would be sweet!

Loved Myst back in the day.

My favs were the Stoneship Age and Mechanical Age. The brothers' rooms looked so well-designed.

Riven and the rest, they were alright. But none had the charm of the original Myst.

"We have this lush, vivid, living world that we're very proud of and is an original example of how visuals can impact the enjoyment of a game's environment...quick! Let's put this baby on the smallest screen we can find!"

It doesn't matter who's coding the port. Myst for Windows Mobile was awful, and that was blamed entirely and universally on the small screen experience. No novel touch-screen input method is going to impact the game significantly enough to dodge the same fate.

/but i whole-heartedly welcome any effort to keep adventure/puzzle games alive, even if the sales will be entirely thanks to Apple's Appleyness

Damn...Beat me too it!

I have this for the DS, played for a few minutes and never touched it again. The problem was the small screen. The touch screen controls didnt help to overcome this flaw.

Just out of interest, will it also work on the iPod Touch? or this purely for the iPhone? (considering the Touch isn't really all that different, minus the phone part and a few extra bits here and there)

I believe it is iPod Touch compatible as well. Cyan hasn't released a whole lot of information about it yet other than it was coming.

Sorry, but I hated Myst. I couldn't figure out what the hell I was supposed to do, and not for lack of trying. Seriously hated the game.

I'm not sure if that's something you want to go around telling everyone.

cyan is really squeezing myst for all it's worth. they will probably port it to my washing machine next.

i guess that tend to happen to developers when they ran out of fresh ideas for new games ...

Myst on iPhone. Why? I bet they will make more sales and interest if they re-release Riven as 'realRiven'. On the flipside of the coin who remember's Lucas arts' point and click adventure games. Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max or Grim Fandango on the iPhone anyone?
#9.1 Albert on 03 Sep 2008 - 09:26
ah yes. the scumm adventure games.

mayhaps someone doth written a virtual machine for these games (hint). mayhaps it is called scummvm (hint hint).
