Activision has quite literally cleaned up at the 26th Golden Joystick awards today, scooping, among others, the award for best publisher. The Call of Duty series took most of the "for games" awards - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare picked up 4 awards, including "Multiplayer game of the year", while its younger, unreleased brother, Call of Duty 5: World at War nabbed the "One to watch" award.

Other companies did get a look in too - Rockstar picked up the "Developer of the year" award, and it's controversial Grand Theft Auto IV picked up "Xbox game of the year". Unsurprisingly, the "PlayStation game of the year" gong went to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Although, it's nice to see non-standard gaming platforms being included as well - with the iPhone version of Bejeweled 2 picking up the "Mobile Game of the year" prize.

Shame Rock band didn't pick up any awards, but Rockstar picked up developer of the year? They only did three games this year so far: Bully, GTA IV and Midnight Club LA.

Ahh well, at least Play.com picked up retailer of the year! They deserved it!

Yeah, it's a bit of a shame.

Hopefully Rock Band 2 will live up to its expectations and beat GH:World Tour next year.

Three games is a fair amount for a developer. Many release a single game every few years. I realise they have multiple teams but for this industry three games in 12 months is a pretty good turnover.

Could've been the quality of Rockstar's games, rather than the quantity.

Couldnt have been. Bully was just a remake. gta4 blew goats and Midnight club was just alright.

Call Of Duty 4 is a good game but it's not that good.
#3.1 Raa on 31 Oct 2008 - 23:53

To "quite literally cleaned up" would mean that they literally actually did clean up in the sense of doing janitorial duties or washing dishes, etc. not "clean up" in a metaphoric sense meaning that they won everything - this is not literal.

I'm sorry but it just really annoys me when it is said to be doing something 'literal' but really it is metaphoric and goes against the meaning of literal.

I thought this too, and it made me smile

Indeed, but I fear it's too much to ask for writers that actually comprehend the English language. It's sad because "literally" is an incredibly easy word to understand.

Damn, I was going to point that one out. Stupid writers.

I guess you guys have never heard of the term "a figure of speech". Here in England it's quite common.
#5.6 theyarecomingforyou on 02 Nov 2008 - 19:23
"Activision has cleaned up at the 26th Golden Joystick awards today", is a figure of speech. Inserting "quite literally" is categorically wrong and shows a lack of understanding of the English language.

I am in England you fool. It's called 'getting it right'.

Some very undeserving awards there imo. Don't agree with many of them at all.
#7 +Smigit on 01 Nov 2008 - 17:09
Yeah I don't agree with most of the results either to be honest. I also find it pretty dubious when you have awards like "Activision Blizzard Retailer of the Year" and a whole bunch of other sponsered or whatever awards from sites and the like who have advertising deals with the companies involved. Not saying it is rigged, but it still is pretty dubious IMHO.

COD 4 Deserved the award yes but its really bugging that the award didnt actually go to Infinity Ward themselves.
