Nintendo Wii sales up, despite financial crisis

It looks like the credit crunch isn't hitting everyone as hard as the media makes out, as Nintendo have just announced that sales figures for the Wii, are up by 38% compared to last year (10.1 million units sold in the first half of this year). The Wii is currently the mid-priced current-gen console, priced between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

To top off Nintendo's success this year, they have also announced that their current-generation handheld console, the Nintendo DS, has recently outsold the original gameboy console - one of the best selling handheld consoles ever to be released. (81.3M Gameboy units sold vs 84.3M (and counting) DS units).

Demand for the Nintendo Wii is expected to be strong this holiday season, and while Nintendo are trying their best, they are making no promises as to whether or not one will be sitting under your Christmas tree this year.

A bit of a sensational article on Gizmodo there... Drawing on photos and claiming Nintendo is lying is a bit childish.

I still don't understand how the Wii is still as popular as it is. Theres only so much arm flailing you can do before the novelty wears off. I realise it's fun for parties and for groups of friends, but as a games console for a single person it just doesn't measure up. IMHO.

the thing is, it's not just about the gaming crowd anymore. If Wii was purely targeting the gaming crowd, yes, it would probably fail quicker then The Hoff's greatest hits album, but it's not. It's also targeting that very big crowd that don't really care that it doesn't have all of the latest games or whatever. The kinda crowd that are just happy with a few "games" in a year.

I sure hope that few hundred dollars is worth the feeling.

Yes and some of us already have all these old games on 8-bit cartridges. Why should we have to buy them again? Virtual Console is nice for those who don't have them, but since I do have them I'll stick with playing them on my Dreamcast.

If you're flailing around that much, you're doing it wrong.

Uh... Wii's more expensive then the 360? Last i heard the cheapest 360 was still 259.99...

I love all three of my systems. They've all got more then enough games to keep be busy for over another year. And the Virtual Console is worth the price of admission alone...

Edit: Whoops, apparently the arcade 360 is $200 now. my mistake.

yeah, but you have to buy a live subscription to make it useful...

actually, i do think they're lying about making a good faith effort to supply the US with an adequate number of units. i don't think it's childish to observe that Wii units have been in very tight supply and very very difficult to find about since it's US release. maybe it's the exchange rate, or something else, but for months eBay has been the most reliable way to get ahold of one that i know of.

I agree, there is no question they are keeping the demand artificially inflated. It's been quite a while now since it came out, to say that they can't keep up with the demand by now is nonsense.

Wow, what is Nintendo's problem? Selling out the holiday season of Wii's release is one thing but come on, you've had plenty of time to catch up on your production. No excuses this year for shortages, NONE.
